I feel bad for the kid for one main reason. Nothing he does past here is likely to compete with his debut. His shooting percentage WILL correct itself, his points per game will correct itself, and when it does the media is going to eat him up. Let's say he doesn't score for the next 3 games, then when he scores once, then goes another three games without a goal. They're going to be asking about what he's doing wrong and breaking it down, even though he'll still have an average of 5 goals in 7 games, over 60 goals in a season. He's far more likely to score maybe 20-30 goals than he is 60, this was just an example. I'd love to hear about your opinion on this, I don't think the media will eat him alive but it'll definitely take a toll on him, IMO.

Nah I disagree with you here. Babcock and Lou will both make sure the media doesn't get to this kid. Go back to the Babcock signing press conference interview with Shanny and him, Babcock said something about making Toronto a safe place for players in regards to the media. Also the media was very quiet last year in Toronto. Babcock is just a very smart guy when it comes to the media and he won't let this stuff happen same with Lou. Also obviously Auston won't score 4 goals a night every game or get a point a night every game but I still see him getting 20 plus goals and 55 maybe 60 to 65 points to end the season. The media won't affect this kid. The Kid is also very well spoken and mature for his age.

toronto media isnt allowed to roam free anymore since lou came into town. if you look, the leafs have a representative stand beside mathews in interviews to keep the media in check, lou doesnt tolerate the BS the media put phaneuf and kessel through. if you watch the post game interview the rep is standing on austins right and one of the media guys tried to be funny and asked mathews if the leafs have "discussed the parade route after you win the stanley cup"...and then another chimed in asking if his statue was in the works. then in the video you could see the representative immediately go "ok enough guys" and he shut down the interview after that as mathews gets in a final "its just one game guys" haha the wild animal that is the toronto media has been tamed, that was a big reason for bringing lou in to town. the kids are in good hands now and dont have to worry about being harassed by the media

It was an entertaining game for sure. I´ve never really paid much attention to the leafs, there have always been more interesting teams to follow for me though you can tell, this season, the Leafs are different. No idea how many points they will get, but they are fun to watch, that´s for sure. Really really liked Nylanders game. I think his most impressive play was the foreplay to Matthews first goal, deking the shit out of the defender and throwing a difficult pass right to matthews in the middle, which eventually led to the goal. Also like how he looks on the pp, reminds me a lot of Bäckström.

Matthews is pretty much a lock for the Calder. To set an NHL record on his first night. Also if you look at past winners like Mackinnon and Landeskog, they won it with goal totals of low 20's. Matthews is on pace for 328 lol

Edmonton won 7-4 yea McDavid had 2 but the scoring came from other players Maroon Pitlick Kassian and Ebbs. If Toronto is going to want to win they need scoring from others as well.
