Gus has been the easiest dog to train I have even known. That being said, people need to understand that you do not own a Cattle Dog, they own you. They will steal your heart and amaze you at every turn. They will push you to the point of wanting to strangle them and then just at that point, turn on the cuteness. They are, the masters of manipulation.

We got our Red Heeler as a very well trained rescue dog. Our guy named Ranger is amazing. I am a runner and would load up the babies in our double wide stroller and we'd run for at least 5 miles on dusty AZ trails. When we'd turn the loop on our half way point, he'd start to drag because he hated that we were halfway. Where we lived, there were Bobcats, javalina's, aggressive coyotes and mountain lions ... I always felt safe running when Ranger was with me. Hed do anything for me. He LOVED it until he got Valley Fever. He's never been the same. Could only go three miles after. He loves me and tolerates everyone else because he knows I love those other people. He is my velcro dog and follows me even though he's old now, and it hurts him a lot to be on his feet so much. It breaks my heart for him. Love this intelligent, brilliant, serious, loyal breed.

4 in the morning, he brings me his leash, and then stares at me till I get up. We run at least 2 miles, then if it’s the weekend, play all sorts of mental and physical games. He’s 7 now, and hasn’t slowed down. I got him in junior high, and at 12 months he started tearing around like a maniac. Socialized him intensely, and now he thinks every kid and every other dog is his friend. That can be good and bad.

I have owned blue cattle dogs for many years both female and male long tail and stumpy and have just now bought my very first red cattle dog and I have to say I think the red dog is on another level again. Wynnie is now 10 weeks old but from 7 weeks she has been fetching and bringing back a ball when thrown and also sitting and staying on command. Super smart and sticks to my side like glue. Always watching and listening for something to happen. I also have to say that you are correct about the whole protective thing and they are super protective to the point you dont have to worry about anyone breaking into your property. Speaking for my dogs they have always been very good with children of all ages even the very young going to great lengths to make sure they are very protected and will definately put themselves in the line of fire to make sure they keeping their person or people safe. If you are prepared to put in the work you will be rewarded more than you could possibly imagine. Love love love this breed.

It will be amazing. Heelers are velcro dogs and take them everywhere with you. At ten, they are still very active. They love to walk on a leash or free. Do not over feed her or give too many treats. A little vanilla ice cream is a great treat to give her in the evening after a nice walk. Heelers are very clean dogs and only require bathing once a month. However, you should brush them once a week. We lost our Red Heeler, Greta 1 year, 2 months, 18 days and 50 minutes ago. We think of her many times a day after having her for 13 1/2 years. So, be prepared

Told myself I was never getting another one but that lasted for all of two weeks till my uncle found some unregistered Texas heelers selling for 200 and I ended up getting one.

Hey everybody who has a Blue Heeler is a very Smart person. 13:56 . I can tell you that they're the best dog you could ever have with out a doubt! We had one a blue one and he was the smartest dog I've ever seen. I don't care how far or how high in the air you threw a frizzby he would catch it before it hit the ground. Not only that we had a screen door at the back door when he would go outside and then go to come back in he would scratch the door to let him back in! Well we got tired of opening the door ever time, so we put about a 8 inch strap on the door for him to pull it open. Well when he would come to the door to be let in and would scratch the door we would tell him to pull that thing on door and he would get so mad because we wouldn't let him in he would finally just jerk the door open as hard as he could so it would slam against the wall on the outside! He was almost 16 when he died I mean like not but a week or two before his birthday. It just about killed us, but we also know he was in a lot of pain before he died and at least he's not in pain anymore are you Dingo Payne!! Momma Loves you no matter where you are baby dog.

