Make sure you check out the west Austin area next time. Drive through the Hill Country and visit places like Hamilton Pool, the Oasis Restaurant on Lake Travis. Pretty scenery and change of pace to the flatness of DFW.

I originally planned to relocate to Austin but when I visited and saw the traffic, crowds there I made up my mind to go to Dallas instead. Not that traffic is any better there but it seemed more career opportunities in Dallas versus Austin. The homelessness is pretty bad in philly but I didn’t realize it’s that way in Austin too. It’s a global epidemic that needs to be addressed not overlooked. Thanks for bringing this subject to the forefront. Btw I loved my experience in Austin, lots to do and a great city for vegan foodies!

I live in Austin and I lived in Dallas for a really long time as well. I think you are extremely accurate in your assessments of both cities. You should spend some more time in Austin, particularly if you are into the music scene. Both cities have their ugly sides, but both are much nicer than the stereotypes would indicate. I lived in East Dallas (in the Munger Place area) and I loved the combination of urban and small town atmospheres, friendly neighborhood in the shadow of downtown. Austin is wrestling with homelessness, trying to balance compassion with urban reality, and trying to treat these people as humans with problems. In doing so, it becomes a city with a reputation as friendly to the homeless and attracts them from all over, a problem Austin has in common with Seattle and some other more liberal places. But all in all, it is a GREAT place to live.

traffic is horrible in austin because the highway system has yet to keep up with the population growth. People have been hyping up austin for awhile so much so that many people want to and many end up moving there. This has created a backlash-as mentioned with the traffic, and now people are even developing an attitude against people from other states that have moved there. Maybe people should have avoided hyping up the city so much, because that could have kept so many people from moving there. And yes, there is alot of homeless people in austin. I used to do community work at the downtown shelter and made lots of friends there. I'm still convinced that austin is a deeply racist city.

Just build trains and add bus routes like the real city you are now. Portland and Seattle went through the same thing. So did NYC and Chicago 125 years ago. This is just how it is..growing pains. But it gets better. Austin just needs to build a rapid transit train line. 2 lines Criss crossing the city and one big circle line. Telling people to not move and wanting your city to be small. Is a loser mentality. You big league now. Act like it.

So glad you are enjoying my home state-it's absolutely booming these days (now more than ever); I miss it. I made the move to Denver a year ago but I was in Austin for 10 years, and before that spent most of high school and college in the Dallas area. Austin was a good time, especially if you are fresh out of college. I'm 40 now so I'm too old and my liver is too tired to enjoy Austin as one should haha. It does have a hella cool vibe but it's a little more "full of itself" now then when I first moved there in 2007. If you meet an original Austinite that was born and raised there, you have a friend for life. They are truly genuine, albeit quirky, people. You cannot beat a boat/party barge party on Lake Travis in the summertime. BBQ places galore. And some badass Tex-Mex (Polvo's on S. First St, and Amaya's Taco Village off of 35 and Koenig/2222 (and that's assuming they haven't been torn down for condos). The string of bars on North Loop Blvd (not too crowded, not too pretentious-again, assuming tney haven't been torn down for condos yet). The Barton Springs greenbelt and Bull Creek greenbelts are heaven, especially if there has been a wet Spring, and all of the creeks are full. Austin truly is a great place with personality with a great vibe, but unfortunately the secret has been out for awhile, so traffic sucks and it's expensive because everyone is moving there. As fun as it is you then will begin to realize that the museum scene is pretty bad, it's relatively not diverse, and that traffic everywhere at all times of the day is truly exhausting. Again, it's a great "midsize" city with lots of personality-it makes places like Denver, where I currently live, seem stale and boring. I left Austin for a short stint in Houston, which is as underrated as Austin is overrated. Houston is humid AF but its got Texas-sized everything, a population more diverse than NYC, great, CHEAP food, world class Museum district, and a distinct Texan/International vibe. I strongly suggest you check it out. The people there are less pretentious than they are in Dallas. Just don't go there July-October, or you will sweat your arse off. As a native Texan, my favorite cities in the state are Houston, Austin, San Antonio, then Dallas.

As a music producer who has been involved in hiphop for over 20 years, I would say that Austin does have an excellent music scene but hiphop is the least promoted and visible. Not intentionally but the culture here just harbors more of the country, rock, alternative and punk scene. I produced on an independent label in Dallas in 2000-2001 and did hip hop shows in a district of downtown called Deep Ellum. I'd say the hiphop scene here is bigger than Austin and to be honest- Houston may have been king of hiphop in texas since the beginning, but Dallas will surpass them. The guy I worked with back in 2000 is now a Emmy nominated and Grammy winning sound engineer. J.Rhodes is another Grammy winning cat from Dallas as a producer. The D.OC. from NWA was from Dallas and he would have been by far the best emcee in the group had he not been in that accident. He actually wrote most of NWAs early stuff. Eryka Baidu is from here. Dallas is the place or is becoming the place. Cant go wrong in Houston either. Many greats have come out of there too. But Dallas is on the rise. Houston seems to be fading. Austin isnt bad either but more opportunities in the other 2.

They're talking mainly about the politics. These so called "people" are leaving their "liberal" dumps and moving to "non Liberal" states but trying to bring the same ideolgy and politics that made them leave the place they came from. If you come and want to adapt to the culture and lifestyle of a new place its cool but don't try to change it to the place u left. I think that's what they're mainly getting at.

Anyone with your attitude is welcome to this state. Austin is great to visit but way too expensive to live there. Hill Country is great if you like freezing cold rivers. Lockhart is the BBQ capital of Texas with more than one bbq place. Know what you mean about the homeless. Maybe they come to the south because there's less cold weather to deal with. I live in Houston and unfortunately lots of homeless here and some on the island, I suppose they mostly need mental health services but I guess that's the tricky part; they have to want to get help. I see lots of charitable organizations and businesses feeding everyone which is spectacular but it's like you say about the people you saw in the streets; you can see the hopelessness in their eyes and what can you do? Sure would like to see the rest of the nation follow the Texas model (and Buc ee's model of course!)
