I'm a 65 year old Aussie and I disagree with the generation comparisons. I have lived and worked with Kiwis my entire life (even slept with a couple in my teens). Attitudes and social mores have not really deviated at all. This is how I see it... Kiwis and Aussies are like siblings, we will fight like cats and dogs, snarl and bite each other but if any other nationality tries to join in then it's "fuck you mate, this is our blue so piss off". In true ANZAC spirit we will fight to the death for our brothers and sisters and nobody else is welcome. Except at Bledisloe time!

That was interesting. When interviewed both the Aussies and kiwis often said the kiwis are nicer, kinder and more chilled. But yet, many Australians giving praise to the Kiwis and not the other way around. Looks like the Aussies are pretty kind, chilled and not so arrogant after all. 😂 I do love the fun banter between our countries. Its a big sign of endearment in our countries. It shows how much, after a bit of fun we really do respect each other.

That’s one interpretation; the other is that in fact Kiwis are more chilled out and friendlier. One really off-putting thing that visitors notice is that in Australia there’s lots of rivalry between the states, with VIC and NSW constantly bickering about who’s better. It can be quite nasty and petty at times.

Kiwi here from West Auckland :) i believe flat whites and pavlovas are ours and my dad said he went to highschool with Russell Crowe and it sounds like Australia can have him lol.also a cone refers to weed Biggest differences 1. Treaty - we have a treaty with our tangata whenua / indigenous people and in general i believe we respect and treat them much better 2. Attitude - we tend to be more reserved, chill but also have a "tall poppy syndome" where we get told not to show off. Aussies can be more bold and upfront. 3.accent. nz - fush and chups aus- feesh and cheeps 4. Sports. Nz - strong in rugby aus- better in cricket and rugby league 5. Landscape Theyre like our siblings -- we might fight it out but whenever theres trouble we help eachother out Also hope your itinerary included our black sand beaches :)

The real difference between Aussies and Kiwis: If you call an Aussie a Kiwi they laugh and say "nah mate, I'm Aussie". If you call a Kiwi an Aussie, they get all snarky and spend 1 hour telling your about the all blacks, pavlova, and how much nicer NZers are than Aussies. It's a fail safe test, I promise.

I'm an Aussie. Apart from the differences in Aussie and Kiwi accents, I think Kiwis are quieter and more socially progressive. We tend to be louder, blunt and less socially progressive (though that depends a lot on our age and where we live).

wholeheartedly agree. As part of that more progressive stance, NZ is also more racially integrated and developing a culture that is a blend of Polynesian (mainly Maori) and European. Sadly that’s not true in Australia, where the Aboriginal culture and peoples are largely absent from the overall society. I hope that changes!

Australia has treated their indigenous people terribly - and still does, with voting rights only bestowed in the 1960s, no treaty, and little constitutional recognition. While rave relations are not perfect in New Zealand, the welfare of indigenous Kiwis is far superior to that of indigenous Aussies. White Australians should be horrified at their behaviour

Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘. Australia has a lot more aggression such as a lot more nature destroyed by humans. Massive open-cut mines, Snowy Mountains Scheme (where a whole ecosystem of water is artificially diverted over a mountain range), desalination plants, deserts turned into farmland via irrigation schemes. Also a lot of other aggressive things like industrial scale farming (vineyards, olive groves and almond orchards the sizes of small countries), live animal export, barramundi farms so isolated they require fly-in fly-out workers. Australia is more aggressive than New Zealand in many aspects 😊.

New Zealand in the past 20 years has been turned into one big Dairy farm. Their rivers and lakes are the most polluted in the developed world. Ecoli has infected 75% of its lands, nitrate levels in drinking water is dangerously high and bowel cancer is going throught he roof. Interesting just to see the difference in appearances of the average demographic you chose. I think the biggest difference is the culture. NZ has a dominant Maori cultural influence but is also a melting pot of multiple cultures and seems more culturally inclusive. Australia is basically a place Kiwis come to for work and lifestyle so that says a lot about both countries I think. I'm a Kiwi living in Australia. And yes, the Kiwis invented the pav. Australia has a different energy and a great sense of humor. They can be brutal but have your back when the chips are down. Think Christchurch earthquake, the Aussies for us, were the calvary. As an Aussie I always notice how many things that are common place in Australia are rare or totally absent in New Zealand. It’s just a reflection of the different ethnic mix of the populations, not just the first nations people, but from the early days of European/Asian settlement to the current day. The historical Irish influence is everywhere in Australia, similarly the impact of immigration from countries like Germany, eastern Europe, and of the course the Mediterranean. The middle eastern influence is also pretty noticeable in a lot of Australian cities. And of course, there are China Towns that go back to the mid 1800s. In comparison New Zealand has been shaped by much narrower cultural influences. I’m not from Sydney, but I haven’t found people there to be “rude” or “aggressive.” Busy, in a hurry, or time poor, typically yes, but that’s not “rude,” or “aggressive.” In relaxed settings, they are as friendly and open as people from anywhere else, including New Zealand.

