Austin 7 Restoration - Austin Seven Ruby Episode 2

Welcome to our Austin 7 restoration update. We are rebuilding an Austin Seven Ruby and in this episode we see that the chassis is almost ready to receive the engine.
We have overhauled the brakes and re built them. They needed nothing more than a clean up. The brakes on an Austin 7 are fairly simple so they just needed to be checked to see if replacement parts where needed. The Austin Seven Ruby is a very light car so the brakes are light too.
The engine to the Austin 7 needed to be freed up but had not seized. It is now turning over and we have some spares on order to put it back together again.
The gearbox and clutch will get a service and hopefully we will find that they are working well.
The petrol tank to the Austin 7 needed to have a couple of bolts removed. They had seized in place and we could not free them. We have taken the decision to drill out the bolts and re thread the holes to a larger metric size so that we can re assemble the tank.

We are learning as we go. Give it a go as the spares are abundant as is the advice available on the forum and through the club. Go to a club meeting and experience it yourself.

fuel tank sender ~ you can easily take the top off to check the inner workings. They are probably ok and will work. Mine had a cork float and a large blob of corrosion on the outside. Replacement is not the easiest to find but is available. The gauge may stick but will be basically ok ~ remember the third wire when refitting.

Good tips. The sender unit is cleaned and refitted. The resistance changed as the float moved so fingers crossed.

On the fuel tank sender, if you drill through the tank, there is a chance of fuel leaking past the screws. Much better to have blind holes.

Good point but we have already re tapped the holes to a larger metric size. We will keep a check for leaks and fix if we find them.
