Is there anything to the claim that Flight Sim programs have historically been poor at using all the cores on a multi-core CPU? That they tend to do 90% of the work on just one core and that this was due to Open GL’s limitations? Finally, that correspondingly, Vulkan and Metal do NOT have this limitation and they do in fact make better use of all the cores? Thanks for your answers!

Bravo! I have a relatively high end Windows nVidia VR based system and this beta has made a huge difference! Flying over Chicago with so many buildings and details and having it liquid smooth never grows old! The only two things I would say is: 1) Release to main branch as soon as you can as some third parties like Orbx have a policy of not updating things unless they are on the main branch. 2) Occasionally close in textures drop away to a lower resolution - obviously the algorithm is doing this to keep a steady frame rate - but I wonder if there is a way of protecting the nearest textures from being downgraded - as it is these where the issue is the most noticeable. Despite that these guys deserve a lot of credit for the hard work and the associated risk in doing it!
@thegreathadoken68084 жыл бұрын
After trying Vulkan I simply can't go back to Open GL now, no matter what it costs. The effect it has had on my framerate has been nothing short of spectacular. It reminds me of the performance boost I got on X-Plane 10 when I upgraded my GTX960 to a GTX1060 back in 2016. That's the kind of framerate boost we're talking about, here. Stunning improvement. Roughly double what it was before. That's with the buildings slider turned up a notch, too. Also, from the way Supnik was talking, I was expecting lots of blurring all over the place in beta, but if anything it's clearer and crisper than it was before. Also, the ground textures in airports don't do that warping, wobbling thing they used to do anymore. I dunno if that's a property of Vulkan, or if Laminar fixed that some time ago and I just didn't notice til now. There is one problem I'm having, I don't know if it's Vulkan related. The next square of terrain isn't loading in fast enough. I can get way over the border between loaded textures and not loaded textures so that below me is only an expanse of blue nothingness. This WAS an issue in OpenGL, I'm just not sure if it's a bigger issue now. It SEEMS to be, but it may just be a placebo. Before it occurred when terrain was very detailed, and/or if I was in a very fast-mover, say going beyond Mach 1. But now, it seems to be happening over detailed terrain just in the Zibo 738, so I dunno. It would be awesome if the Laminar folks could have a look at finding some kind of solution for all that, or if there is one that already exists, maybe someone can let me know. Last night I was flying over Great Britain with the full ORBX scenery going, and it was giving me hell. The framerate was 40fps the whole way, but it just would not load the next tile no matter how long I waited. My system was capable of running it in OpenGL, even if it was a little close to the wire. I have since taken out the ORBX orthoscenery, I'm gonna see if that helps at all later today.

I can't wait for the next wave of graphical upgrades that take advantage of Vulkan. Ortho terrain that's announced sounds amazing, I bet that's a lot of hardwork but with MSFS doing it there's probably a lot of confidence. 10/10 for the Laminar team, you're the leader in world-wide VR flight simulation.

@@simboodamn Ya, basically still using 11.41 settings, targetting 45fps. Airports used (all stock xp11) seems to make a difference. For some reason I get the best/smoothest low flying with a heli at Chicago Meigs. NYC is also pretty good. But KLAS (Las Vegas) is quite a bit poorer (~35fps) for some reason (but still pretty smooth). Probably some areas need to be further optimized I guess. Although the whole RAMVRAM mess is true, for shaders you can also precompile in OpenGL : see glShaderBinary. It's OpenGL 4, but it's still OpenGL. ;)

Do you even need GL4? GL3 has shader programs which you can create and attach/compile shader objects to. Then just call glUseProgram(programId) when you want to use those shaders.

@@Tresla By "precompiling" I meant compile then store in binary in a file for later use. To be honest I don't know if compiling is that bad compared to doing I/O to read the file anyway. But that's what I understood Austin was talking about.
