VS Austin Gipsy fire engine of the Cornwall County Fire Service making its way through some narrow streets of a small Cornish town to show its manoeuvrability in tight places. Views through the front window, side window, the roof and in front of the engine. The engine is also seen driving by the coast and through the countryside.

I joined South Glam Fire Service in 1978. My first station was Roath, Cardiff. I learned to drive in a Land Rover L4P which was late 50s or early 60s. built. The front looked very similar except the suctions sat in a curve around the bonnet. It was like driving a boat there was so much slack in the steering.

It's quite hard to believe that Cornwall wasn't always full of Peugeot 305s and Volkswagon golfs or Ford Focuses, there were genuine NICE cars back in the 50-70s

Funny thing, the Gipsy was made alongside the s1 Land Rovers with both inheriting the world changing 4x4 stuff from the Austin Champ during WW2 which itself pushed America to build their own 4x4 known as the Willy's Jeep which was a capable low cost vehicle but lacked the technology the Champ's, Gipsy and Land Rover's had which was not tipping over at high speed and an incline rating that even the Japanese found difficult matching meaning the British vehicles could move forward at a steeper angle without falling over. To be fair the Jeeps were far more robust than the British vehicles, able to take some serious off road abuse which our ones suffered problems with esp as everything was rushed, materials were compromised even after WW2 and our vehicles suffered accordingly.

Some engineering design aspects you bring up are accurate but chronologically you got things wrong. The Jeep preceded any of the Brit vehicles. Then it was the series 1 LR brought out in 1948, the Champ in the early 50s, and the Gipsy in the early 60s.

One small drawback is that the fires got to be near water ,otherwise your pretty much screwed.

The number of suction hose sections drastically limited its use! The Gipsy had a better chassis and engine than the Landrover, but the steel body panel seams were not sealed, allowing it to rust, just like the Landrover frames, bulkhead and chassis!

Small fire appliances like the land rover and Austin Gipsy were perfect for the smaller units cause they were cheaper than a big Dennis, Bedford or a Leyland fire appliances
