Being a Leafs fan from Ottawa, i was at the game when Matthews made his NHL debut and scored 4 goals. I was 12 years old, so I wasn’t as invested in hockey as I am now, and I didn’t really appreciate what I was witnessing at the time. I was just upset we lost that game, but as I got older and more knowledgeable about hockey, now looking back on that moment and being apart of that history is surreal. Love Matthews, such a humble and down to earth guy that’s been able to excel despite having a ton of pressure on his shoulders playing in the largest market in the league. Highest paid NHLer makes less than some 2nd and 3rd stringers in the NFL, NBA n MLB. That plays a big part in why more of them remain humble. An NFL QB probably makes more in 1 game than the minimum salary for a year in the NHL.
@Grayto Жыл бұрын
The average salary of both leagues seems to be about 3 million a year. I would probably say there are more 2nd and 3rd strings in the NFL, but they dont get paid that much, while the higher end NFL players get substantially more than their elite NHL counterparts. Also, the endorsment and advertisments contracts for elite NFL players likely eclipses those of the NHL.
@Qmocean Жыл бұрын
@Grayto not many of the average salary guys are going to be entitled. Those guys are probably more like hockey players than their much higher paid peers, because they're the guys tgat are most likely to ignore injury for fear of losing their jobs. The superstars in hockey usually remain humble. Listen to the highest paid guys in hockey talk. McDavid, Matthews, McKinnon, etc. They're all very humble. Some of that is due to the fact that if you combined all 3 of their salaries together, they wouldn't even crack the top 5 nfl contract values. Lamar makes $1M less this season than the top 7 NHL salaries this season.
@Grayto Жыл бұрын
I don't undertsand your point. Those are the average salaries from each league from what i can find. I agree that the higher end players don't make as much, but I believe the statistics indicate that the average player in NHL is better off. I also think injuries are a worse concern in the NFL, and the time in the league is shorter (3.3 years) vs the NHL (4.5). The numbers don't bear our that the NHL is poverty league compared to the glamorous NFL league. Im sure there is desperation for some lower-end players in both leagues.@@Qmocean
@Qmocean Жыл бұрын
@Grayto who said anything about them being poverty? My point is that there aren't anywhere near as many high paid athletes, and the high paid athletes aren't making that much more than everyone else. The highest paid NHLer is $12.6M, in the NFL it's $80M. Both have similar minimums, kinda. The NHLs minimum is the same for everyone. NFL it climbs depending how many years they have played. That massive discrepancy is what leads to more guys having little to no humility. The NHL tends to have way less arrogant athletes than their higher paid counterparts. The amount of guaranteed money leads to more of them completely changing how they play. They get the bag and then shit the bed.
@Qmocean Жыл бұрын
@Grayto in short. NHLers remain more humble because their superstars only make $12M not $40M-80M.

@Pikabo0 Жыл бұрын
They are, but it's also true that the sport is largely played by well off white guys, which kinda sucks tbh. Toronto is the most diverse city on the planet, the crowds outside the arena during playoff games are from fucking everywhere, but you wouldn't really know it from the team. It's why a lot of kids from Muslim backgrounds (myself included) fell in love with Kadri so deeply; he was the first person who looked like us playing for our team. Papi's an inspiration for latino kids everywhere, i know a few people who started cheering for the wild and stars because Dumba and Jason Robertson are fillipino, hope his little brother can do the same for the blue and white. I love that the team's began to embrace it more and more in recent years, doesn't matter where you're from, you bleed blue and white.
