I remember those lovely headlight switches. The first 4 vehicles I had were fords in the range of 77-81. I scratched my hands up quite a bit pulling the knobs off to change dash lights and do other repairs.

Broncos use double cardans so they can rotate the diff up and not have issues with mismatched angles.They are normally in the rear on Broncos, and the front on F250/F350. The two ujoints in the cardan cancel each other out, allowing the other end to be around 0-1 degree or inline with the pinion.

Enjoying your channel This build so far is awesome and that motor sounds great. I've owned many fords in my day and I miss them. I've got a tacoma trd sport now that has served me well I didn't get a full size truck cause my wife is just a short girl and she wanted to use it as well. But I must say I miss the full size truck. Especially the old F Series. They were good trucks in there day. I don't know about the newer ones other than their way out of my price range.

Im pretty sure my dads 78 bronco has the double joints front and rear, I could be wrong there tho too, its been years since ive been under it
@AustinCoulson4 жыл бұрын
That would make sense as the fronts are very similar to the F250 and the rear is much shorter

I had a couple 88 Rangers with that crappy headlight switch. What a lovely piece of over engineered crap that was. Random note, my 96 grand cherokee also has a double cardigan joint on the front shaft on the t-case side, then a CV on the axle end. Solid front axle with cv's instead of u-joints. Car companies do weird things.. Thanks for the update video. This truck is going to be waaaayy better than new when you're done! I quite enjoy your attention to detail on so many little things, you're clearly enjoying what you do. Hope all is well with the move to TN and you're getting settled in!

In Australia our 70's and early 80"s fords all used that same headlight switch too! You have to put it in the on position to press the release button..... I have a small collection of them now as I know everyone breaks them! LOL
@AustinCoulson4 жыл бұрын
You are having better luck than me. I usually have the knob pull off, then I can get better access to the button, then I can give the shaft the ole' wiggle and it pops out.

I like how Ford put the blower motor inside the cab with it sticking out into the engine bay. Unlike Chevy who put it in the engine bay and can be changed without taking half the truck apart.

Refresh my memory. Why didn't you keep the OEM HVAC? Needed room in the engine bay?
@kstricl4 жыл бұрын
The factory 70's system sucks. Needs lots of vacuum hoses, and cables. The Vintage Air is more efficient and the controls are fully electronic, so much easier to place and route.
@ShainAndrews4 жыл бұрын
@@kstricl I don't remember any vacuum lines on that unit. All cable operated. I remember them working pretty well too, until it gets plugged up with debris... which raises another question. Does the Vintage Air provide outside air, or is it a permanent recycle? And now another question how do you integrate it with the OEM controls?
@AustinCoulson4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question I didn't really address. You are correct there were no vac lines for the climate control on that model. I went with the Vintage air kit because it is more efficient and designed to work together. I have done R12 to R134a conversions in the past and I don't prefer them to the VA Gen IV setup.

That style of push button release headlight switch goes back to at least 1960 on the Falcons, Fairlanes, Mustangs, etc. One you learn the secret handshake, they are pretty easy. Most guys try to push the button, then pull the shaft out of the switch. Wrong. Pull the shaft out to headlight on position, then push the button, then pull it out the rest of the way.
@AustinCoulson4 жыл бұрын
I just came across a older ford here in Tenn that I had to pull the switch on and it worked just as intended. I wonder if the AZ heat has anything to do with all the problems I had with them
@mattfarahsmillionmilelexus4 жыл бұрын
@@AustinCoulson It's all metal, so probably not. But one method or the other will surely work.

I love this build! I have a question well not for me but foranother channel I follow . Motion Raceworks. They are on the Rocky Mountain Raceweek 2.0 and they are racing a couple cars but one is a stock 2000s grand marquis and they are close to getting it to 12 seconds in the quarter. They have ran into a limit. 99mph speed limit in the computer. Do you know a way to get around this? If you do head over to their KZbin channel and give them some info. I thought maybe with all your crown vic experience you might knoe a trick Thanks man and keep up the good work
@AustinCoulson4 жыл бұрын
They can swap to a PI computer. Only change would need to be also swapping the airbox to a PI or Marauder. Other benefit would be an 11hp increase over the non-PI intake setup. I'll check out their channel

As a mechanic with a half century of experience. The headlight switch you complained about was universal gm Mopar and even Japanese cars used them . As far as STUPID engineering ford is right up there in ass hole shit $2000+ to replace a water pump on focus and the head gaskets designed to fail at 100,000 miles that actually lasted 60-70 thousand miles are a couple Biggie's
@AustinCoulson4 жыл бұрын
Is that one of those water pumps that is driven by the timing belt? For some reason, I never had the same issue with the GM or Japanese switch knobs, those seem to pop off just fine. The Ford ones always fight me
@timerickson70564 жыл бұрын
@@AustinCoulson yes it is . Also gm Chrysler and Japanese cars used the same switch it was because they had dash dimer switch integrated . Japanese manufacturers went to light switches integrated into the signal light years before the big 3 . But I have cussed them all. I THINK the switches were cost saving. So all. Manufactures used them until Japan started taking over. Like torx screws gave the manufacturers free torx screws and tooling . Because they knew they'd be selling a new set of torx bits to every mechanic.
