Back in my late primary scholl years my best friend's dad was a SAR freight train driver. On several occasions, after school, we would meet Dad as the train came into the station and got to hop in the cab while they did their shunting. Even got to do a run to the next town and back. Getting to walk through the engine room was special too. Magic times. Magic machines.

I beg to differ. There is no ALCO legacy in a GE. ALCO started with McIntosh and Seymour engines as a starting point in their diesel development. GE started with Cooper Bessemer engines. They are two totally separate families of engines and share nothing in common in the design.

Wondering what the pump noise at the start, is it a fuel primer or lube oil pre-lube? On big CATs they pre-lube the engine before they start with an electric pump, in fact on any really big diesel. I’ve got a feeling on EMDs that noise is a fuel pump primer, not sure about GEs.

Weird question - Do you mind if I use some small loops of these to create sound effects for free mods for Transport Fever 2? You're an amazing, unique source of reference sounds from a fixed recording source in various conditions and with very little contamination. Excellent for sounds for Australian loco mods. :D ( For some reason Queensland Rail or Aurizon aren't real keen on me crawling on, around and under their stuff to record audio and take measurements. 😆)
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER6 ай бұрын
Belive it or not that's the media mod on the gopro.. It seems to handle the noise very very well!. Feel free. I've got separate sound recording equipment but so far haven't been overly successful in getting it spot on yet.
@ThroneOfBhaal6 ай бұрын
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Damn, that does a great job! The 567s you posted were amazing quality as well. I usually use sounds of engine idle, low power - middle power- high power and if I can get them, layer tractions motors and turbo whistle. Air compressor start, running and stop are also really good to have. Short loops are usually sufficient, the game is pretty good at fading them in and out and layering them based on speed and power. It's just finding decent recordings that have what I need and are clear and preferably from a recording source that doesn't move in relation to the sound source. Thank you so much for sharing! :) It's much appreciated for audiophiles. xD

Problem is the locomotive us high geared or was back in 1996 doing the road railer. It was authorised to do 130kph. 20kph more than other locomotives such as the AN and DL and CL. So it lacked the low pulling power ue torque for heavy trains.

@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER ok, that would be my next question :D thx for the info, I didn't know that this was a thing (based on the problem of syncing the two drivers). Final question is then who controls the brakes of the train cars? I can easily picture a scenario when if you missunderstood each one, serious damage to wheels and brakes of one of the locos could happed. Sorry to bother you btw
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER5 ай бұрын
@wizrox no it's fine 😊 The leading locomotive has control of the brake so watching the gauges on the rear locomotive will tell us what the leading driver is doing also, but radio communication is the key to doing it safely and not damaging the equipment. It takes some exposure and experience to get it right.
