Australia: Great Barrier Reef Struggles to Survive Amid Mass Bleaching | Firstpost America
The world-famous Great Barrier Reef in Australia has been hit by one of the most severe mass bleaching events on record. The reefs are home to a stunning array of biodiversity, including more than 600 types of coral and 1,625 fish species. According to the Australian government authorities, aerial surveys conducted by scientists show about 73 per cent of the reefs spanning the Great Barrier Reef have bleached. This has left scientists concerned, who believe that rising ocean temperatures are threatening the corals' survival. Australia's worries come days after the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the coral reefs across the world are battling the fourth mass bleaching event.
