Australian Television History CBN 8 a look back with an original presenter

Presenter/organist Stephen Fleay looks back to the 1960's when country television was in its infancy. Stephen who later became a BBC/CBS correspondent in Europe took a series of colour slides "back then" and shows some for the first time...a sort of "colourful black and white television". It is gratifying to know there are archivers out there, says Stephen who have put up some memorable CBN 8 CWN 6 black and white footage from so long ago.....footage which if not uploaded to KZbin would never have been seen again. Stephen in this video clip pays tribute to all those pioneers of Australian Television...many of them still around.

Thank you for recognising my dad Bob McGready as a pioneer of regional television. Jackpot Quiz was also produced live from NBN 3 Newcastle and CTC7 Canberra. What a lost legend.

Hello Deboroah. I produced and directed many of Bob programmes at CBN8. Bob was a good friend, easy to work with and I have to say Bob always gave it his best.

Rob....you're an absolute gem....tracking down an old colleague after all these years. We had a grand time back then. No more CBN 8 CWN 6...it's all gone now, virtually a relay with a local news every day...Television back then was "really in its Prime"...not now..however we do have all those splendid memories.....aint they grand!!!

@favenchi Yeah it would be good to have a community tv station. I have heard that the people who do community tv stations in Australia are thinking of allocating a community tv station license for the Orange area! It would be great to see that station working the way it used to! I am actually in community radio myself so I am staying tuned so to speak!

Grew up on cbn8 then moved to singleton and had nbn television and being a teen i thought the restructuring of the stations was exciting but it was the death nell of regional television

I wonder what Prime will do with the CBN 8 Building now they shut it down. Local Community TV is not a bad idea.

2GZ....before Television this was a most impressive radio station. Well equipped before it's time, it is said that 2GZ would be able to broadcast programes by landline to transmitters in Sydney should world war 2 spread all over mainland australia. The studios in downtown Orange were built to make any programme, and there was an auditorium on the upper floor. Studios were lead lined & a host of famous voices passed through the 2GZ studio doors, including John Laws.

@poganstick so very very sad that the building will no longer be used for television broadcast....it ws purpose built...designed along the lines of an RCA station in the US ......Orange has no longer any "local" television...maybe the new australian government (whoever that will be) should consider providing Orange with community television.

and too think nothing will be broadcast from there anymore. The station is being sold off and the land is set to become a good guys store.

From the US: This owner seemed to love RCA (US) gear...by this time had the Aust. government eased up on the tariffs for importing US gear?

I'm not sure.....there may have been incentives for start up smaller country TV stations RCA did very well equipping many new TV stations I remember very high prices for the gear

the car dealer across the road owns the building now. New newcrest mining used it as a training facility and office quarters for a few years. now it sits empty again. i am not sure but because the building contains esbestos they dont know what to do with it. if a community tv station wants to take over it it will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the place up. and i know this has taken 6 years for me to reply but the community radio station i was refering to was fm107.5.
