What a fascinating video! I've always been intrigued by bird calls, and it's amazing to see how Australian Magpies use their vocalizations to communicate with each other over long distances. It's interesting to learn that they have different calls for different situations, such as danger or intruder alerts. The concept of "tribes" in their family groups is also intriguing. It's great to see channels like Wild Home Videos that bring us closer to the wonders of nature and help us appreciate the diversity of life. Thank you for sharing this educational video with us!

All these smart birds have several specific calls. What you dont often get to hear is that they also speak softly to eachother in ways you cant hear from a distance. Im sad that the magpies here in Europe (pica pica) seem to be much more suspicious of people than in australia. Its very hard to strike up a friendship with a Magpie compared the crows and jackdaws where im from. They are great animalsk!

Yes they make you feel good, don't they. Lovely creatures. We live in a region which is quite dry. Some years during summer we get no rain at all for up to four months. Our magpies don't like there rain. They always look miserable when it is raining but as soon as the sun comes up they perk right up. They are really smart, and usually after a good rain the worms come up for air. I wouldn't be surprised if that has something to do with their change of mood😁

It is one of the nicest things to hear when you wake up in the morning with a blue sky and sunshine peeking through the window. Thank you for your comment James. I have to say though, I also really like when they sing during the night. They don't often do it, but every now and again we hear them softly gurgling late into the night. We have no idea what causes them to do it. It is quite a different sound than when they call during the day. Kind of soft like a lullaby. We recently recorded them making that sound at 1 AM and have considered making a video about that but in the meantime we have included the audio as background sound for one of our Australian wildflower Shorts "A tiny Midge orchid" which we will publish this afternoon. If that interests you please leave a comment, we would like to know what other people think about that.

Thank you Carmen! They do have quite a range of sounds. We live next to a national park in Western Australia, quite far from the city or any town so the tribe of Magpies which live here have very little contact with Magpies in other places. I cannot say if it is just our imagination but we have noticed that over the last 20 years they have slightly changed their calls. It seems that they use the piercing call much more frequently than they did before. A thought struck us that it might be possible that due to its isolation this tribe of Magpies might have developed a slightly different language to other Magpie tribes far away. Who knows, but it is an interesting possibility. They certainly are intelligent enough to do it. Kind regards and greetings

Yes that's really true. And if you do something nasty to them they remember it too and respond accordingly😁 They can remember faces and have a very good memory. A neighbour brought us a starving juvenile once which we nursed back to health and this little guy went everywhere with me. As soon as we got up he would jump off his perch and run to the fridge making these feed me noises because he figured out that his food was kept in the fridge. And when I went gardening he would be right there next to me watching for worms that got dug up. And if I was pruning he'd sit on my shoulder. We called him Buddy😊

once you befriend a magpie mischief they will warble for feed and mark their territory with different songs, I've also heard my male call his female to come in and the chicks have a distinct call as well. It's fascinating to observe these highly intelligent and curious animals and they give back as much as you give them.

Yes there are many interesting aspects to the behaviour of Australian Magpies. The birds in this video are members of a wild tribe which lives on our property. We live in a rural area and there are no neighbours around. Next to our house is a cleared paddock surrounded by tall trees and this is their territory which they defend vigorously. These birds are not used to seeing humans and they behave very differently to Magpies in the city. Our vegetable garden and sheds are at the other side of the cleared paddock so we walk across several times a day under the gaze of these birds. We do not get swooped. Not even during nesting season. They also warn us when there is a snake or lizard near by. We are convinced that it is deliberate and in their own way they are protecting us. Of course it could be argued that we are just imagining this but in any case it is fascinating to live in close proximity and share the territory of these fierce warriors.
@emeraldheart415
@emeraldheart415 Ай бұрын
They warn you of snakes???! That's incredible. Another reason we need them here in Tassie with all the tigersnakes and copperheads!
@wildhomevideos
@wildhomevideos Ай бұрын
@@emeraldheart415 Yes tat's right. Magpies take the role of Sentinels and alert other birds and animals in their territory of danger. That is why the Kangaroos always listen to their calls. We have an old video called "Hedy's Bar and Perch". The video is not very good but at the end we have filmed a python which curled up in the birdbath. At 10:23 you can see footage where I went up to the python to film it from close up. You can see a shadow passing over and some noise. That was actually a Magpie which swooped close to my head and landed on a low branch directly above the curled up python. It was clearly trying to get my attention and warn me of the python. It probably thought I didn't see it. You can see the Magpie afterwards on the fence nervously hopping around and looking at me. This is how they do it. But you have to be accepted by them, and of course you have to understand their behaviour and calls otherwise you miss the sings. Unfortunately we have never actually caught the warnings on film but it has happened many times. Particularly with large lizards which are a danger to birds. Of course the Magpies don't understand that the lizards are harmless to us. We did another video where this happened called "Magpie confronts Lizard". You have to know that we live on a rural property where the nearest neighbour is kilometres away and we don't feed our Magpies so they usually keep their distance but not when there is danger. Another thing which the Magpies do is eat any ticks which are brought in by kangaroos grazing close to our house, so they are a very nice friends to have around😊

Haha! Yes! We have a tall tree outside our window. I had to use the headphones when I was editing this video otherwise a bunch of them would be on the tree screaming the whole time. Be careful with this. There are Magpie alarm calls mixed in this audio and it is likely to send the Magpies into a frenzy.

