I had to drive through Gordon Street in Elsternwick today, and I got to see what used to be the ABC studio where Countdown was shot. It's just a ghost of its former-self now that the ABC had sold off the building. A sad, lonely piece of property that's destined to be just another bunch of souless apartments. You wouldn't think the place once had all that magic. I could see us Countdown kids waiting to be let in - all excited, full of energy. There was a move to prevent the selling of the building.. but prime property is prime property and we all have to move on. It's been 35 years since Countdown was a show.

I can hear the wistful sadness to a treasured time in your life that in bricks and mortar terms is now lost forever Hayley , but like loved ones that have passed , fond and beloved memories live forever as you remember and keep them alive . It’s no coincidence that Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs built mortuary temples as well as their tombs to ensure prayers were said for them for eternity because their belief was that if their name was spoken then they would continue to exist in another place - I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch Hayley for you and your sister to keep alive your loved ones that have passed and the physical places that gave you both so much fun and enjoyment . The Countdown studios and the bands and the people and the vibe and emotions of that time still exist as long as you remember them fondly . I firmly believe that to be true … If I could build a time machine , I wouldn’t use it to go back and fix a broken romantic relationship , nor to visit a favourite place that had been important to me , nor to prevent sone tragedy ….. no .. 😅😜.. I’d gather up every penny I could lay my hands on and go back to 2015 and put it all on Prince of Penzance to win the Melbourne cup @ 100/1 😝.. I’m a terribly shallow old Hector 😅 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering Hey, Gillian and I are also ''shallow'' in that sense. I wouldn't change a thing in my life, nor turn back to fix mistakes and play the relationship game differently. I certainly wouldn't preserve the old Elsternwick studio, and bring back Countdown. Absolutely not! The thing is, no real Countdown kid actually cares about those things. It's mostly the kids that watched the show (viewers) on TV, or some Johnny-Come-Latelys that care. That's why I ended my post about Countdown not being a show for 35 years. I wouldn't describe my feelings as sorrowful with ''wistful sadness'. I was just caught in the moment of looking at the area, and what it's heading towards. The studio was used for other popular TV shows - before and after Countdown. It actually annoyed me when I heard about ''petitions'' and on-line cries over the selling of the building. Yesterday, Dad and I walked around the area and were chatting about the plans on turning what was once this magical place into souless apartments. There's a lot of dreary places around the world that were once amazing and full of life. I don't even need to do anything to keep Countdown's legacy alive. ABC-TV has been having their January re-runs of Countdown for over thirty years. There's been a lot of TV specials on the show, and there was a touring event called ''Countdown Spectacular'' in the 2000's. In my mind's eye, the Countdown years was 1974 to 1983. That's when pop music was at its most enjoyable and my friends and I had the most energy and enthusiasm. Ian Meldrum was young and fit enough to travel the world and drag popstars into the studio, and us Countdown kids were a strong network that were able to influence sales of singles. I'm not going to feel sad over stuff that died forty years ago. Gillian has only started to talk about Countdow this year. She had no interest in looking back, and when anybody mentioned the show, she'd fob off the subject like it was just some passing fad in her past. I think it was Cynthia saying something about Countdown being a kids show when commenting on Australian Crawl's ''Beautiful People'' that got Gillian to look at the show differently. Cheers, Hayley

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering lol, No.. I'm not some sad old lady wishing it all come back. In spite of the constant references to Countdown that spill over on almost every Aussie song that the Haniers react to, a lot of us have left those Countdown years behind before the show even ended. It's just that so many of those songs fall in that Countdown period, and many of the artists are beneficiaries of Countdown exposure, as well as, the sweat and pocket money of Countdown kids. I have always taken an interest in everything to do with Countdown, from documentaries to books to attending the Countdown Spectacular concerts. Gillian was the opposite. She wanted nothing to do with the show after the unceremonious ending of Countdown Revolution. That ending in 1990 involved her and her friends, who were fellow Countdown kids and hosts of the show. My sister puts heart into things she believes in, and finds it hard to cut off from disappointment. When Countdown stopped caring about the kids, I stopped caring for Countdown and drew my attention to live music and clubbing. Gillian quit two years later, but then jumped onto the Countdown Revolution thing until that turned to shit. But Gillian is smarter than I am in other ways, and I tend to put my heart before my head when it comes to other matters... Gillian and I were also dancers - becoming semi-professional. I worked as a model in the 80's. We both appeared as extras in TV commercials, and music videos I was one of the coolest chicks in the Melbourne club scene in the 80's... Countdown wasn't my only moment. But we did talk about Countdown during Christmas, as it is a conversation that everybody (bar our kids) can get into. Our dad has anecdotes of the show and the days and nights he had to drive a dozen Countdown kids around.. Our sister-in-law (Matthew's wife) was a Countdown kid... and Brett and Matthew have stories. So, it's a loaded topic...

