I dated a guy whose family lived like this. Once he moved in with me, he cleaned. I never asked him to, but it was something he had pride in. You’ve given this 17 year old a fresh start, I wish him the best going forward, because this is rough.

im in this situation, is really hard bc I myself never undesrtood that the way i lived was wrong and unhealthy until i was already older and watched cleaning videos on youtube bc they were recommended for being viral and then i started learning and realizing how bad it is here.... plus i didnt know many things about cleaning and how to do it. Where i live, rare times i tried to do some cleaning here but overall i just don't have energy or motivation because its like YEARS of filth accumulated and not just filth, house building problems too... Living with super messy people doesn't help bc they don't cooperate to keep the place clean and even make things worse by dirtying it all... As a bonus i have depression and anxiety too. Its too much for me to fix when i cant even have right products to clean, i just gave up and do the bare minimum until i get my own place and start fresh with my own money :(

True and reaching out for help was beyond just doing his best, he was reaching out for help. His mother had him buried in junk so he couldn't easily clean it himself. Rob if you are reading; you can keep your shower clean without having to scrub anything. Buy a squeegee and use a towel to dry the shower after each use or at least once a day. You can use your own towel or a bar towel or a gym towel if you prefer. This trick will keep your shower spotless clean. You can do the same thing with the sink. Just dry it after using it or at least once a day. There is something wonderful about getting into a dry shower.

Home cooked meals can be hard to do but on the general idea, yes, children deserve a safe and clean environment so they can thrive. It doesn't have to be perfect but there's a minimum you have to do for your kids. You chose to have them and having a kid means you have to do things for them.

That's true. My mom used keep the house filthy, but I used to take the initiative to clean everyday, and even deep clean at the age of just 14. Saying that, it quickly gets strenous when you're the only one cleaning up after yourself and others, so I gave up some years after. Thank god it's different now. She treats her son like most people treat their pets. Even in relatively clean houses, I've seen their pets' water dishes looking disgusting. My house gets messy, but I won't give my cats something to eat or drink out of that I wouldn't also use. Sadly, most people think that's more gross. Just because your pets tolerate un unclean bowl, it doesn't mean they like it or should have to. They deserve empathy.

Does she "deserve" help? I struggle with the concept that adults "deserve" anything beyond freedom and due process. She didn't even reach out for the help she got. She is responsible for her son, meeting his needs, and teaching him how to be a self sufficient adult. Actually at 17, he should be keeping his own shower clean. Instead of helping his learn how to tackle that task, her product hoard created an intractable situation. He reached out for help which is hero behavior in a dysfunctional family. I feel for them both but she is an adult and a parent.

She should be charged if her son has repiratory issues because of this. I blame them both but the mom more. Imo a 17 yr old is not a child. He totally could've looked up how to clean a shower. Not even that, just get a damn scrub brush, shower cleaner and an afternoon. It's common sense and only a few bucks, you don't even need any real resources to do it. A 17 yr old has the means for that even with no job. The more I watch these videos, the less I feel sympathy for these people tbh. I find it an offense to lump them in with people who are actually victims of circumstances outside of their control. If I were her, I would make them clean it up while I help them, but moreso just redirect them. They should be made to face the consequences of these choices, especially the mom. It will be hard but it will also scare them out of living like this in the future again. And then I would make her take her son to the damn hospital and get his lungs tested. It's just a series of intentionally poor choices and a refusal to make any sort of attempt to remedy it. I don't see why somebody like that is a victim of anything much less deserving of support or sympathy. Assistance programs like these should be given to actual victims or at the very least people who tried to do something about it.

Many of us had our childhoods stolen from us and have mental health issues from it. I regard mine as the worst time of my life, with no father and a mother with mental health problems. She eventually remarried an abusive man that my sister and I had to deal with, along with the daily domestic violence and when that broke up, she married an alcoholic with PTSD. We never expected anyone to clean up after us. We did it ourselves. I spent the first 62 years of my life not only looking after the house from an early age but protecting and looking after my Mum. Not that she appreciated any of it and she made it clear she hated me. But everyone else deserted her, moving so far away that I was the one left with the 300km journey every time she needed help. Her choice to up and move and leave me with the 300km journey, by the way, not mine. My sister is flying in next week to help me clear out Mum's house and settle Mum's husband into full time care. His kids? only concerned with how soon he'll die and they can get their hands on his money. It's us that have enduring guardianship and are looking after him, even after the hell he's put us through, even though we're not beneficiaries of his will. We never let our homes, before and after leaving home, get into this state.

