Thanks for taking us along on your hunt. Congratulations to Dave for taking that magnificent red stag. After being inspired by your videos, I intended taking up deer hunting in 2023 but a cancer scare and surgery have put a hold on this. Another bout of surgery in about 6-8 weeks, then recovery time. So it looks like I'll begin hunting seriously in August/September. I will do this! Cheers, Steve

Brother you have an absolute talent. I have been getting into bow hunting from watching channels from the US, and yours compete. Your passion, story telling and willing to deepdive with your deer hunting knowledge is amazing/processing. Especially for us novice hunters. Thank you again for what you do. I hope to meet you and shake your hand and have a beer... Even better I hope to have one of these trips with yourself. Best of wishes movingforward bud

A demo of different sausage recipes would probably show best gourmet result if that stag is as old as it appears (without having a close look that can be deceptive). An old bull or ram can be camouflaged too to some extent under culinary treatment, but a mincer often saves a lot of glowing over results that would be spat out in a restaurant. There's a reason export prices for younger stuff is better, & the older stuff goes to mince & burgers. Hinds/young deer are a different quality. Trying a few of the prime cuts from a stag a couple of days after getting it has been a good practice. Some can be ok, others are sausages instead of difficult cooking attempts. Have had a prime condition young stag (est 4 or less) like rubber & some medium age ones ok (particularly in spring). It's led to keeping different animals separate in the freezer, if one samples tough it's easy to know what to mince. instead of lucky dip.

Well deserved, got to be in it to win it! I'd be interested to see what your cameras catch (or even better, you harvest) over the next few years, looking at that pedicle height he still had a good few years of antler development in him
@johnmead8437
@johnmead8437 Жыл бұрын
Looked like an old one past it's best that wasn't ever going to be anything great as a second opinion, footage insufficient to be really sure. A reasonable example stag head on a really big old beast, not many that size. Suspect the fancy recipes would be coming out if not going straight into patties & sausages.

Can spear oneself with the head around the way it was on the pack, tynes pointed back is safer. Trip over it will fall on top of you too, & ventilation with an antler is a nasty wound. Also catches less in thick vegetation. In some situations big ones can be carried around the neck, head up behind, tynes forward & down. Whatever way after awhile their pedigree can be discussed as they exact retribution.

@@AussieBushHarvest A bit more footage of it to show that would give better overall perspective. That weight confirms is was impressive big & not just camera perspective. Gives a good idea what it's like hunting in that area, the trail cams etc make it very interesting. For roars, hinds cycle on day length, not weather. Sound carries better when still, & some big stags don't get really vocal, they can intimidate without making a fuss once they've moved in with the hinds. Hunting disturbance also affects noise.

@@johnmead8437 unfortunately no John, my previous videos made a point of showing lots of that, now if I do Ytube demonetises the videos and they don’t come up in people’s notifications/don’t get seen. So I deliberately edited out the butchery.. which feels crap. But I do have a 3 part series up on a red deer butchery from start to finish which gives the fullest picture, less people have seen it for the reasons just mentioned but I put a lot of work into it.. please scroll back and give it a watch if your keen 🤙
@johnmead8437

@@AussieBushHarvest A good look at the animal & its head etc, antlers look interesting from several angles, and the length & spread is another interest point. One comment is when doing that it's common for the field experts to make some insightful wisdom about all sorts of factors like age, breeding etc, (& ethics & how others should think) and often don't get a 50% pass. It doesn't pay to present stuff that might be more opinion than fact on line, some prominent posters are both full and sure of themselves. Entertaining but probably not in the way intended given the acid produced when it's noted.
