I agree. All newly issued coins should have long ago carried the portrait of King Charles. The special issue coins are a stupid idea; the remove the dignity from our coinage and are generally quite inappropriate.

The RAM was legally able to strike coins with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth until May 2024. Each year, new date coins begin minting around September/October the previous year (we have just seen the release of 2025 coins in the form of the Perth Mint Lunar Snake which is also legal tender). As Australia took some time to have an effigy of King Charles designed and approved, there was going to be a crossover. It may have been quicker had we used the Royal Mint's Martin Jennings effigy, however we didn't. The 2024 coins struck with the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Effigy were very likely approved prior to the finalisation of Dan Thorne's King Charles effigy, and then there was the time needed for tooling new coin dies. There's nothing odd, just inevitable red-tape and government approvals, practical delays for tooling and preparation. We also cannot forget that RAM did release a 2023 $1 regular mob of roos circulation coin with King Charles in December 2023.

The year these NIFC tokens were manufactured, or were in manufacture, corresponds to QE II’s reign. That not necessarily when they were scheduled to be sold by the mint. But so what anyway? Even if they were real circulated coins, there’s no reason why QE II coins shouldn’t continue to be released, both here and in UK if they were already minted for the purpose. No-one is being disrespected.

…so not even a tiny bit odd. What’s odd is that people see something to be ‘offended’ at in such a routine and nondescript matter.

They are not tokens. They are legal tender
@andrewharris42683 ай бұрын
@@kevcump62 they’re not without collectable value but they’re not available at face value either. Whether they’re ’legal tender’ or not is a convenience under law to allow the mint/govt to profit from people’s gullibility. If you can’t get one for face value, they’re NIFC, not coins. But that’s beside the point of the question you posed in your vid regarding perceived disrespect to one or the other monarch.
@kevcump623 ай бұрын
@@andrewharris4268 legal tender NIFC coins are definitely collectible but not just for gullible people. People collect what they collect. People collect all sort of things, from Barbie dolls to cars to stamps. The value of any collectible is determined by what another collector will pay for it. Legal tender coins hold an added advantage or protection to collectors as any attempt to copy them is considered counterfeit. Counterfeiting is punishable by doing serious time because nations definitely don’t appreciate people messing with their currency. So maybe not such a silly choice to collect them.

Even that seems odd to me. Hold them for two years and then release them during the kings reign. I would have thought I that was the case they should have melted them down and used the metal again. It would not be the first time something like that had been done.

Regarding legal tender having to have the effigy of the current reigning monarch that is just not the case. If it were, it would mean that every coin and note in circulation would stop being legal tender as soon as the monarch dies.

He did say, "... in the year it was produced."
@petert33553 ай бұрын
@alansizer2006 Even that does not wash. Example from history. Why were the coins minted during the 18 or so months of Edward the 8th reign minted with his father's obverse? Short answer is it takes time to produce the dies. As such, there has always been a cross over interval on the coinage.
@kevcump623 ай бұрын
True, that makes sense and this is just a question, but don’t the banks take out of circulation coins that don’t have the reigning monarch on them. Perhaps it just because QE2 reigned for longer than most people have lived that it seems so strange. Still think it is very odd to intentionally mint legal tender with two different monarchs at the same time.
@petert33553 ай бұрын
@kevcump62 Remember the change of monarch set. Had the 5 different QEII portraits on the 5c to 1d, and the new CRIII portrait on the 2d. It would appear that the 2d was the first die's created. So depending on each denomination mintage required, it would depend on when the new Charles die was available as to how many coins were minted with each die. Just an aside, die manufacturing time is a lot quicker today than it was in 1937-8. That explains why only the crown got an Edward VIII mintage that was never released.
