Ours is now approaching ten years, she’s a pistol. She was the runt of her litter, the last of seven litters that her mother had. She was born on St Patrick’s Day, and came into my home on Memorial Day. I’m retired Navy, so we named her Sailor, and since she was born on St Patty’s Day….she is Sailor Luck. While she has slowed a bit, she still hangs with me on my 4-6 mile hikes, which we do 5-6 days a week. Haven’t quite got her into “overnighting” in a tent (I backpack) or to sit for long in my kayak. What a wonderful creature she is…..I literally dread the day that she is no longer with us. One friend of mine, told me that he had had two Aussies…..both lived healthy into their 20s (human years!)…..so I am hopeful that that “dreaded day” is sometime off. This dog is so polite (I know, I know, I’m biased….but she is!)….waiting patiently for me on our trails….and one time, I had some dizzy spells. Scared hell out of me….and they required me to take quite a few rest breaks….and Sailor just sat there looking at me, waiting, and putting her chin on my knee. Can Aussies read our minds? Amazing dogs. A day doesn’t pass, that I see something new in her understanding, intelligence, compassion, patience. Yep…..amazing is the word……and has only served to convince me further of why, dog spelled backwards is…..well, never mind. Great video, amigo!

Our Aussie can tell the kids are on their way home from school when cars start lining up down the street. She gets so happy and waits for me to give her the command "go get the babies" and RACES down the block to round them up. She doesn't nip but will circle and herd them the rest of the way home.

Best dogs ever. Smarter than any human. Never chewed anything that wasn't his, never had a accident in the house. Got him at 8 weeks and the 1st month, I spent walking him around the property line about 4 or 5 times a day. 10 years later and he walks himself around the property line 4 or 5 times a day. (2.5 acres) 88 lbs of muscle. He's not fat either, just solid.

We just got our third!!! Our second, from the same breeder, is 5. We lost our first one in spring 2020 at 15. Right as coVid was cranking up.She was a gift-probably the best gift we ever got! They, like any dog need to be trained, but a lot of that is done almost in a play situation, and so is fun for all. The training can be at odd minutes during the day. Not too long at a time, and conjoined with exercise in a space like a decent yard or a dog-park preferably in an individual run. The genetic line is important,. If you want a ranch dog that's one thing, if you want a family dog, a therapy dog, or want to complete in agility, you need to find lines that will; be suitable. A ranch dog will be active all day and need that, which is waaaayyy too much for other purposes.

I have had my Aussie shepherd for 2 months! She is the smartest dog I’ve ever had. And even though I work three days a week I try and spend as much time as I can with her working. Working for her means being by my side wherever I go lol. She loves my extended family and was easily potty trained! If I tell her no she never needs it repeated!! My shoes are safe!!

Exercise is essential. Be ready to take the time and long walks. Our Aussie loves camping, (drags in firewood), long runs in the snow, chasing squirrels, going on vacation. We live in California, took him to Bryce Canyon N.P. got great comments everywhere we went. Socialize them early and no problems later. Great dog for travel as pet friendly hotels can be size conscious. Love our Aussie!!!!!

I have a couple ... by far the most loyal loving dogs I've ever had... Beau & Bits, (brother & sister) might be the smartest animal I've had the pleasure of training. I spent a few month's w/ them when they were pups and it paid off 10 fold. They will protect when needed and great around my grand kids. If you do get one, please pay attention to their needs ... they always need to run ..play.. fetch a ball... they need it daily so if you do get one .. you need to be active. Doesn't have to be for long 20+ mins each now ... but I do exercise them at least 2x a day ... the older they get the less time I run them. They just turned 9 .. still need it.. they keep me fit... it's not just a dog... they are part of our family ... you won't regret this breed. I will never be without one in my Life. They will let you know when they need to go out side ..My dogs have never had an accident inside... BITS 50+LBS and Beau is 60+ both are fit. As you can tell I love this breed. Also .. if I ever have an intruder ... oh boy did they pick the wrong house ... they will die trying to protect you .. these dogs love us and we love them... my only regret is I didn't get 3 when I was offered!

She’s even starting to understand when they are done playing and will stop engaging. I love watching her figuring out the aliens with needles for fingers. We got our first Aussie last week. The breeder is a relative and this one was the runt. He's small for 9 weeks but growing fast. We have a cat and a somewhat senior Shih Tsu which is low energy and very much an indoor dog. This little guy (Jax) is full of energy and very much wants to be outside. The cat quickly put him in his place and they now have an understanding. The Shih Tsu will take a little longer. We are used to high energy as we previously had Golden Retrievers. The second one arrived as a pup and remained in his puppy stage for far longer than most. I guess I'll be spending a lot more time at the park and walking trail, as I have a feeling this one will be Golden times four.

