Very neat! I picked up one of the 3 chimes about 5 years ago. The one I have was never painted. They are very interesting horns, very delicate for something that would be mounted on railroad equipment. The older RVBs have screw in back caps rather than fasteners. And the sound, man. They definitely earned the nickname "screaming cats"!

It's great to know that more and more collectors here in the States are picking these things up. I agree that these horns are a bit too fragile for a railroad application but our friends down under don't seem to mind. They have a sound all their own. It's not a very pretty sound, but it is unique, and that's why I love it!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. You and Mike have been uploading videos about trains? That is so neat! And I didn't know you and Mike had the same amount of train horns, that was radical! Very radical!

the 5 chimes got the screaming cat nickname, the 3 chimes were probably something like "annoying"

Nice video and horn. The bells are actually quite inconsistent in terms of material. Some bells have a brass flare, and copper rear section, whilst others are the opposite. There is also a bronze power chamber variant of this horn, which is the 6320-007B. The aluminium variant is 6320-007A. The 6320-007 were introduced in around 1977-1978. There was a predecessor to this known as the S75-S3, which was introduced around the mid 1950's. The only difference is the power chambers on the S75's are always bronze, and they have threaded screw-in back caps, which are completely round like the power chamber body. The 6320 series went with the nut+bolt tabbed style power chamber+cap assembly. Sound wise, the two variants are pretty much identical. You can actually tinker with how the horn sounds quite considerably by adjusting the back cap nut tension. It alters the frequency as well. I find that making each bell speak about 5-10% sharper than their advertised notes yields a much sweeter tone. Given the grey paint colour, and likelihood of your horn being mounted upside down in service, it probably came off a Melbourne Hitachi or Comeng EMU. As of around 2019, these horns have been discontinued. Price was about 2000AUD for the 6320-007A 3 chime variant.

Very interesting! I do love this little horn because how different it is from my Nathan and Leslie. As of now, I'm pretty pleased with how it sounds, but the nozzle in the 420Hz bell isn't seated flush which I know will cause issues in the future, but I think I can fix it. It's a goofy little bugger, but sure is fun.

These horns were off the electric trains on the Melbourne suburban electric trains. There were on some Victorian railway locomotives

Good pick up mate, I'm glad to see another "Little Aussie Battler " make it to the States and into a collection. As Ding has said above, the torque of the back cap bolts is quite important to the proper operation of the horn as a whole, the 6 bolts can be treated like the early screw in back caps on S75 RVB horns and Leslie tyfon horns, in that if you wind them up too tight they will stop the horn from sounding. Consider running slightly longer bolts with nyloc/locking nuts so that when the sweet spot for torque is found there's no chance of it being lost due to vibrational affects.

mate those are common here in melbourne, victoria, australia used by: hitachi emus, comeng emus, x'trapolis emus and semiens emus. (edit: the hitachs were scrapped quite a while ago.)

Yes indeed! From pictures I've seen, I'm guessing that this horn came off of a Comeng. It's certainly a fun horn to have.
@TheComengSset8 ай бұрын
slight error, anything built after the comeng's were not fitted with RVB 3 chimes, X'traps had alstom 2 tones and semiens had Zollner Makrofon 370 & 660.

It does kinda sound like that! I love this horn, not only is it super rare here in the States, it also sounds like nothing that has ever run in America. Hoping to buy more horns over the years as funds allow. The more the merrier!

Yep, this is that horn. He's actually got another one for sale at the moment. Not sure how or where he got ahold of all these RVBs but I'm glad I got this one. As I said in the video, these are extremely rare here in the States. I don't know an exact number but I'd be willing to bet that there are less than 10 in America.
