The director is trying to save the movie, he says he got surprised that critics from Mexico started coming off late, the reality is that Mexico was the last country to be shown to, the people in the industry knew perfectly well what they were doing and they hoped the backlash wasn't that strong so that they could get away with it.

This "Emilia Perez" disaster is truly something to behold. I've never seen a film go from industry darling to absolutely radioactive so quickly. I can't even think of another film of this equivalence. Mexican here... I think foreigners, and especially americans, haven't seen this from the perspective of us mexicans, so imagine this movie being set in the context of a major tragedy in the US (9/11, Columbine...): with non american actors speaking english in an accent different than anerican one (say british, indians, south africans), poor vocal quality (since it is a musical), without a proper investigation of the events, poorly written songs and most importantly touching the topic in a disrespectful manner...

I think social media plays a big part. In the past, anything that actors and directors did and said was very carefully controlled by the studios so that only the right kind of messaging came out. And the worst part is that none of this had to happen. If the nominations were based on cinematic achievements and by implication Emilia Pérez didn't get nominated, nobody would've cared about Karla Sofia Gascon, nobody would have cared about the director, and everyone would've forgot about the movie's existence by now. I watched the movie because so many people talked about it. I hated it. I'm a straight, white, European woman so not the subject matter expert in the language problems, the portrait of Mexico, or the trans community. But I'm a fan of good movies, so here are my problems that made me marking this movie with very low scores on Imdb and RT: the message that due to sex change operation a person's previous crimes just disappear, is ridiculous. EP digged out the bodies that were in there because of him while being a cartel leader, and this makes her a saint and people kiss her hand like a maffia boss, is just mindblowing. She used the money he had by criminal activities, she discovered crimes he did before and she's portrayed as a saint in the second half is nonsense.

In a movie, suspension of disbelief is a finite resource. Most people are willing to give you a certain amount of suspension of disbelief if you establish the new rules of how things work early enough on. For example people are willing to accept that people randomly break out in song in a musical, or that a little plastic surgery makes someone COMPLETELY unrecognizable even by their closest family. But if you continue to add things to that then you risk the suspension being broken. Also if they find the movie bad or boring, they will pick at that suspension of disbelief until it breaks.
