"Why is there no smoke? The fireman (the guy who makes the steam for the engineer to use) is firing the engine well. He is using as little fuel as possible, to make as much steam as possible. This means there is little smoke." I was going to comment the same thing - this is impressive firing indeed.

Man, just look at all those rods GO! She is really bookin! Even keeping up with that probably brand new at the time FJ Cruiser (10 years later, those have retained their value well). Wish I could come across some old iron moving at speed like this irl. 🚂💨💨

I came to this video because I remember very vividly seeing this locomotive pass by overhead on the freeway. I remember it was the 10 freeway and I remember spotting this thing. I was very young and now I wonder the whereabouts of this current locomotive. also that blue suburban rocks

I think the reason I always loved steam engines is they almost make no sense to me. I've engineered rocket propulsion systems, high-bypass turbofans, high performance electric motors, but that stuff all makes sense to me, they are pretty straight forward. Just watching the cyclic rate on some of those coupling rods, considering how heavy they are, seems like the kinetic energy should just rapidly disassemble the entire thing. It's so violent but so orchestrated and balanced at the same time. When you take into account how well timed it needs to be to operate at any meaningful degree of efficiency in order to attain these speeds, it is just a complete work of art.

I've been a fan of steam locomotives my whole life, and I'm still mesmerized by what feels like black magic physics that go into their operation. And to think that they were designed and built without computers.

I like the K5HLB by a slight margin. It reminds me of the old Leslie RS5T, except that the Leslie had a sharp octave, with the no.5 bell sounding C#, instead of C. The most shameful sounding horn these days is the one NS has put on most of their AC44C6M rebuilds. I don't know which one it is. It's plenty loud, but it's high and screechy. Thanks TrainTrackTrav for putting the horn pattern on the screen. There's only a half step difference between the two.

In Indonesia, the locomotive that uses the Nathan Airchime horn is CC 206, yes of course because the locomotive manufacturing factory is from General Eletrick. Sometimes the train lover community in Indonesia often calls it "CC 206 horn" or "puooongggssss" because the horn is very loud and resonant. so that someone around him was shocked to hear the sound of the horn
