Such a tragedy, so sad and yet it confuses me why this happened in Laos. Rice whiskey, which produces Ethanol (the safe alcohol) is dirt cheap to make in Laos. I don't understand why anybody would be deliberately purchasing Methanol to add to drinks when the local whiskey is so cheap and safe to drink.. unless it was deliberate. Lao Lao (rice whiskey) is cheaper than methylated spirits here.. If it was from the local brew this would be an everyday occurrence as anybody is allowed to make whiskey. Young people have been traveling to and partying in Vang Vieng for many years consuming free drinks and more, and methanol poisoning has never been an issue here. Yes, back in 2013 a lot of party bars were closed down on the river due to intoxicated drownings, but not because of methanol. There's more to this than we currently know. My condolences to all families involved 🙏

I don't hear these being said enough these days, but it used to be common pratice in schools, homes, via conversations with friends, and even strangers, to make sure you keep to the following: - NEVER leave your drink alone no matter the Country, house, or gym that you travel to - OR, the old saying of; "if it's not sealed, don't drink it". - NEVER let anyone else pour your drinks, no matter how well you think you know them and no matter the gender... unless they're a licensed professional behind the bar or cafe counter. - NEVER keep your bottle unsealed if you go somewhere with a sealable bottle. - NEVER leave your friends to fend for themselves (or vise versa) if you or they are in unfamiliar territory. - ALWAYS make sure atleast 2 people know where you are. You can do this via a text message, a FB message, a phone call, or a hand written note. These guidelines aren't bulletproof and they aren't saying you should be paranoid about any and everyone around you, but it's better than you or your loved ones around you, being completely oblivious. These rules could help save you or those you love.
@Hotwire_RCTrix22 сағат бұрын
Not spiked. Poorly distilled spirits will often contain methanol. That's why distillers are licensed in Australia.
@vandalcreed16 сағат бұрын
Licenced don't mean squat. Plenty of people are licenced to drive a car and there are deaths anyway. I'd say it's its the culture of respect towards another human that our country endorses is the real difference.
@Hotwire_RCTrix15 сағат бұрын
@vandalcreed NO, it's the information about the risks of distilling that you must know to obtain a licence that separates us. The point is to bring awareness to it, believe it or not, there are people who don’t know these things are happening.
