It’s not a train,it’s a locomotive,and yes it has an engine,a diesel engine,as such it becomes a train when it is coupled with carriages. From Australia just a little education,words mean things by golly.

I'm glad I caught this. In 1984, on a visit to Britain, my train from Edinburgh Waverley to King's Cross stopped at Newcastle. I got out to see what I believed was a Deltic at the head. As I got there, some lads were taking a brass rubbing of the nameplate: King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. I had been following the Deltics after hearing one in a cassette tape I bought in Melbourne, and had been gripped by their rich sound. So I read what I could in the British railway magazines about their sad withdrawal. Well done, DPS for reviving Tulyar. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺

That's a very clean running engine!!! When I first started work in the early 70s I regularly travelled from Newcastle to Kings Cross, then York to Kings Cross because we moved to Yorkshire, on the east coast main line. And of course the trains were pulled by Deltics!! I did this for about 4 years so became very familiar with the journey and the trains. Of course then it was an every day rhing so I never thought to take photos or record the name of the locos. My most lasting memory is walking past the locos when disembarking and feeling the heat after the 200 odd mile journey, and the smell of diesel exhaust, hot oil and brakes. Just another time.

@@philclarke3203 Thanks, they are very fond memories! I do really regret not taking pictures and notes but who did that then for just recording everyday journeys? Different now of course with everyone having a camera with them at all times. I can say that delays were frequent, I recall one where the Loco broke down in a remote section and it took over 90 mins before we got moving again! Also, the catering was dire! My solution was to take my own food and a flask of tea, much cheaper and far better! Still, it was of it's time and now of course an historic period for BR. My memory may not be correct here, but I seem to recall a loco named Duke of Gloucester and one with a naval related name, would that be correct?

I was born in 53, started train spotting wiv me big bruvver at Hornsey, He went on to be an electrician at Clarence Yard 34G. My love alway was and still is the Eastern Region both the GN and GE . I saw DP1 running and remember the absolutely stunning sound that twin Napier deltics produced. A lot of rime spent at KX that even in diesel days was exciting. Lost count of the Deltics I cabbed at KX, drivers were could, they even let you start them up and gave you a ride down the end of the platform. Fond memories of the gloom and smell of diesel on cold winter day. All gone, ALL GONE. I need a glass of single malt and some black and white photos for a nostalgia trip.. @12crepello on of my favourite haunts was the widened lines. I used to go to Moorgate thrn catch a train to Finsbury Park then either the 127 259 or 279 home to Sevensisters and St Ann's Road. The real treat of the widened lines were going on the Quadart sets that lasted until 1966, they were often pulled by a class 24 which sounded wonderful as it climbed the bery steep hotel curve tunnel up to platform 16.

That's a fantastic piece of work. Retford was my local place to hear the roar of the southbound expresses over the "dive under" The sounds and smells coupled with the the vibrations of engine and rolling stock were wonderful. The sounds in the passenger tunnel were great too but always a reminder that you had missed the sight of something. As to the Vulcans the clear blue skies were sometimes accompanied by the Vulcan "Howl". What happy days a child could have in the early sixties!

Love the route indicator. Being old enough to have seen these live, I've followed Tulyars fall and rise closely. It has a special meaning to me as it was the Deltic I saw the most times, by quite a margin. Pretty decent startup, relatively clean and the joyous clatter of all those timing cogs on the end of the engine. I wish it was blue though, I'm not quite at the green era. I can remember when the Deltic was moved around the stations it was going to be running into . When it tried to enter Leeds Central Station it tore up the slabs on the edge of the platform as the engine couldn’t pass that point because the curve of the platform edge protruded too far out and was caught by the middle of the engine . Oops what a miscalculation on the part of the engineers!

A couple of questions... what were the meanings of the markings on the nose? The two white dots seen on one? And did they not have headlights? Run only in daylight? Did the British rail systems ever convert from the screw and hook couplers? Seeing these in person is on my bucket list.
@12crepello
@12crepello 22 күн бұрын
@@The_DuMont_Network All trains that run in the UK main line have a "headcode". This consists of a number, a letter, and two further numbers. It would take a while to explain the meaning here, suggest you search it. These days trains are tracked electronically, but in the days previous to this they were tracked manually from signal box to box. Signallers could identify a train by observing the headcode display on the front of the train in the box you describe. Headlights on trains are a fairly recent addition. They are not used so much to see where they are going, but to give visible warning to track personnel of an approaching train. Prior to this diesel and electric trains had to have a yellow front end for the same purpose. If Tulyar goes onto the main line a headlight will need to be fitted.

It's been a long wait, hopefully not much longer before they get everything ready for a main line run. Your second photo showing the old track layout unchanged from the days of steam 3 types of loco in view those were good days

When these engines came along they weren't well received by drivers as they had limited vision through the windscreen and the cab controls. Adjustments had to be made!

First time I have seen footage of the Deltic prime movers. The engine that sounded rougher also kept smoking even after completing startup -- I guess it is all part of the same thing they still need to fix.

My main spotting days were ‘58 to ‘65 before rugby and girls took over. Always a shame that a girl was never impressed by a Deltic!! I count myself lucky to have been around to watch A4s and Deltics scream over the viaduct at Chester-le-Street. My apologies, but I cannot get used to the blue colour scheme. To me, a Deltic should always be the original green livery.

At first I was puzzled by what you meant by "girls took over". But I'm surprised at my non-comprehension, given the recollection of that very dramatic windy day in 1963, when they took over for me. I had a book at the time containing a great assortment of hobbies that youngsters indulge in, and one chapter was entitled 'Loco Spotting is my Hobby'. On that memorable day in 63, that changed to 'Girl-o Spotting is my Hobby'. It was back in the days when girls dressed as girls, if you take my meaning. Why waste time looking at railway engines when there are distractions like flared skirts, petticoats, high-heels and stockings? True, I've since recovered an interest in trains, aircraft and even some road vehicles, but I'm jolly glad that my adolescence happened when it did, and not a generation later.
