I highly suggest you take a look at Home Free's version of Unchained Melody. They turned it a little doo-wop, but the background vocals take it to another level. I adore both Austin's and Home Free's versions.

Such a beautiful voice. Home Free also has a version which is pretty great. Austin says this got on You Tube "by accident". He'd recorded it but wasn't sure about it. His girlfriend said he needed more content on his channel and when he got up the next morning, there it was. Thank heaven for Amberly. There are several live performances on You Tube which are even more amazing since there was no opportunity for retakes. They are just as memorable as this one. I enjoy all the little tidbits of information you add to your reactions. Have a great day!

The thing that struck me was that he did this all sitting down. Most singers would want to be standing to be sure the air column is entirely unrestricted. But Austin never seems to be straining or working for it. A lot like Barbara Streisand, he always looks like no matter how high or loud he's singing he could crank it up another notch or two if wanted to! Just amazing.

Good point about sitting down which I forgot to mention!! Obviously he wants the informal intimacy of being seated next to Steve. But also you notice his back is straight and posture is excellent.

William, I truly enjoy your reactions for their instruction and passion. You clearly possess a wealth of information. I'm not certain who you intend for your target audience, so my comments may not be valid for you. I’ve enjoyed playing the trumpet and piano since I was young, and watch reaction videos both to learn and enjoy music with others. At times I wish you would take time to explain terms you mention. For instance, at time 4:11 of this video you say, "in the passaggio…” I’ve no idea what that means, but I want to learn. Also, I am curious about your life - a voice coach from Bangkok who films KZbin reaction videos from a small Thai village. Who wouldn’t want to know more about such an exotic life?! I also wanted to note how much I appreciate the caring touch with which you edit these videos. When you interrupt a performance to comment, you gently fade the audio and video, creating a refined production that is pleasant to watch. I am always excited when I find a new reaction video of yours! Sending you love and appreciation from Maryland, USA.

Hi Edwin, have you seen this little boy singing? kzbin.info/www/bejne/h37Rpmh4eLmqpLc It fills us with such joy when kids can demonstrate such emotional and musical sophistication. I suppose by putting the word @passagio in text ok the video, I’m hoping people will look up the term. I would be nervous about explaining technical terms in every video and it could make them clunky and long. I really, really appreciate your comments about editing. Good editing often goes unnoticed but I do take time to fade in and out because it’s bad enough stopping the videos without doing so really abruptly!!! I don’t always in a Thai village. Only sometimes!!! William

I love your channel - the scenery is so gorgeous and the weather is warm (I'm in Canada - we might get a high of -5 C. tomorrow . . .). Austin is from south Georgia and spent his years in college (on a music scholarship) trying to nullify his Georgia accent - when he joined Home Free, they told him to stop trying. To hear that accent uncensored, watch his original "Earn It" on his channel. Your enthusiasm & energy are contagious and your analyses are so insightful.

Yes his singing is better and his notes are more sustained. The original is rather thin when you look at it closely. But the song was nothing before Bobby reinvented it so it will always be the standard.

What an interesting reaction! At the time of writing this song has reached 12 million views, with thousands of views adding every day. Of course it doesn't mean that 12 million people have seen it (or Austin would be well on the way to the stardom he so richly deserves but which has eluded him) but he himself has said that the song's success taught him something, that the public respond to a stripped down no-frills approach. As you said, his sincerity is apparent. Basically he gives himself nowhere to hide, and we respect that. Austin's voice has improved markedly in the last couple of years, to the point where it seems very strange that he is almost unknown. The music industry these days is not about talent, if it ever was, and the hyper-classification of artists means that an artist like Austin who can and does sing anything is overlooked because he can't easily be classified. Who knows what would have happened if he had followed his original training for the musical stage. He's a talented actor with enormous energy and a very appealing manner but doesn't seem inclined to go out looking for that sort of work. Several commenters here have recommended the Home Free version of Unchained Melody, but I must disagree with them. The gently flowing and improvisatory style which is so charming in Austin's version is replaced by heavy harmonisation and a robotic doo-wop rhythm (and a rather peculiar video). One of Home Free's less glorious moments. The new album, So Long Dixie, is miles better, though some of it is still too hokey and country for my taste. Most of it is original material written by Austin and Tim Foust with their regular collaborators. To see Austin in a different mood, check out his Save the World, one of many he has written about his lovely girlfriend.
@nancyholter56462 жыл бұрын
the Home Free video paid tribute to the movie it was originally written for. "A convict in a medium-security prison is torn between his need to finish his sentence and get back to his wife and family, and his desire to escape the confines of prison."
@brendafrazier8112 жыл бұрын
I have to respectfully disagree about Home Free’s version. It’s different than other versions but pays tribute to the era and the movie it was written for. I love it just as much as Austin’s version, it’s just a different interpretation.
@BangkokVoiceCoach2 жыл бұрын
What a tremendously observant critique! I too much prefer Austin’s to the Home Free. This song is such a personal narrative that it doesn’t work as a group endeavour. I don’t mind their video! I thought it was quite a clever tribute to the original movie. But you’re right, the arrangement is rather weighty. Austin’s charm and voice and his ability to seem improvisational is a truly special gift. Do you know there’s another ‘Austin Brown’ singer, related to Michael Jackson? Could this create confusion?