Sometimes people use child to mean someone's kid, which in that case, everyone is someone's child at any age. The way I meant it was a 17 yr old, developmentally is not a little kid (i.e child). It's not unreasonable to expect him to learn how to clean a shower or seek out the knowledge. This is definitely about his age because the whole point is that he is supposed to be more independent and therefore able to do something about his situation than an actual child who wouldn't have the means to do that. So yes age completely changes the outcome of this situation. As for why the onus is on him, it's because the mother is selfish. Simple. She has no incentive to clean that shower, though she has the capability, because she already has her own clean shower at work. The only other thing that would incentivize her to clean that shower would be so her son would have somewhere to shower as well, but clearly she's ok letting him bathe in mold. Why shouldn't somebody like that deserve any blame? The son doesn't have anywhere else to shower, (although he could've used a gym one really) so the onus is on him to actually do something to make that shower useable since his mother won't do it. And yes, I watched the video, so yeah you could say I know the whole story. These are just excuses. Everybody goes through mental struggles in life, but not everybody responds to them the same. That's what matters. The difference between somebody who is successful in life and somebody who isn't is one that stops being a victim of their circumstances and starts taking charge of them instead. In this case, no he is not really a victim. He didn't have to put up with that shower. So no I don't think that's valid. People that are truly victims are ones that actually have no way out, and even then they still try.

I think that Rob will be okay, no matter what. He knew that this wasn't something that they could fix in their own, and he asked for help. When he moves and lives on his own for the first time, I think seeing this sort of transformation will give him the motivation and confidence to know that no matter how his own place ends up being, he'll be able to manage it on his own, or ask for help again.

Best cleaning products: dishsoap (#1), toiletbowl cleaner (acidic) and scouring milk/paste. For dirty ovens/really bad fatty dirt it's oven cleaner (alkaline). Auri also uses chlorine to get rid of coffee build up and I used it in toiletbowls for years until I switched to using mostly toiletbowl bowl cleaner, my mistake was that I didn't let it sit for long enough. She has a few old videos in which she talks more in depth about cleaning products/methods. Never use oven cleaner and toulet bowl cleaner together, never use chlorine with hot water, you can mix all I didn't specify though with each other and those specified, but in the end: just use them after each other. Dish soap is used to get rid of grime and dirt and often times the limescale sits on top of the dirt, so you don't need to take extra care of that. If you have limescale however use toiletbowl cleaner, also in sinks, and well I'm also using it on tiles if the grout is dirty. Works like a charm.

all it takes is a bottle of bleach and some elbow grease. It didn't get like that over-night. If his mum is showering elsewhere then this is his filth, and his responsibility to do something about. Does he expect his Mum to wipe his backside for him still? Going in there and cleaning it for him teaches him nothing but not to lift a finger and cry until someone does everything for him.

Yep, it's easy to see children brought up in squalor and with a hoarder either become passive sufferers or start to imitate the parent. She should have had serious intervention about her issues years ago. She WILL recreate the filth for her own comfort and basically she does NOT care about her son in any normal way, she cares about self soothing with disgusting bits of garbage. It's like living with a full blown alcoholic. They care about one thing and it's not another human. People like this by middle age are usually lost causes. Yeah, if she has hoarding problems, or doesn't like anything moved, that can be a problem. I know someone like that. You want to give up before going in to help them clean, because of all the negotiations, what can and can't be touched, how much time they would you give you, during what part of the day, you have to stop if vacuum cleaner, your movement starts to annoy them, and all that. Ive been watching this channel for awhile and decided to see if the scrub daddy cream would work on my problem shower floor… i have literally tried all the “hacks” and different brushes. Toilet bowl cleaner with bleach got a lot of stuff up but i was left with this layer of grey stuff that would just NOT come up!! I was considering ripping out the tile and replacing it with fiberglass but then I tried the scrub daddy cream with a clorox tub and tile scrubber and it actually came up! So thank you Auri and Scrubby Daddy for saving me hundreds of dollars and time! And the cream doesnt smell bad either.

My kids when they were young and living at home, even from age 7 would thank me all the time for having such a clean home. I worked several jobs, had a useless husband but my house was always immaculate. Even if I got home at 1 AM after a nursing shift I made sure the house was perfect before I went to bed. Laundry was always done, folded. Everything looked so clean. It annoyed hubby( ex now). He said women saw invisible dirt. But the kids would come home from playing at a friends and always mentioned whenever they came home how they appreciated our home. I wanted to at least reduce any stress caused by mess. I guess it was partly my Love language. Kids should be kids, happy, clean and comfortable. I did give them chores, folding clothes sometimes, picking up toys after they were done playing etc. it was the least I felt I could do. Now as grown adults with families they all keep really clean homes. Just do the cleaning as you make the mess. I’m retired now with a lovely hubby. My home is always clean. A bit more cluttered with a few of our collections but not messy. I hope the homeowners you clean for manage to keep it up a bit better than prior. Trust me I have depression and anxiety and it’s harder to get motivated but I still keep up. Thank you for what you do. Love from Texas. ❤️❤️❤️