@wildhomevideos 11 ай бұрын
My theory is that your magpie tribe is relatively small. We have quite a large tribe at our place so when your magpies heard the audio of so many different birds they felt overwhelmed and did a hasty retreat. It is also quite likely that your place is on the edge of their territory and they backed off to regroup. We have a large open paddock next to our house which is surrounded by high trees. That situation is prime Magpie realestate and we often see them using offensive tactics to repel any would be intruders. I suppose this audio would be useful if you had Magpies that swoop living close to your house and you wanted them to relocate.@@paulmavric887

The speakers on a phone distort some of the sounds and the Magpies can tell the difference. It is likely that they would behave differently if you played it louder and on better quality speakers.@@countrabricksbuildcraze8916

@wildhomevideos
@wildhomevideos Жыл бұрын
This is not a theory, this has been scientifically proven. On a subliminal level our brain is listening. Our ancestors evolved living with nature and listening for potential threats was important for survival. Our brain translates harmonious birdsong as "no danger", and absence of birdsong raises the alarm hormones "just in case". There have been many studies which confirm this and there is a lot of literature regarding this available. We have lived on an isolated rural property for more than 30 years and rarely see another human more than once a week. But we see birds and animals every waking hour. If you watch the kangaroos grazing peacefully in the meadow, you can see their ears constantly shifting, listening to what sounds the birds make. When a Magpie makes an alarm call their heads pop up straight away. And if a flock of parrots takes off from the ground they get nervous. Magpies are really very interesting birds. They form very close relationships with people. If you regularly visit your magpies in the park and give them food, it won't be long before they trust you enough to take it from your hand. But please don't feed them bread or junk food, just google what they should eat. Thank you very much for your engaging comment Warren, and best of luck with your new friends😊

Stunning film. Fascinating to read how magpies communicate with other groups long distance. Their voices certainly do carry quite far and are wonderful to listen to (and try to figure out what they might be calling about). Thank you, we really appreciate to have someone comment on the audio quality. Coming from a musician is even more welcome. We find it really hard to record a good clear sound of bird calls. Even a slight breeze creates unwanted noises and the mike picks up the sound of an airplane or car from many kilometres away. To tell you the truth, it takes us longer to edit the unwanted noise out of the video than to edit the images. It is really heartwarming to read about Bella. What a great little friend. We nursed a fledgling male Magpie some time ago. He would go everywhere with me. We called him Buddy. When he grew up he would sit on my shoulder and preen my eyebrows. An acquaintance once saw that. His jaw dropped down and he got all panicky. "That's dangerous!" he said all nervously shaking his hands😅He clearly didn't understand how loving that little bird was. It is really good that you still take care of Bella. Magpies belong to a tribe and mostly don't survive long alone if they get separated from their tribe. Other Magpies will attack them if they try to forage on their territory and it takes a long time before a tribe accepts a newcommer if ever, so Bella will need your support. It gives us a nice feeling when we think that there are birds which benefit from our videos so thanks again for letting us know about Bella😊

How beautiful! Have loved magpies all my life. Haven't heard some magpie calls in your video before. I recognize the Shrike & Fantail (Willy Wagtail). We live on the edge of a Reserve & "our" local maggies know the people whose gardens they visit & never swoop us. They nest locally & the young are funny! My Auntie had magpies tapping on her kitchen window daily, to say Hi! She occasionally gave them some minced meat. They would walk behind her, along the street when she went for her stroll. They are very intelligent! Thank God there is the beauty in Nature as mankind is more poorly behaved each day with awful crime & dangerous driving etc. Enjoy wildlife. It's uplifting. 🙏 Thanks for the video 🥰🦘🦘🦘

Thank you Linda! All those birds you mentioned are featured in our other videos. We like to record ambient sounds but we find it very difficult to get good clear sounds without some airplane or tractor in the distance or wind noise. Yes the Magpies are really intelligent but more than that, they have such a lovely character. Sure they can be mean. They are fierce warriors after all and need to protect themselves and their members. Same as we humans do. But when they are treated with love and kindness they respond with love and kindness. That is why they were voted Australias favourite bird at one stage. Have you come across the Fairy wrens in your area. The Blue Fairy wren was also voted Australias favourite bird at one stage too. The males are really stunning but the reason they are so popular is because of their behaviour. They are just so adorable. People often feed them to keep a family in their garden. We have several families living on our property alongside our magpie tribe and as long as you have thick bushes in your garden where the Fairy Wrens can hide and forage you can enjoy having both of these birds. It's a fantastic combo, believe me. But one word of warning. If you get the Fairy Wrens established in your garden you are very likely to neglect your chores😐

The ones with a home range that includes my house know me and call nicely when I’m about and are quite friendly. The ones further out say very little and bomb my dogs during spring 🤠

I think ours have developed a unique call. I think it is the influence of the Ring-necked parrots which share their territory. Thank you for your lovely comment

@@stacey7529 I think each family has a slightly different call. They are saying “My Space” to their neighbours”
@wildhomevideos

@@stacey7529 I suppose that is in a similar region to Davo. I am just wondering what they sound like and if there is a bird in the region which has a call that has an influence on the magpies like the Ring-necked parrot seems to have on ours, or whether that call is uniquely Magpie.

I spend a lot of time adjusting the levels with the equaliser to get rid of unwanted sound. Most times I can't get rid of the hiss without loosing sound quality, but it is an great improvement to the unedited audio. This video is taking a page from your book. You like to make long videos. We tend to prefer short ones, but it appears that long videos are getting more popular with YT. It might be that more people are watching on the TV than there used to be. So we thought it might be good to do a few long ones. What is your take on the subject?