Anna Pavlova (the famous Russian Ballet dancer) visited Australia before visiting New Zealand. And when you consider that just about every country she had visited so far, had also named a cake, or some food related item before she ever got to either Australia or New Zealand. Its already a moot point. And then there is the fact that the recipes are slightly different too, and finally the fact that communication between countries was difficult. No one would waste money on a overseas telegram, just to discuss cake recipes, as other news was far more appropriate and important. So we probably both decided to jump in on the cake renaming bandwagon, that was already well established well before she got here anyway. And then there is the fact that we bothdo share some similarities too, so we both probably thought of the same sort of cake recipe (which apparently wasn't new in the first place anyway) in which to name in her honour. So since she visited Australia first, we came up with it first. The Kiwis would have had no idea, and so did the same thing, the fact that the recipes are similar is very likely merely consistence. It doesn't change the fact that we named that particular type of desert in honour after Anna Pavlova's visit before the Kiwis. That's a fact. But as I said, she already had numerous things (such as cakes etc) named after her by this point, its not exactly a new thing, nor was the original recipes either. The cake got its name from a famous person, that's why its famous, and she visited us Aussies first. So you have your answer. P.S. Do Aussies claim other people and things (from New Zealand) as being from Australia. Absolutely. Buts that's only because we like them so much. They are ore family after all.

Lamington is 1000% an Aussie invention. It was named after Qld's eighth governor, Lord Lamington, who served from 1896 - 1901. Recipes were published in Qld Country Life newspaper as early as the late 1800's. Pavlova is a little more contentious. And Russell Crowe is a Kiwi dick!

As an Aussie, I absolutely love New Zealand and Kiwis in general. We both have our differences lol I have worked with several kiwis over the years though that come here and act as though the country owes them something - speaking with other mates in different parts of Australia they have agreed. So maybe change that attitude to those who do 👊🏻😂 In saying that I have also worked with some absolute legends too, and the good ones work hard and are all about family! The Maori culture is amazing and seemingly well respected to our Indigenous, who are currently being used as pawns via the Government. Anyways, cheers Alex. You’re looking well brother!

I think the racist Australian policy visa changes of the mid 1990's designed to block Islanders using NZ as a back door into Australia lead to a lot of unnecessary issues for Kiwis in Australia regardless of ethnicity, and it never worked. Did you know if a ex NZ couple living in Australia for say 10+ years "permanently" on a so called "temporary" Special category visa 444 have a child , that child is not legally an Australian, freaken born in Australia!. Luckily the current Australian government has corrected most of the issues in the last few months so complaining will end. Basically if Kiwis have lived in Australia for 5+ years they can now apply for citizenship the same as Aussies in NZ. Australia has only had a small net gain form NZ over the last decade , a large drop from prior decades, a combination of Australia being a little less attractive and NZ picking up.

One factor that may influence people's responses is that Kiwi's have a slightly higher level of insecurity about their country compared to Australians and do need that (re)validation, even though many aspects of New Zealand are in fact great. The general confidence levels are broadly higher in Australia, but not to the extent of the Americans. However, in the sample of Australian interviewees, it was interesting to see many Australian concede certain claims to New Zealand, yet no Kiwis conceded anything to Australia (other than cost of living, wages). That speaks to the confidence aspect. Be more confident in yourselves Kiwis!!!

1. Ways indigenous culture is treated…….2. Landscapes ( Oz is mainly desert while NZ is green) …….3. Societal attitude (NZ is humble with Tall Poppy syndrome, whereas Oz tends to be vocal with Pride …. 4. Kiwis far more laid back and far too used to poor customer service…Aussies will let you know fast if something isn’t good. ( I dived into some that prolly get lash back on lol) As a kiwi, I love some of the Aussie traits and this is why we can both have each others backs…we see and can laugh to each other about the good and the bad.

I think point 1 is more about how the different indigenous cultures view and nurture their own culture. To Aboriginal Australians, their culture is something precious to be shared in a very measured and thought-out way and only with people who have demonstrated their respect and affinity with the culture and people. In New Zealand there seems (to Aussies) to be wide spread appropriation of Maori culture often for commercial gain particularly in the tourism industry.

ChCh earthquake showed how much Oz loves their NZ brothers. We went and helped as soon as possible. They run us down over rugby and we stir them over cricket. My best Aussie mate moved to NZ when he married a Kiwi sheila. He misses AFL most of all and is hanging out to return.

Btw I've met many Aussies from my school they were nice and kind. Especially Aussie girls were more open and cheerful than Kiwi girls. But overally I don't see much difference between us. Google is Saying the flat white was invented in 1985 in in Moors expresso bar in sydney by Alan Preston. Another Google page is saying it was invented in 1989 in a Wellington NZ by Fraser Mcinnes. Another post Google post said Derek Townsend, founder of Karajoz Coffee company in NZ invented it. Will we ever know who really invented it.

In reality it was probably first "invented" some time between or a little after the late 1920s (first expresso machine in the country) to late 1940s (when espresso started to become a "big thing" in Australian culture) when a customer asked their barista for a cappuccino with less froth... Just like the Kiwi and Australian Pavlovas are two distinct (and different) recipes for a meringue, a type of dessert that had been around a long, long time before Kiwis started arguing with Aussies about who invented what...

Australians and New Zealanders are the same when they are outside either of these countries. Like brothers that argue when they are at home and firmly stick together when the are away from home. Having said that. I'm Australian, Kiwi's seem nicer and more humble. Maori's especially seem nice, you meet Maori men that are man mountains that could easily rip your head off and they are the humblest nice respectful people.

Our pavlovas and lamingtons (we actually have coconut trees 🌴) were first and are slightly bigger and very muchly more deliciously delightful……our fish taste better than their fush….and we also have the best Timtams and ooohhh as well as the best rugby team…league!!!!….other than that the Holdens 🚘🚘are the same and “yeh-nah” is pretty much the same as well 😊…..Chinese goose-berries are actually kiwi fruits 🥝👍🏾!!!!
