Former Australian Army lawyer David McBride has been sentenced to five years and eight months for disclosing information regarding alleged Australian war crimes in Afghanistan.
Supporters of McBride have voiced concerns that the Australian government is prioritizing punishing him over addressing the alleged perpetrators of war crimes.
McBride, surrounded by supporters and his pet dog, arrived at the Supreme Court in Canberra this morning. He will remain in custody until at least August 13, 2026, before being eligible for parole.

The conviction of David McBride, who courageously exposed alleged war crimes, calls for immediate attention; his imprisonment is a stark reminder of the need to protect whistleblowers who act in the public interest. It is imperative that we advocate for his freedom, ensuring that those who speak the truth are not silenced but celebrated for their integrity

Australia does not have the same amount of troops the US does, and special forces is dirty in your face warfare, when you have a bunch of guys on high rotation at war for 10 years, war crimes like this is what your going to get, you get spared what the Taliban did, no one in the ABC are going to do a story on that, this is why the military have there own courts, judged by people that have seen combat and war and can contextualize it, i'm not making excuses for what these soldiers did , but the generals and politicians were warned that our troops were being left in combat zones for far to long and being rotated in far to much.

The war crimes at the bottom were only a product of the real issue here, the administration was refusing to prosecute really bad cases, yet slamming down on ones either less serious or not even war crimes. Mcbride leaked this information because he wanted all the soldiers to be held accountable equally. All this just shows how we really are just the puppets doing the dirty work for the US.