The song talks about a woman who spends a lot of money on expensive clothes and things. She lives in a big house but feels lonely and sad. She tries to fill the emptiness with material things but it doesn't bring happiness. The song suggests that she needs love and real connections instead of just buying things.

We couldn't understand him so we arent expecting you guys to understand him, LOL. But to s Melburnians we understand that the Back beach (Brighton beach and further south ) is where all the weathy spend their summer holidays, the chalet for the snow can be a lot of different places where it snows and the wealthy congregate. Toorak Road is an an Upper class shopping strip that goes through swanky Melbourne suburbs Toorak, South Yarra and parts of Prahran. I always took it to be about a wealthy 30 something woman who used her money to buy favour getting into all the best places, mixing with Rock Stars etc only to go home to a sad, lonely single life at home who pines for the one thing her wealth cant buy her which is love.

Spending plenty of money on Hoochie to get stoned. Gucci and Fiorucci designer clothes and shoes. Beach house in the summer, chalet in the wintertime. Spend as much as you can but none of these things can fill the void of her emotionally empty life.

The emotion in his beautiful vocal in this song, and maybe the choice of notes on the piano too, always touches me deeply and brings a tear to my eye. Its up there with the best of vocals. Ive never studied the lyrics as you have now, but i had the sense it was about the loneliness of a lady who tried to 'buy' a life of happiness, and shallow trinkets. Whether the lady is personal to James or not, i dunno. But i grew up in greater Melbourne 'burbs in the 70s n 80s and can confirm the reference to "Toorak Rd" is that Toorak was the rich inner suburb where all the mansions were (in that era). Awesome song by an awesome Aussie band. Music that we grew up with. Thanks for the memories of the times.

A rich girl who has literally everything except true love. The back beach is Portsea. Portsea is to Melbournian's what the Hamptons are to New Yorkers. Toorak Road is the equivalent of Rodeo Drive. The chalet for the snow relates to the chalets in Mt Buller where many of Melbourne's wealthy vanish to during the snow season. Children from the government schools send money for the poor...ie: kids from modest working class backgrounds caring for the poor, even though they dint have much themselves, as opposed to this girl having fabulous wealth, yet being indifferent to others living in poverty. Many of Australian Crawl's songs have a cutting social commentary running through them.

My mates and I referred to this track as the ''soap opera'' song, and we always skipped over it when we played that ''Boys Light Up'' album. I used to wish that God magically put this song on an Elton John album, and kept it away from Aussie Crawl's catalogue. Elton has a strong enough relationship with Australia to know Toorack Road. He probably bought clothes there.

A bit of trivia for you. James Reyne hated this song so much that he refused to play it live for a very long time...he just thought it completely silly and a shit song but as he got older and fans at his solo concerts kept requesting it, he realised it was beloved, so he has started playing it now. Oz Crawl started as a bunch of university friends who started a band for fun. A lot of their lyrics are in a similar vein.

Apparently, it was Australian Crawl's eclectic mix of styles that held them back from success in America. Their first album, Boys Light Up, was all over the road, musically. We understood who they were with ''Beautiful People'', ''Indisposed'', and ''The Boys Light Up'', but they seemed to jump styles like their debut was going to be their only album... This song just sounded like a different group, and ''Downhearted'' could have been Hall & Oates or Mondo Rock. Once Guy McDonough joined, it was a sealed deal as to who Oz Crawl was. Then they messed up with the rather humdrum Sons Of Beaches album (with the exception of ''Shut Down'' and maybe ''Daughters of the Northern Coast'').. James Reyne deciding Australian Crawl was his show is what ruined a potentially great band.

You extracted more or less the right meaning from the lyrics. Nobody ever knew what James Reyne was singing about. It was a joke for years, in between the mumbly delivery, the quirky phrasing and the obscure lyricism, who would know what he was on about? “The garden it was dorsetted, the lady she was corseted????” Good luck! The title of this song is a reference to designer clothes, Gucci and Fiorucci. It was also fun to sing, no doubt. Nonetheless, every Australian Crawl song is a beauty and his voice is stunning. Later in his career, he did a solo album of Elvis Presley classics that was very, very good. Try something from that album if you want to understand a bit more as you listen.

@@MorningDewLoop. Interesting?, i like white limbo , it reminds me of the clash, there kind of big hair and shoulder pads though , if you want to hear a good Australian band try acdc , but mind you they are Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✌️

Scrap the lyrics and give the tune over the Bernie Taupin and you might get back a really great track. I've only liked Oz Crawl for their upbeat stuff.

You really think these guys were being serious when they wrote this song? If you can't tell by the title that some tongues were firmly in cheek, then you're probably not equipped to hang with people that enjoy a bit of a laugh...