Yes, my kids used to get annoyed at me when I told them off for just making a mess in the kitchen and walking away, leaving it for me or my husband to clean. As they got older all I would have to say is “what’s wrong with this picture “ and they would quickly rectify it. 😂 As they got older they would come home from some friends places and comment how nice it was to live in a clean and clutter free home. ❤🇦🇺🦘🐋

@@laurelldockall2399 I don't remember thanking my mom, either, but she has passed away and I can only "tell" her posthumously. :( I was the youngest of 6 and didn't appreciate how much mom did. Then I had a family (mom passed when I only had one 18mo. old), and as my family grew it was harder and harder to keep things clean and tidy. We had a lot of stress in our house and I fought depression for many years. It was cluttered, but NOT trashy. We kept up with the dishes most days and it never got to looking anything like Auri's cleanups, but it was cluttered with baby things and toys and clothes. I wasn't a hoarder, but people would give us bags and bags of hand me downs and toys, because we had 8 kids and didn't have a lot of money. That just meant that I had a new job of going through all the bags and, especially with depression, that was hard! Our house was small and husband worked a weird schedule and I ended up sleeping on the futon most nights and sometimes it didn't even get folded back into a couch during the day. :( Fast forward 15 years and we've "launched" 5 kids and now the house is tidy and clean and uncluttered. Whew! Thank you, mom, for all your hard work when I was a child!!

I’m glad the 17 year old reached out for help. That bathroom is terrible. But I hope the boy learns how to keep the bathroom clean from now on. It needs to be done daily… There are spray products that can be used after the shower to make daily clean up easier. It’s too bad the mom isn’t teaching him how to clean herself. The boy needs to learn that because he will be living on his own soon enough.

Judging by the feminine products that were in that bathroom the mother played a huge role in cluttering it to beyond being able to clean it and when the opportunity to shower at her work came up she just walked away from the mess she made without a backward glance OR any consideration for her son. 😢 I think the lack of consideration for her 17yo son showed in a Big way was the nursery wallpaper and the tiny bed in his room. I can’t see him wanting to have friends or his girlfriend seeing that his room is a nursery 😢😢😢

Poor Rob. By 17, he should have been taught that cleaning, scouring, laundry and folding and putting away and organizing and cooking and cleaning and balanced meals, etc. etc. are EVERY PERSON'S responsibility. By 17, he should be able to learn (via books, internet and valid sources) how to remove old wallpaper, every trace of paste, spackle holes, painter's tape and take some investigating PAINT itself. He is not stuck with baby wallpaper, just a baby mentality. And I will mention that the best rule my folks had was no opposite sex were allowed in our upstairs bedrooms, nor to hang out unless one parent was home. IT DOES NOT MATTER if your parent is the best or worst example, as we all still can learn how to overcome and take pride in our own self and not expect to be paid besides. SO this little gal made a how-to video of CLEANING. Do it daily and weekly as life is not a once and done.

Hopefully the Mom needs to have an intervention for her hoarding. But as you said, maybe they'll all start to purge stuff ....... it clutters your home and your mind. reminds me of my mom’s place, can def relate to rob in a way 😬 my case definitely wasn’t as severe as this but i remember being so embarrased as a kid that our house was so filthy, would never bring any friends over. i remember our microwave, the dust and grease on top of it was so ingrained that it took me like 20 minutes to scrape it off when i got to the age where i started cleaning. i remember being only 10 years old the first time i started to clean, i was that young and i still knew that it was ”wrong” slash gross in a way. there was dust everywhere, and it smelt weird, which my friends also pointed out right after they entered in. i hated the smell of our home, it smelt ”old” in a way, prolly the dust particles idk. glad i live on my own now, since my mom never changed and our brand new apartment felt so disgusting after just a few months of living. i couldn’t bare it, i do notice myself being obsessed with cleanliness and being afraid that my house will end up looking like that of my mom’s. it sucks, brings me pointless anxiety, i feel like my place is a mess if i don’t clean it constantly. being surrounded with mess and dirt prolly stressed me out as a kid.

I was more than 30 year old woman, when I moved again with my husband and kids to my parents’ home and my dad was hoarder. I hoped I will be able to make my home beautiful as I was child and it was ma goal. I stucked in that home, because we weren’t able to do anything, my dad didn’t agree to do any renovation to make our lifes easier like fe. clean running water. If I moved something to the trash, it has generated so many conflicts. I felt so overwhelmed and frustrated. One stupid one at my work mixed clorine with another cleaning product and died instantly from it. We had told her many times not to mix anything with clorine but she still did. She was so affraid of bacteria that she ignored every advice... Thankfully all patients were asleep in their rooms and no one else than her died. But the entire department smelled horrible and the whole building had to be aired out...
