In all fairness, he hasn't done it on his own. The coalition's adoption of net zero is equally deluded. And has significantly contributed to federal Labor's last election victory. After all, why vote a coalition that, only the previous election, were certain net zero WAS insanity and economic suicide?

It was breakdowns at coal plants that caused the problems in NSW last week. 4 out of 12 generators offline including Eraring, for which Origin had been paid millions to avoid this very situation.

I sat for a trainee operator position interview at Darling Downs Combined Cycle Power Station in 2008 . The 3 senior operations people doing the interview all said the future was nuclear power. These were people who had been in the industry for 20 or so years then . They were adamant Australia needs nuclear plants .

The world has changed since 2008. The extra safety measures and precautions introduced as a result of Fukishima have blown out the costs of nuclear production. Every western nuclear project started in the last 20 years (VC Summer, Vogtle, Hinkley C, Flamanville, Olkiluoto) has run way over time and budget

The right decision would be to build modern new coal fired power stations, in conjunction with new gas fired plants. And yes, it would be wise to start building a nuclear power industry as well. Inevitably that is what we'll likely be forced to do when the 85% renewables BS finally collapses in a heap as was always going to happen.
@tassied12
@tassied12 14 сағат бұрын
No bank will invest in a new coal plant in Australia due to the risk of it becoming a stranded asset. Daytime demand from the grid is falling with an increase in the frequency of negative wholesale prices. The operators of Bayswater have been testing running the generators in two-shift mode where they shut down completely during the day to avoid losing money.

The reality is there was just ONE new reactor construction start last year outside China and only TWO so far this year. (IAEA reactor database) Nuclear's share of global power production is half what it was 25 years ago. The reality is that global nuclear capacity went backwards last year, with new capacity coming online not even keeping up with closures

Just for the record Whitlam visited China before Nixon. And Australia’s chance at cheap reliable energy was lost when the Liberal Party made sure Rex Connor’s vision of Australian industry and homes powered by cheap Australian owned gas, never saw the light of day. And the LNP have contributed more than their fair share of monumental blunders since.

The biggest setback to Australia's energy was caused by Labor when Julia Gillard as Prim Minister, despite all expert advice to the contrary, failed to implement a domestic gas reservation for east coat gas exports.

False, it was Kevin Rudd's Energy Minister Martin Ferguson who renegotiated the gas contracts so foreign gas companies do not have to pay any royalties on over 50% of our gas that they sell, and the rate they did pay was reduced. 2 weeks after Abbott flogged Rudd Ferguson lost his seat, he got a million dollar job with British gas.