My husband and I got my first Australian Shepherd puppy last August, sadly he died a month later. We ended up getting the puppy's sister and brother (after a lot of talks convincing my husband to bring thr boy home too). I love seeing their personalities!! They are beautiful dogs and so smart. It is amazing to see the connection we have with them. Of course our girl is more my husband's dog and our boy more my dog, however I adore how the love both of us. They are brilliant but can be very stubborn in my experience! None the less I adore Australian Shepherds!! I think I found my breed for life.

Yes... if properly trained from the beginning to know what they should and shouldn't do. I have a 10 acre small farm with chickens, cats and other assorted birds and critters. They can consider them a part of the family. But understand that they really love being with their humans. I mean really. They can be jealous. And they are persistent. The energy level is no joke! We got our first Aussie when he was 9 weeks old, 2-3 months ago. The breeder told us we needed to make sure we knew what we were getting into. I have a 2 yr old and a 13 yr old, run the household, I basically thrive on chaos haha. I was completely overwhelmed the first 6 weeks!! He’s an awesome puppy.. but he’s still a puppy. If I don’t take him to the dog park, doggy day care, exercise him etc every single morning then he’s got so much energy he doesn’t know what to with himself. Besides having room to run, you have got to have the time! At least while they’re puppies.. don’t know about the adults yet haha

Hi Will, I just discovered your fabulous channel and I have lots of content to watch. I currently have a 9 year old tri coloured male Aussie named Sam- he is my universe. Im sure you’ve covered it , but if you haven’t- folks need to know, when breeding Aussies, you cannot breed two Merle’s or two tri’s- it has to be one of each- otherwise there could be severe health issues with the puppies.

How often do puppies need to be feed? Do you recommend snacks? I have had older dogs before and they came potty trained and were work but also a lot of joy. Thank you.

They seem a little underweight your Aussie pups are 15 weeks old which is a little over three months old. The average weight for a three month old Aussie pup is about fifteen to twenty pounds. That’s just a simple google search I’m no vet and I don’t know your pups personally. I’d feed them more personally so they can gain weight and grow more.

I'm not personally familiar with that as far as sizing, but I do know you NEVER want to breed Two of a Kind identical in color,, say two identical Merles or two identical tri-color Reds,, there's a good chance they will end up with Eye deformation and or deafness, some turn out with a lot of white, Bull Terriers have the same issues.

I have never known an Aussie with a 'very low prey drive'. Sorry got to call it like I see it. I've owned 3 and many Aussie crosses. They can be trained to be protective of stock easilly, but anything that isnt stock- from rats to redtail hawks- are fair game for these primitive canines. Aussies do not 'generally look out' to anyone for guidance. They generally keep tabs on where you are at and if they wish to obey any commands you may be giving. They keep an eye on their owners because they are velcro dogs at heart.

Are they jumpers? How high of a fence does one need to be sure they can't jump out? Diggers? are they diggers?
@madginger3634
@madginger3634 4 жыл бұрын
@@twistof-faith1170 both. They can jump very high and are very stubborn. So failing once will not stop an Aussie. If they at first don't succeed, they will try, try, try again til they do. Aussies will dig if bored. I used to channel one of my Aussies bored digging to work for me. I taught him to 'dig dig' where I tapped the ground. He was more than happy to break ground for me and it made some projects eminently easier.

Um, untrue. I had two aussies and did not have the same experience as yourself. Maybe best to speak for yourself and your dogs not as a whole.
@madginger3634
@madginger3634 4 жыл бұрын
@@milesandpages no one will have exactly the same experiences with the same breed. All dogs are individuals even within a breed. There are also lines. Different breeders select for different traits in their lines. Were your 2 dogs related to each other? Their line may have been bred to be more friendly than the many different lined dogs I had, or have known. That may have been why my own experiences are so different than your own. I put real experiences I have had. I won't sugar coat them. Aussies are very intense dogs, and when bred the old way they are very different than what you apparently experienced.

"With some sort of collie stock"- inaccurate. They specifically crossed the Berger de Pyrenees with English and farm collie to add size and guarding ability. It's not a mystery.

seems like that is partially your fault or she had a UTI, either way; one bad experience with a singular dog doesnt mean its the "worst breed," one dog doesnt speak for millions of others.

@@fareou not my fault. Its literally a characteristic of many female aussies that is extremely hard for the average person to train away. A dog the piddles everywhere literally 24/7 is the absolute worst thing ever. I would have been happy to take it out back and shoot it, but thankfully my wife rehomed her to an aussie obedience trainer

Unusual. I wonder how old she was when you got her. They are usually very easily trained to a pee pad or to go outside.

Turns put the pup was born with a birth defect. Detached kidney tubes, which explained the literal constant peeing. Toxins built up, and she died at 8 months . A real unfortunate introduction to Aussies! Regardless of the defect, she was still dumb as a post, god rest her puppy soul P s. Lots of fair presumptions that i am a lax trainer as well lol. Oh well
