I remember watching this match live many years ago. I thought I was in an alternate dimension where Sharapova suddenly became a threat on clay. She used to be terrible on clay, particularly her movement. But she's learned to make use of clay's slowness to temper and control her aggression. She learned to construct points far better, improve her defensive capabilities (including learning to slide on clay), take balls earlier when the opportunity arises, add disruptive shots to change the pace and rhythm, etc. Clay has long exposed the weaknesses in Sharapova's ultra-aggressive, first-strike tennis. Instead of resigning herself to living with these weaknesses, she's worked hard to making minute changes in her game to turn these weaknesses into strengths. Despite her one-dimensional game, her work ethic and approach is anything but. This is why I've always admired Sharapova as a player -- and it's why she's quite successful despite being naturally less talented than many of her peers. Other players such as Caroline Wozniacki have also made significant changes to their game in the past several years which has made them even more successful. Contrast that to players like Radwanska who never had the audacity to make the necessary changes to their game.

This RG '10 3rd round with Henin is a very important match in Maria Sharapova's career. It often gets overlooked in a lot of journalists minds when they discuss Maria's career up to this point. But ironically, it was after this loss that Sharapova said she realized that she could win the French Open. She had taken one of the best clay courters of all time to three sets on what was still perceived as her least favorite surface at this time. Despite the outcome, it was because of this match that she gained confidence on clay. And not long after 2010, Maria would put together one of most miraculous career transformations over the next 4 years. Since 2012, she has recorded a 63-6 mark on clay, that is remarkable. And it could see her hold the coupe de Suzanne Lenglen for a third time on June 6th. Many champions have what I like to call "harbinger matches" where they show a preview of future success to the world. For Federer it was his 2001 4R at Wimbledon with Pete Sampras. For John McEnroe it was losing to Jimmy Connors in the Wimbledon semis of '77. For Maria Sharapova, I feel that it was really this match that started her on the path to becoming a clay court specialist. And this match could take on even more significance depending on Maria's success on clay at the end of her career. We will see. Either way, it stands out in my mind as one of her most important matches.

sharapova hit many top spins, varied angles, changed pace, even served and volleyed, and yet people again and again say that she is one dimensional player? well, at core yes. she is a power player, everything in her game revolves around power and hardcore baseline hitting. that does not diminish her skills or talent. actually, my opinion is that there are very few one dimensional players, cause in bigger or smaller measure they all possess variety, just like serena's game is based on her serve and power, henin's on retrieving, that backhand and slices, davenport's on her serve and big baseline game, kim's on covering the court and her forehand, hingis' on net play, changing the pace and anticipating etc...every player has a multitude of different elements in their game, it's just that they base their whole identity as a tennis player on certain aspects in which they excell.

@sandragiant7777 жыл бұрын
svichky, I think you misunderstand what one dimensional means. Every player in the top 20 can hit with top spin, angles, change pace, and occasionally service and volley - those are the basics - they don't qualify to make a player multi-dimensional. Maria has one game - she hits hard, then harder, then hardest. If that doesn't work, she has no "B game" - she has no other strategy that is within her comfort zone to fall back on.

But it pretty much stops there. Her game is the typical one dimensional crap all female players seem to have these days (power base liner), her repertoire of shots is small, nowhere near what Justine can do. She's basically a very low rank MALE player (because she's built like one) playing a woman's game. So even if she goes up against truly good players like Justine, she just eventually overpowers them due to sheer brute force anyway. She needs to be put into a different class division to be fair. Pregunta del día: en escala del 1 al 10 qué tan dopada estaba Sharapova en ese partido. 🤔

Not to my eyes. I only see a downward trajectory before she hit it.

Henin had almost perfect mechanical movements, very efficient drive that can get the maximum power from her body. Sharapova and others doesn't have that so they are not getting the maximum power from their drives due to bad mechanics even whey they seem to be making a great effort.

Sharapova's screaming should be banned in the pro tour. If the fans can't cheer between points (they are the paying patrons by the way), then why is it not applicable to the players as well? I love Henin's finesse game, mental toughness, and smart play. In this game, she really outsmarted Sharapova with all-court game: slice backhand, drop shots, volleys, overheads, aces at the T. Sharapova tried to redeem herself from embarrassment by executing some drop shots herself as well, but not as well-disguised as Henin's.

Now guys, please, can someone intellectually honest, apart from preferences, explain me how Sharapova's shouts aren't considered hindrance? How is that possible?

Even though she lost, I always thought this was the match where Sharapova "figured out" red clay.

Justine was a tiny powerhouse with a complete all around game and superb timing. Really beautiful to watch. I hate that she felt that she had to engage in poor sportsmanship on occasion. I think she fell victim to insecurity about her size. But it clearly wasn't a factor given her results. There still isn't an active player save Venus and Serena who have matched or surpassed her grand slam singles wins.

Awful screaming from Maria in that third set. Great play by Justine. :)

Sharapova's constant shouting was unbearable and should have been banned. Glad Henin, one of the most (technically) sophisticated and refined players ever, won this match.

henin is the best female tennis player i've seen. no other player was/is as complete. i love graf, but she couldn't/didn't develop a topspin backhand (don't let's get started on the graf backhand debate- it comes down to this: when a drive backhand would have beaten the net player, graf sliced and lost), and for such a terrific mover she seemed woefully unimaginative in her defense, often leaving balls that were utterly reachable by the 2000's. i like serena, too, but her complete lack of grace and feeling (except on her serve) leaves me cold. i mean, imagine if henin was 6ft tall! imagine what she could do! now make serena 5 foot 5, and... anyway, i could only watch 5 minutes of this- i'm like most men: if i wanna see a skinny russian screaming at the top of her lungs and bashing balls, i'll watch some porn.

Would have liked to see Justine use the drop shot more often, slice and come to the net a bit more in this match..anyway she got it done and I like her game quite a bit..
