Austal Hull 397 - A.P.T James - Launch

This video shows the launch of Austal Hull 397 (A.P.T. James) from the Austal Vietnam shipyard in Vung Tau, Vietnam in May 2020.
Austal Hull 397 (A.P.T. James) is a 94 metre high-speed catamaran designed and constructed for the National Infrastructure Development Co (NIDCO) of Trinidad and Tobago by Austal Vietnam.
The Austal 'Auto Express 94' vehicle-passenger ferry has capacity for 926 passengers, 20 crew and 250 cars (or 90 lane metres and 222 cars) over 2 vehicle decks. With 4 x MAN 16V 28/33D STC diesel engines powering 4 x KaMeWa 112 S3 waterjets, the vessel can achieve 37.5 knots at 90% MCR.
The vessel will operate the 'sea bridge' route between Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean Sea following delivery in the second half of CY2020.

Yep, we have the water taxis, the fast patrol boats, the two Cape class patrol boats still in built and then this one, the APT James. Austal needs to setup a shop here to maintain these vessels.

AUSTAL you are my hero! As a onetime Marine Engineering trainee (no, I am not an engineer's bagcarrier) I am still enamored with ships and see that Austral is creating beautiful pieces of "artwork" in Australia and elsewhere; I wish they were all Oz built but your skills and vision is needed elsewhere in other countries; especially where the cost of manufacturing is so much less than in Oz; ( I wonder by what percentage? ).

i have a question.. what about the supports that were in the drydock.. were those retrieved on the barge with the wheelsets and returned to the shipyard.. do those supports get scraped.. reused for the next build.. or sent with the delivery to the new owners so they have them to safely lift the hull out in years to come without having to build new ones or build up wooden cribbing.. its just a thought.. would somebody at the new owner say.. why are we keeping those and cut them up for scrap..

Wayne p. I thought the same, but those SPMTs are worth a lot of money and well worth having five minutes thought as to how to get them out of the dry dock. Basically, you set up supports from the dry dock bottom to the twin hulls. The SPMTs lower the hull onto the supports, go lower still to clear themselves off the hulls and are then craned out of the dry dock. THEN you sink the drydock and 'launch' the ship.

Three actually. The first one was 109m Express 4 built for Molslinjen launched last year, followed by the 109m Fjord FSTR built by Austal Philippines for Fjordlines, launched in February early this year and then this one 94m A.P.T. James built for NIDCO Trinidad & Tobago. There's also an order for a fourth vessel of this design also going to Molslinjen, the 115m Express 5.

Sometimes we have to turn to other countries to supply vessels for us because we still lack facilities in building vessels, unless for small and maybe mid size ones. Other than that, there's still lack of working class in the maritime industry especially in ship building. Austal is not only building vessels for us, they building for USA, China and Europe as well.
