Expect nothing from Scomo. Keep the pressure up and an elected Albanese Govt may do something.

Tesla is currently looking for the locations for their next set of factories. India has been messing them around and Germany is an excellent example of bureaucratic drag gone mad. A friendly Government and a country rich in resources and skilled labour would be a huge attractant. Australia alone could provide a huge market for not just cars but also the Semi & Megapacks with the remainder being exported. Given Tesla's local purchasing policy, this would not only be a massive boost to local technology but also a fulcrum to allow the country to rapidly morph to a renewables based economy.

We have everything we need to be a world leader in, "...(insert industry type here)...". The only thing missing is the political will to do it. Bring on the May election! BTW, there are some exceptions, e.g. military weapons manufacture, gas power plants, carbon capture and storage, and anything not renewable energy related!

Yeah, this will probably be a repeat of the $100 Billion solar panel market give-away.

I suggest you fact check claims of the auto industry "still being there". The plants were decommissioned and equipment auctioned off. Supporting industries have moved on or closed down. The total domestic automotive market is too small and the range of vehicles too broad to support local manufacture. Nice thought, but not going to happen.

Goodness, who's talking about the domestic market? The countries with successful car industries are the ones that export most of the cars they make. And we still have the design expertise here. For now.

@@ragadolls I can't name a country which relies on exports. Perhaps you could name such a place and the car company/ies that operate in that mode.

soooooo dumb, if we can't make ICE cars why would we be able to make electric cars? Australians don't like working hard at low wages, thats the sad truth behind why we don't have a competitive manufacturing industry. If you want manufacturing you need less union influence and lower living standards to be able to compete.....and no one in Australia wants that. People are more happy to take government handouts than work hard. In addition to this both political parties have destroyed our cheap energy sector with their net zero virtue signalling. We're cursed by politicians with high wages, high energy costs and labour will only make this worse. Any talk about electric car manufacturing only reflects a clear lack of intellectual capacity.
