Austin, you would do well to know the work of Bruce K. Alexander in regards to addiction studies, the work of Dr. Sapolsky on the long term effects of prolonged exposure to elevated levels of stress hormones, and the ACE studies as the effects of stress induced subclinical hypercortisolism within the field of psychoneuroendocrinology. There lies your answers.

Thanks for your input! I am aware of all the research you mentioned, and it informed my study questions. What we do not yet know is if placement into foster care alters trajectories of substance use and sexual risk behavior among youth already at risk due to maltreatment, using advanced causal inference methods to account for confounding (i.e., inherent differences among maltreated youth who are placed into foster care versus those who remain with biological parents).
