Mr Mister well it’s more complicated and more close to the actual thing than what this man thinks. The concept is using breeds that have relation to the extinct species and selecting the desired characteristics to bring the extinct species back, sometimes species that aren’t related but that have common physical and genetically traits will be used to, I don’t know if that’s also used in the aurochs. To keep it simple, just imagine they grab a bunch of your great grandfather descendants and marry them so that the offspring basically is genetically and physically as close as possible to your great grandfather (obviously not such risk of inbreeding as would be happening in the example I’m giving).

I’m pretty sure I heard an geneticist say that it wasn’t possible (and the ethics are in question) at this moment. Interesting this isn’t the first time someone tried. One of hitlers right hand scientists/genetics men and his brother (I believe) tried to make an auroch and basically achieved some aesthetic success but that seems to be it. (He is famous but I can’t remember the name). I think he attempted a equine as well and gave it his name. I think someone said his creation were no more than cows that look like aurochs.
@gutemorcheln61344 жыл бұрын
@@swilson5320 Heck is the name. Lutz and Heinz Heck. They were brothers and owners of zoos in Berlin and Munich, and attempted to re-create the Auerochs by mixing ancient breeds. They collected primitive breeds from southern Europe (some of them still in use for that purpose) as well as modern breeds without obvious similarities to ancient aurochsen. They did have succes to a degree, especially regarding coat colour. But horns were still too short and thin, they were too small overall and lacked other typical features the Aurochs had. Nontheless they claimed to have been succesful in re-creating the true Aurochs, partly because in that time nobody really knew how the Aurochs looked like. The outcome, heck cattle, were released in some areas, but most fell victim to the war. heck horse were also created, they look similar to konik horses. But this isn't a genetic test exactly. It's not the attempt to re-create the Aurochs exactly and with the same genetics, but to create a similar looking breed of wild cattle that may replace it in nature. Aurochsen were very important for shaping European and Asian ecosystems, thus the plan is to create a breed that can fill this now empty niche.

HOLY COW no litterly holy cow how on earth did they bring those guys back by successful breeding or what
@YamiKisara6 жыл бұрын
Yes, they compared the Aurochs DNA with various breeds, then selected certain breeds that fit the description in both appearance and behaviour and through selective breeding managed to back breed them as close as this, even though it's not perfect yet. Just google the Tauros Programme, that's the name of the whole process.

YamiKisara Yami, do they contain a fragment of bulls that contained some auroch's DNA? I know that some breeds of bulls in India and Germany contain some of their DNA. Also something about a nazi breeding effort, bulls too violent, then kaboom, death.

Even Julius Caesar wrote about the aurochs. He said that it was the most fearsome prey for the German warriors, who hunted it for its trophy horns. He said that meeting one in the forest without a well-organized party was sure death.

There are both Dutch and German breeding programs trying to recreate the Auroch. Look up Taurus Program.

Interesting and cool stuff. Nonetheless, I question the completeness of this endeavor. I have a hunch that many of the alleles that made the aurochs what it was back in the day, have been lost.

Doesn’t look like an aurochs quite yet but we are getting there I guess. Horns aren’t the right shape, the shoulder should appear more muscular almost like bison, and the animal should be overall larger

They are *not* aurochs. They are an attempt to replicate aurochs as closely as possible through crossbreeding and breeding back techniques. These methods cannot bring back the original genotype of the species, living individuals only represent a visual approximation to how aurochs are thought to appear.

They have the look, but these are not Aurochs, and obviously so. Aurochs were 1.8 metres tall at the shoulder, were much MUCH larger, and were very aggressive indeed. Not sure why anyone would make this false claim. They are not genetically Aurochs. Period.

@@Avatrass Yes, these aren't real aurochsen, they are extinct and will never come back like they were. These are so-called "Tauros-cattle", the outcome of some "backbreeding" projects, which aren't over now. They try to improve the animals further into the direction of real aurochsen, so they once truly will look like the real aurochs, but it never will be a real aurochs again tough. This specific herd looks like it had a great influence by Spanish landrace breeds, especially Sayaguesa.

I'm just noticing this video. While aware of programs hoping to reproduce the Aurochs, I'm still pretty sceptical. And while some animals have been reproduced that have some characteristics of the Aurochs, in my mind they still fall short. One thing being that they were Huge animals, not just big. The other reason for my scepticism is that it has always been my understanding that they were highly aggressive animals. Is that kind of aggressive nature also being looked for? If so, can't say I approve. As for the "hump" on the neck a couple people commented on, that is, and always has been, highly developed musculature on the males - common among breeds with very heavy horn/antler structures.
@BRUHVADO6 жыл бұрын
now all they need is stuff to hunt them..asiatic lions? amur tigers? why not
@martialkintu20355 жыл бұрын
European cave lions, but I guess that we'd need cave hyanas to compete with them along with other ancient European beasts. But not too ancient. Just ancient enough to spread diversity on the European wilderness. Right now Europe consists mostly of mountain, rivers, lakes, bogs and forest. In the Pleistocene, things were much more diverse.

@risingmagpie91994 жыл бұрын
Sadly in modern Europe giant predators like lions or hyena are not a good idea. They need a lot of space, even the more untouched mountain range can't hold a viable population. Also public intolerance would be tremendous. Better use actual fauna rather than reintroduced one. Wolves and bears can works relatively well as apex predator. If it's not enough,, humans can be the third apex predator.
