I bought a mint 1990 Rover version of the Metro as a classic about 5 or 6 years ago - it had done only 18,000 on the clock. It was all right when my Dad and I got the engine up to scratch (nailed down valves +) but new tyres were unavailable as BL had changed them to metric and were now long discontinued. Didn't have it long - One day I was driving it in a built up area, applied the footbrake and nothing - no brakes, pedal all the way to the floor and the scenery still passing me by. I stopped using the handbrake but it went straight to the scrapyard that very same day.
@Sennaxm71
@Sennaxm71 3 жыл бұрын
That is more about your lack of knowledge at the time, and not realising that a classic car is not like a modern car, you can't just get in it and rag it for ever without any consequences, you have to look after them, treat them with care, check things like brakes and brake fluid regularly (monthly at the least), water and oil levels (weekly), it's not hard to do, you just need to know what you're doing, you can easily find out if you don't know, there is usually something about whatever car you're looking to do online somewhere, it wasn't the car's fault that you had no brakes, in reality it was probably something really simple to fix, like a steel brake pipe had corroded or a rubber one had split, a very cheap fix in the motor world to be fair. It's all about how much information you have, my first car back in 1987 could have easily been fixed, but like you, I had no knowledge back then and scrapped a perfectly good Mk1 escort that just need a new differential. How much are they fetching now? Yes, silly money, compared to what I paid for it back then, £120 lol We live and learn (hopefully)

@@Sennaxm71 Whoa! Let me stop you right there! I have over 40 years experience with classic cars. My 'every day' car is a Triumph Herald estate that my father bought in '65 - I don't own a modern car. I knew exactly what had gone wrong but I sort of fell out with it and couldn't be bothered. I bought it cheap because the vendor couldn't sell it - nobody wanted it. It was one of those purchases you make which seemed fine at the time but then I grew to dislike the thing - it was really too 'modern' for my tastes. In hindsight I should have repaired it but scrapping it was the quickest way to get shot of the thing.

Back when there were still quite a few Metros around some friends of mine made me aware of a 'legend', that if you were going along a three lane carriageway and there was something doing 30mph in the middle lane and holding everyone else up, it would always be... someone driving a Mini Metro. The more I observed, the more I came to realise that it was actually true.

First saw this ad as part of the 1988 ITV Telethon charity fund raising event that was presented by Michael Aspel for some 27 hours. Still remember the time the ad went out, 10.40 a.m. 30.05.1988, following the Telethon special editions of Derek Batey's quiz "Mr. & Mrs." featuring the late Bill Tarmey & the late Liz Dawn better known as the Duckworths from Corrie, and the Corrie Challenge quiz presented by Richard Madeley from the old Snug in the Rovers' Return, the team captains were Julie Goodyear (Bet Lynch) and William Roache (Ken Barlow).

@Sennaxm71
@Sennaxm71 3 жыл бұрын
The Skoda wasn't a bad car, just made out of piss thin steel, so didn't suit British weather, or our gritted roads, but in Rallying it wasn't known as a joke, it won it's class for at least 13 years in a row, almost unheard of back then.

RIP Murray Walker , also the 1 litre Metro was very nippy for its time , i learnt to drive in one with a manual choke in the early 00s and to verify the speed it would do my friend Matt in his Corsa GSI 1.6 followed behind me on a clear motorway it hit 110mph and no head gasket failure thank god , sadly one day the poor cars fuel gauge stopped working and i got stuck in the middle of nowhere with no breakdown cover, the car was towed by the police who wanted £300 to get it back so had to tell them to send it to police auction , anyway they were good cars , just a shame Rover stopped selling the original Mini too as that would have saved the company, the Maestro was an awful car my dad had one and the wheel literally fell off very dangerous.

Many many moons ago I remember being stuck in the countryside, loads of snow overnight and we needed food! Several cars out back. Volvo, yes, Swedish, first choice out the lot, but no, pathetic. Can't remember all the cars we had but the astramax didn't fair well either. Metro City was naturally last choice. It actually moved! (which is why I'm alive today) By now we were rooting for it so maybe that had a Uri Geller effect. Got us to the supermarket and back, no hassle. Don't knock 'em. Especially when my current city car, the VW Up!, is so pathetic it's trapped in around 4inches of snow, on the flat. Progress huh.

Nasty crapboxes those cars were. Yes the Metro was innovative but build quality failed it and many were destroyed/stolen by chavs.

Oh cringe...... I used to travel to the UK and use my mums Metro for touring, what a heap of crap. Woeful design, hideous interior finish, reverse gear frequently vanished from the gearbox and brakes that felt like treading on marshmallows in gum boots. My Toyota back in Australia felt like a Swiss watch by comparison.

Awful cars! Awful commentator! He used to ruin F1 with his awful commentary. James Hunt was great, and always correcting him. When F1 went to Idiot TV(ITV), I switched off, as I had the option of European satellite TV(RTL, RAI, etc) which was a lot better, and didn't have ad breaks at wrong time!!!
