About Bukele, seems like the stream viewer phrased their explanation of him a bit poorly. The 2% of the population in prisons is almost entirely gang members. The homicide rate in the country fell by 50 percent his first year in office and has since dropped to 1.9 people per 100k (down from *38* when he was elected). Some of the actions he takes are *very* authoritarian, and he has jokingly referred to himself as the "coolest dictator". While his methods definitely spark concern, he has been incredibly successfully in making the country far safer for its citizens. It's an interesting situation, for sure. Wendover Productions did a video on him and the country about a year ago, informative and the comments from Salvadorans definitely help put all of it in perspective.

As a Western I'd be fine about suspending the constitution and losing some political freedoms if it means me and other civilians can live free from gang extortion, rape and murder. Better to live in a dictatorship than anarchy. Same as Russia in the 90s or Syria

The controversy is due to those people being incarcerated purely on the basis of being a "potential" gang member meaning that many are innocent people.

Just wanted to drop my opinion on the where to live conversation. I was born and raised in ontario and went to school there. Moved to BC for 2.5 years with my friends and now have moved to Calgary in the last 6 months. I'm currently 26 but feel like I have a unique POV for the discussion. Ontario (Toronto): Cold + Expensive + Busy, upside is the stuff to do with you having family, friends, connections, house and all that. BC (Vancouver): Rainy/Warm + Expensive, really pretty outdoors and doesn't have a cold winter, to substitute that you do get lots of rain during the winter (in lieu of snow) Alberta (Calgary): Sunny + Cheaper, smaller city than toronto/vancouver that still has big city vibes (1.8mil population). I personally think this is great as you still get all the big amenities but the traffic & real estate don't make you want to scratch your eyeballs out. Unique factors here I've noticed is that its sunny 90% of the time, winter is half cold/snowy like ontario or just warm & sunny due to the Chinooks. Random downside is that the city is VERY dry, cracked hands, etc is the norm for people I've seen. I think inside of Canada these three cities are probably your best bet. Toronto for the home town connections, Vancouver for the outdoors and mild weather, Calgary for the cheaper smaller big city vibe and lots of sun. Outside of canada yea there is lots of optios inside the states that I am not well versed in. I am curious what your take is on this as the years go on, I'm debating myself where I want to go if Calgary doesn't end up being the long term decision to raise a family.
