I'm glad I caught this. In 1984, on a visit to Britain, my train from Edinburgh Waverley to King's Cross stopped at Newcastle. I got out to see what I believed was a Deltic at the head. As I got there, some lads were taking a brass rubbing of the nameplate: King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. I had been following the Deltics after hearing one in a cassette tape I bought in Melbourne, and had been gripped by their rich sound. So I read what I could in the British railway magazines about their sad withdrawal. Well done, DPS for reviving Tulyar. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺

That's a very clean running engine!!! When I first started work in the early 70s I regularly travelled from Newcastle to Kings Cross, then York to Kings Cross because we moved to Yorkshire, on the east coast main line. And of course the trains were pulled by Deltics!! I did this for about 4 years so became very familiar with the journey and the trains. Of course then it was an every day rhing so I never thought to take photos or record the name of the locos. My most lasting memory is walking past the locos when disembarking and feeling the heat after the 200 odd mile journey, and the smell of diesel exhaust, hot oil and brakes. Just another time.

@@philclarke3203 Thanks, they are very fond memories! I do really regret not taking pictures and notes but who did that then for just recording everyday journeys? Different now of course with everyone having a camera with them at all times. I can say that delays were frequent, I recall one where the Loco broke down in a remote section and it took over 90 mins before we got moving again! Also, the catering was dire! My solution was to take my own food and a flask of tea, much cheaper and far better! Still, it was of it's time and now of course an historic period for BR. My memory may not be correct here, but I seem to recall a loco named Duke of Gloucester and one with a naval related name, would that be correct?

A couple of questions... what were the meanings of the markings on the nose? The two white dots seen on one? And did they not have headlights? Run only in daylight? Did the British rail systems ever convert from the screw and hook couplers? Seeing these in person is on my bucket list.
@12crepello22 күн бұрын
@@The_DuMont_Network All trains that run in the UK main line have a "headcode". This consists of a number, a letter, and two further numbers. It would take a while to explain the meaning here, suggest you search it. These days trains are tracked electronically, but in the days previous to this they were tracked manually from signal box to box. Signallers could identify a train by observing the headcode display on the front of the train in the box you describe. Headlights on trains are a fairly recent addition. They are not used so much to see where they are going, but to give visible warning to track personnel of an approaching train. Prior to this diesel and electric trains had to have a yellow front end for the same purpose. If Tulyar goes onto the main line a headlight will need to be fitted.

I had a book at the time containing a great assortment of hobbies that youngsters indulge in, and one chapter was entitled 'Loco Spotting is my Hobby'. On that memorable day in 63, that changed to 'Girl-o Spotting is my Hobby'. It was back in the days when girls dressed as girls, if you take my meaning. Why waste time looking at railway engines when there are distractions like flared skirts, petticoats, high-heels and stockings? True, I've since recovered an interest in trains, aircraft and even some road vehicles, but I'm jolly glad that my adolescence happened when it did, and not a generation later.

Thanks. But as stated above, not possible. Well without spending a fortune.

Also the cab is very much like the cockpit of a WW2 Lancaster Bomber as the Deltic is "The Lancaster of the Railways" as both the deltic & The Lancaster are legendary in their own way yet we have never seen the 2 together & what a sound this would make!

I've often wondered what there is under the bonnet that requires a door in from the cab. - - Engine 2 did sound poorly!

Was DP 2 a deltic prototype or just general locomtive prototype? It had a very sad end, sader than the Deltics that just got scrapped
@philclarke320328 күн бұрын
Oddly enough, although looking like a Deltic, DP2 was actually a prototype for the Class 50. Yes a very sad end for it.

Engine no.2 sounds like it has a rod knock. It may be fatally ill.

What's the little door in the middle of the cab for?

@@macdonaldsadler not sure. Maybe to access/ change the headcode panel.

That second egine doesnt sound like she's enjoying herself! Sounds like a blocked injector not getting fuel to a certain cylinder.

How many actually survive in running or nearly running condition ?
@mt51443 ай бұрын
6 x Class 55 Deltics remain which 5 are running order, plus 1 is part of a static exhibition at Margate also a survivor is The Prototype ‘DELTIC’ which forms part of the National Museum Collection ( this Loco do not run as its original engines are missing various parts & differ from the actually Class 55 Loco's)

Although a steam fan, I do love the Deltics. What a sound at full chat. Well done DPS.

Really love the maximum speed reminder in the cab: 100 mph! Travelling in the cab at the speed in these engines must have been like being strapped to a rocket.

Why do people always forget to film one of them shutting down, thats special to, the bag of bolts flying around

Haha, I did get it a couple of times, no flying bolts though lol, but easy to not be ready for it
