I bought a mint 1990 Rover version of the Metro as a classic about 5 or 6 years ago - it had done only 18,000 on the clock. It was all right when my Dad and I got the engine up to scratch (nailed down valves +) but new tyres were unavailable as BL had changed them to metric and were now long discontinued. Didn't have it long - One day I was driving it in a built up area, applied the footbrake and nothing - no brakes, pedal all the way to the floor and the scenery still passing me by. I stopped using the handbrake but it went straight to the scrapyard that very same day.
@Sennaxm713 жыл бұрын
That is more about your lack of knowledge at the time, and not realising that a classic car is not like a modern car, you can't just get in it and rag it for ever without any consequences, you have to look after them, treat them with care, check things like brakes and brake fluid regularly (monthly at the least), water and oil levels (weekly), it's not hard to do, you just need to know what you're doing, you can easily find out if you don't know, there is usually something about whatever car you're looking to do online somewhere, it wasn't the car's fault that you had no brakes, in reality it was probably something really simple to fix, like a steel brake pipe had corroded or a rubber one had split, a very cheap fix in the motor world to be fair. It's all about how much information you have, my first car back in 1987 could have easily been fixed, but like you, I had no knowledge back then and scrapped a perfectly good Mk1 escort that just need a new differential. How much are they fetching now? Yes, silly money, compared to what I paid for it back then, £120 lol We live and learn (hopefully)
@tollbar54683 жыл бұрын
@@Sennaxm71 Whoa! Let me stop you right there! I have over 40 years experience with classic cars. My 'every day' car is a Triumph Herald estate that my father bought in '65 - I don't own a modern car. I knew exactly what had gone wrong but I sort of fell out with it and couldn't be bothered. I bought it cheap because the vendor couldn't sell it - nobody wanted it. It was one of those purchases you make which seemed fine at the time but then I grew to dislike the thing - it was really too 'modern' for my tastes. In hindsight I should have repaired it but scrapping it was the quickest way to get shot of the thing.
