Firstly it is clearly understood that foreign mercenaries fighting for Ukraine have been advised that they will be targeted, Ukraine from the beginning of the conflict have routinely being executing Russian prisoners of war, there are multiple videos streamed by the Ukrainians to verify this. Additionally, based on this report it is speculative as to whether this man has been executed. If NATO had honoured its agreement to respect the borders as outlined in the talks after the dissolution of the USSR and honour the Minsk agreement, not creat a coup in Ukraine and raise a 450,000 strong army for the purpose of being a proxy tool, this man would not be there in the first place. Based on reports by Americans and UK solders returning from the conflict the Russians are not routinely executing soldiers. Remember it is the Ukrainian army that is targeting and killing civilians since 2014 well before the special military operation. Facts not propaganda.

Wrong, he was a contract soldier serving with the 66th Mechanised Brigade of the Ukranian Army. He is 100% a POW under the Geneva Convention. People who fight with the French Foreign Legion are protected under the GC just as this man should be!

Why this guy? There is a _lot_ of foreign fighters in Ukraine fighting for the Ukrainians. (See International Legion (Ukraine) or The Ukrainian Foreign Legion.) I doubt that he is either the only or the first foreign national to be captured by the Russians in Ukraine. Others have noted that mercenaries are not covered by the Geneva Convention but is/was Jenkins a mercenary or a foreign fighter? There are options for New Zealanders and citizens of the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada to join the Australian armed forces (under some circumstances), would these people count as mercenaries?