My cattle dog x is 15 plus, blind, deaf, arthritic, but my goodness she loves when the lead comes out and she gets to patrol her streets! I have also seen her take off after little creatures rustling around the backyard at night, giving them a good bark! She mostly sleeps though and it is lovely seeing her more mellow energy too. Love this dog ❤

My Bella is a Blue Heeler. She just turned 6 a couple of weeks ago. We don’t have any grandkids and our son lives in Arizona so she is our daughter. She’s my second Cattle Dog. My first was a Kelli. All I can tell you is that she’s smarter than me! I can’t put anything over on her. Her mother was a Blue and her father was a red. In a litter of 6 there were two blues and four reds. Blues and reds are not separate breeds. For lack of a better term, they are “interchangeable” like Labs.

I have a german shepherd/blue heeler, Lucy. She was completely nuts as a young pup, nipping ,herding and totally out of control. I remember crying, thinking what have I done? We worked hard, played hard. Lucy loves people and dogs, not young kids so much. She is now the love of my life at one year. I work from home and we are together most of the time. She requires at least 90 minutes of hiking/running and then mental stimulation. I have lots of chew toys, antlers work great.

We have a 2 yr old male (as of November 2023) shepherd-red heeler mix and a 6.5 yr old female pit and 13 yr old Shepherd-bully and I don't know mix. Kolby, the heeler mix is all things you talk about but, he has not been socialized correctly by us. The other 2 love all people unless they are afraid of PB, she will just stand back and super chill with other animals, except the PB with cats and coyote. Kolby does not have interest in any people but me, will take treats nicely from others, but, if given time to otherwise interact, he just quickly, very quickly goes after their hands or calves. Unfortunately although exposed to people and a variety things one would find during daily walks in the neighborhood, he has not been socialized enough or just does not tolerate other people in his space longer than to accept a treat, or behave well with most other animals we pass along the way. He is a whole new ball game and very, very attached to me, needs a very firm, but, kind handling, is the most willing to please dog ever, BUT is a handful and very standoffish with anyone else.

She has yanked me to ground twice and I am in good condition, consider your age before getting a pup, She is just now showing signs of brainwaves! I feel ya. Our heeler is 14 months, too. A wild ride for sure. Both my spouse and I have been yanked to the ground, and I broke my hand on leash a few months ago when our pooch decided to bolt across the street to make a new friend. These heelers may be “medium” sized, but they sure pack a punch in strength. Those hammies have mass. Hang in there, Daniel!

Hi I adopted an ACD red healer and when I got him home I freaked by out when he turned I into a velociraptor… contacted trainer right away. He is smart but trainer states he is really too smart and will test my will. Wish us strength as I really hope to turn this guys rough start into a better life for him… wish I had him as a puppy so I could have started working on his socialization. My trainer really helped with his reactivity but this will be an on going project.

@@marthah7505 Your journey sounds familiar. We adopted our ACD Blue when he was 8 months old - we’re not sure how much/little socialization he had with his prior family. From day one, though, he was over-the-top leash reactive - I felt like a cartoon character trying to handle this spinning, leaping, shrieking dog, while onlookers passed judgment for “not controlling” my dog. We contacted a trainer right away, who said “you won’t get to Rome in a day, but stay consistent and you can improve.” We’ve explored various techniques, watched countless hours of training vids on youtube, read training manuals, all in search of effective method(s) for leash reactivity. Try not to get discouraged when you watch training videos or talk to other dog owners, who may tell you “this is the only way” or “you’re doing it all wrong.” And then you try that method, and you’ve gone nowhere. Every dog is different. Some traits are unique to breed, some are unique to dog. As you get to know your pooch, and as you may try various techniques, you’ll discover what is most effective for YOUR situation. Trust your instincts. Advice that I think is beneficial: start with basic obedience commands, be consistent with training, be present and mindful with your pooch during training, and don’t expect overnight results. Here we are 6 months later. We’re still not in Rome, but we’ve seen improvement! Hang in there, Martha!

