Australia's largest cactus garden. Cactus Country

Cactus Country is Australia's largest cactus garden located in Strathmerton Victoria. Open to the public, it is a fantastic place to visit any time of the year. These photos were taken in mid May 2013 when I called in there with my family for a bit of a leg stretch on our way through. As you can see the place looks great no matter what time of the year you visit and, as you enter you feel as if you are entering another land.
With a very extensive cactus garden, there is also a garden dedicated to African succulents, an indoor garden full of exotic succulents, a sales house full of many collectable cacti and succulent plants and also a cafe serving up Cactus Country's famous cactus cake.
A great place for a tourist destination and a must see for any plant enthusiast.

I just sifted some soil from cactus I will plant in a 10 gallon fish tank. Just wondering, should it be 10%, 20% or ?% sand? Also the soil presently has lots of PINE NEEDLES, will this be a problem?

LuckyGuu The most important aspect of your mix will be its ability to drain well. Everyone has their own preferred mix but in all successful cactus mixes will have good drainage.

+LuckyGuu To be honest, the healthiest cacti I have are growing in rich, non-sandy soil but with GOOD DRAINAGE.

Zane Smith Thanks for the info. I bought a bag of Cactus Mix soil? What a scam! In nature, the soil you find cactus growing is very hard dirt, which may or might not contain sand. Any thoughts?

+LuckyGuu Where are you growing your cactus? Are you able to grow outdoors in your climate? Northern California here. Everything's outside. I'm in Arizona right now and the soil here is junk. How cactus grow here, I don't know. It doesn't drain well either. But the best way to keep cactus healthy in captivity is good draining, rich soil. That cactus mix from home depot and stuff is good, but the bags are SMALL and expensive! I'd rather spend my money on more cactus! lol. The richer the soil, the healther the cactus. My opinion!
