@danguee15 ай бұрын
@@tramp2827 There are a thousand male players who she'd lose a backhand exchange with - and 200+ single-handers. So, clearly not the best in terms of winning...
@tramp28275 ай бұрын
@@danguee1 It's hard to reason with people who don't think. Stresses me out. She would lose not because they have a better backhand. Men have larger muscle mass and strength than women. Women have better reflexes but men are faster. That's why Shelly-Ann, good as she is, will never beat Bolt. If Justine had the same tools like the men, they would never beat her. McEnroe says the same thing.
@danguee15 ай бұрын
@@tramp2827 I was just being a bit cheeky. I love Justine's backhand - it is just about the most perfect technical backhand ever (and most beautiful to me). I think I would put it slightly behind Stan's, though - simply because he also has an almost perfect slice (Justine's is merely excellent) and has more touch. I was wryly musing on the meaning of "best": 1) literally better (I will beat everyone else's) or 2) aesthetically and technically? As for using what McEnroe said about Justine's backhand: also take his perspective on that furore about him saying Serena was the best female player. He *_precisely_* said he had to limit Serena to greatest 'female' because she would lose to the #200 male. So really, he was being inconsistent saying Serena was only the best *_female_* player - yet Justine had the *_best backhand_* male or female. Anyway - interesting stuff....

Further, she had developed a very setious autoimmune condition that left her completely drained of all energy and unable to do basic tasks, much less play tennis at the highest level. Henin really is the female Federer. Unbelievable skill, execution, vision, and touch. She is only about 5' 5", which makes her success that much more amazing. She was very, very under-sized in the generation that she came up in when women and men alike had started to understand ideal exercising and training to maximize the physical aspects of their game. For tennis players, there are obviously many ways in which this shift benefits the taller and stronger players more. In an era when other players including Clijsters had started to lift weights and bulk up, Henin was the last one to not go that route and relied solely on skill and technique. And she had so much of it that it pretty much always made up for what she lacked in size and strength. You would rarely see Henin get bullied and overwhelmed on the court by some of the strong players when the shift first happened and most of the women who didn't work out suddenly found themselves getting blown off the court. She really was amazing, and the last time I found women's tennis as interesting as men's. Her backhand was exquisite - I remember seeing her hit upwards of 95 mph on her backhand at times, which is damn fast even for men. Federer's own backhand has rarely exceed 95 mph, and she hit between 85-90 on that wing consistently. Forehand - also a comparably destructive weapon as and similar technique-wise to Federer's... she could really flatten it out and just crush the ball constantly. Net play - one of the few players in the last 20 years who had truly high proficiency at volleying in the day of baseline rallying. She also rocked the drop shot too, and it was just as pretty as Federer's Who knows, maybe if she worked out and got stronger she would have been able to get even better and win more titles, but its awesome to watch a person who really embodies the idea that the skill is what truly matters. The fact that she could consistently hit from either wing as fast as some of the fastet men's shots (in excess of 90-95 mph) is the ultimate testament to the importance of skill to the game of tennis. Most of her far taller and stronger rivals couldn't top 85 mph on their groundstrokes. Super cool to see this little woman on the court with the big game.

Henin was dominant at Roland Garros and Federer was not only winning once and much more telling he didn't even EVER once win either of two of the three clay masters in Monte Carlo or Rome in a 20 year plus career. Even allowing for Nadal that shows that he's not comparable on clay relatively. Henin was a much more accomplished clay player winning RG 4 times in a much shorter career. She never won Wimbledon even once on the flip side. Just because she had a one-handed backhand doesn't make her like Federer or vice versa.

As a Belgian, I grew up watching Henin and Clijsters play at all the big tournaments, facing off against other greats such as Mauresmo, Sharapova, Davenport and the Williams sisters. When they played against eachother, I always rooted for Clijsters (since she’s Flemish), but when it comes to pure technique and skill, Justine was simply unmatched. When watching women’s tennis today, I can’t help but feel that, unlike in men’s tennis where we’ve had the big three, the overall intensity and consistency has dropped and that any of the names I just mentioned in their prime would easily dominate the current generation. (Actually, Serena has already proven this the last couple of years)

There was another Flemish lady behind me who also rooted for her but kept yelling 'Go, Christine!', so I'm not counting that. ^^ In the end, I was very happy for Venus, since she wanted that Diamond Cup so badly. After that match, though, Justine pretty much won every single one of her duels with Kim, and went on the win Roland Garros (against Kim). Yay!

Haven´t seen anything like her yet! a true master of her domain! the closest thing as a great all around player would be Ash Barty when playing her very best, or maybe Andreescu also at her very best. I am not saying the winning game or champions mind as there are many AMAZING players with huge weapons who have writen history, but just the mastery of every shot in the book, the variety, the volleys, the transition game, the feel and the tactic aproach. Thanks for this upload, miss this petite wonder!

I espesially enjoyed the Serena Williams matches i remember because it was always brute force against artistry and these matches are a showcase on how technic can sometimes beat power and intimitation... always great to watch

Great video compilation. I really hate to be that “woke” guy, and I know what you are trying to say, but Justine Henin won 7 grand slam tournaments on her own merit. She is the Justine Henin of women’s tennis! She shouldn’t have to be characterised by a man. Much as I love Federer #strongwomen
@RogerThatTennis4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I didn't mean to be sexist, I just think her style of play is kinda similar to Roger. But I get that she's very unique as a woman as well!

Her technique, speed, footwork is just extraordinary. I think she has the most beautiful technique I've ever seen. So pure.

Probably the most technically complete player of the past 20 years..., forehand, dropshots, volleys, slices, lobs, good serve considering her height, and of course the greatest backhand of all time... she had speed, finesse and power, and was a true all courter as she could play as a baseliner or even as an S&V player, ... A pitty she had such a short career. Definately an underarchiever.
@RogerThatTennis4 жыл бұрын
Great player indeed!
@regulusarcturus3 жыл бұрын
You can’t really say she is an underachiever when she lacked the competitive drive and motivation to keep pushing herself. She was very mental tough and competitive when she was on top, but as soon as things would get tough she gave up. She didn’t underachieve IMO.
@mauroc47413 жыл бұрын
@@regulusarcturus well, we have different opinions i guess. I was saying that IMO she was the most complete player of her generation. Kind of like the Federer of female tennis.

The best in the world for a long period Amazing how strong a little woman can be Very technical and the best backhand ever Definitely top 5 of all time in woman tennis
@regulusarcturus3 жыл бұрын
Definitely not in the top 5. Serena, Graf, Court, Wills, Navratilova, Evert, Seles, King and Connolly are all considerably greater than her and Venus, Goolagong, Bueno and Lenglen also have a stronger argument in the all time rankings than Henin. Henin is somewhere around #10-#15 all time.

The last 2 topspin backhand winners of Henin I just went "woa..." I've never seen a female player hit the backhand like that before or after her. Ashley Barty, besides her dh backhand, imo has the game and variety shot making like Henin. Actually her one handed slice backhand is probably the best in WTA, her slice backhand destroys her opponents.

Justine is like a tennis school for kids today who want to play tennis. Today tennis really lacks players like herself and Hingis who had touchy hands. Both were amazing also I think i would add Mauresmo here. Some of the most underrated tennis players with deceptive abilities as well.
