My favourite Journeys Beyond passenger service. Didn't recognise the crew on this trip. Normally, Nitin is the SOM on "The Overland". Service should be expanded to 6-days a week.

I am from SA and took the Overland when I was a kid a couple of times, Back then it was a sleeper service which I think was far better as a bulk of the trip is through regional SA and the Wimmera which is almost the same flat farmland so you could just sleep through most of the trip. Also the service was more frequent and its days were not odd. Sadly it is privatised, sleeper service gone and has odd days and is only twice a week. I honestly think it being changed from a proper intercity rail service to a "tourist experience" has hindered it badly and provides less alternative to Bus or Flying. Also the next main issue is that it uses a freight train engine and the carriages from from the 1950s so it goes horribly slow on the areas of track where it could easily go above 100 but the Overland averages 90km so this pushes out the time of the Journey. With newer rolling stock making it faster and better days so many more people will use the service. Also the Keswick terminal in Adelaide is such a useless disconnected no mans land which has no PT connections compared that to Southern Cross in Melbourne. With all that complaining lol your video was pretty good.

We went on the sleeper service in early 1997 Melb- Adel, although we just snoozed in our seats, rather than paying extra for beds. We were with a bunch of choristers going to a choir festival in Perth so we took the “Freedom Train” all the way across to Perth. 😁 There were about 50 of us in the group that left from Adelaide.

FYI Stawell pronounced like "Store well" and Wimmera is "Wim er ah". But still sounds exactly how you said it did when said all at once

As a minibus driver, I would often head to Parklands Station (fancy name for Keswick) to transfer people to the city. So often I would have bewildered train passengers approach and ask what was going on. They had been told the train went to Adelaide Railway Station and all they had to do was walk across the road to their hotel. I often saw people walking along the access road, not realizing it would take them about half an hour to get to the city. Adelaide is lovely, its government (state and local) are morons.

That is what is so useless about Keswick, with some dual gauge tracks and signalling the Overland could easily make it into ARS fine as the train is not the insane lengths of The Ghan and Indian Pacific. Also with it being in the central station daily commuters would see it and realise the Overland exists.

Great video Josh. The fact that you can stretch your legs rather than sitting the whole way on a Bus makes this a good option without all the hassle of flying and waiting in the Airport. City center to City center on one form of transport.

I wonder if on Thursdays it’s an hour earlier because of freight trains passing and having to wait for the free single track? I haven’t taken the Overland for years but looking at the timetable on the website that’s what my thoughts are

Looks like a lovely trip, sadly after my recent XPT experience, that is squished due to my height...probably not an issue here, and getting a sore bum, and thus fidgety, I feel this may not be for me. A shame really. I remember when those carriages were used on the Indian Pacific, which I imagine would be a challenging trip in those seats.

Journey Beyond Call-centre staff are telling me I must check in my guitar and can't take it on the train with me (opposite to XPT Syd > Mel). From your experience do you think Journey Beyond staff at boarding and on the train might be a bit more flexible about this? - in multiple Overland KZbin videos I see all sorts of stuff in train car with passenger & overhead lockers are very under utilised. Not expecting guarantees but just your opinion please.
