I wonder why the camera angle behind the batsman was the default one at this time. Can hardly see anything compared to the modern day one from behind the bowler's arm.

There used to be only one camera instead of two at both ends. Thats why there used to be one ober shown from behind the Bateman and one with the normal view we have today. Most broadcasting innovations took place when cricket got money in the 90's. Dont forget till 1992 or so, bcci used to pay money from their own pockets to broadcast these matches.