New sub here. I'm a new ACD owner...I adopted a 4yo momma and one of her pups after they were dumped on a backroad. I've had them for two months now, and I am absolutely enamored. I honestly can't believe how intelligent they are, but I figured out really quick I needed better skills before they became terrors. Your videos have been so helpful. I feel like I understand my dogs better, which makes me love them even more. Sapphire (momma) is my constant shadow. We bonded super quick, and I could walk her off-leash after only 3 days. I had them off leash yesterday and a someone commented on how well trained they are, so I'd say your strategies are pretty effective!!

mine was an a-hole until he was five years old. after that he was trainable. he wasn't crazy out of control, just would not work for treats as a reward which made it difficult. I have a three year old now and she is now receptive to training. She is very food motivated, to the point of being a tad overweight. With a recent foot surgery, I could not walk or run her. Felt so horrible as if I hurt her in some way. We are now back at it. Hoping for the best, she is truly amazing

I have a red male. I got him at 9 or 10 weeks and had him almost two months. No joke, the only time I’ve ever seen him sleep was on the car ride home and that’s it! Lol No matter how much I try to tire him out he never takes puppy naps. His kennel is in the living room and no matter what time of the day it is, even if I’m as quiet as humanly possibly, by the time I sneak down the hall from my bedroom he up and looking out the door or side of his kennel. I’ve literally never seen him sleep so far lol

We have a Boder Collie/Heeler 50/50 mix, so true on all points. The one thing she still does not like is children, pup is 3 and just really does not like kids. Shy around adults and LOVES all other dogs. I 100% understand the 18 month kicking into high gear. crazy how long they can keep the energy up. Was really surprised when our female had first heat at almost to the day of 6 months. had to miss her spay appt, but got it done when that had passed.

Hello Jack. My name is melody. I'm the very proud owner of the most beautiful blue heeler female named remedy. I rescued her when she was only 6 weeks old. And actually had never owned a dog before ever. Right lol. With that being said I have from the beginning watched your videos. And want to thank you for sharing without people like you I would have been totally Lost.. especially threw the nipping ankle phase. Still have scars on my arms. She's done absolutely amazing. I can even take her to the park and unleash her to run and she follows my every command. Runs circle's literally around me.and comes to me every time I feel she needs to.ive even had people ask if I'm a dog training. Which I then tell them most I've learned was from watching your videos. Now with that being said she's now 8 months old and has never bitten me but when I'm on the phone or not paying her the attention she wants,she's started this new not mean but aggressive behavior where she literally will grab my hand and start barking and howling at me. When my heeler was is her nipping phase I said Timeout loudly picked her up and put her in timeout in a play pen for about two minutes. Then I’d take her out. Usually they’re overstimulated. Rinse and repeat as required.

We have our 2nd heeler. He is a Big 8 month old. Our smaller 3 year old was so hard too at this age until about 2, 2 1/2, and is now helping school him a bit. But his size (almost 50 lbs of muscle) and still being a pup is hard. When he sees another dog, pretty much all breeds, esp poodles, huskies, pits, he goes nuts and so hard to control. We are going to really go back to counter conditioning with high value treats, see if he improves. Hard to even see any neighbors and they all have dogs.

My pup (border collie/heeler/ German shepherd) is now 13 weeks. I live on a 34 acre ranch (w/9 sheep)…I found him sitting next to a jackrabbit carcass a hawk dropped, I thought they came back for it but NOOOOO…he brought the foot & leg in. I noticed a difference for my heeler reducing the teeth action at about 8 months but it did not fully stop until he was about a year to 14 months. I was always playing with him and did my best to be consistent training him by ignoring him and stop playing right when he started doing it and making sure he had plenty to chew on for teething. @@blissfuljoy6049

Think your red cattle dog looks so cool and calm on your couch !! I have a blue one ❤ I will go to an animal rescue for one . So many people get these dogs and are so mis understood . I’m out in the fence less back yard running my Louie several times a day . I’m a stay at home dog mom , and I work from home . So I take breaks and play . My dogs are spoiled ❤ I have three . I never crate train . But if someone does , I just hope they are not in them over 4 hours . I hate cages . Wear Leather insulated gloves to play with your cattle dog . To avoid bloody hands 😂😂😂 . he's seen deer and hasn't had any interest in it. But a lot of that is me training him to not dart away from me. I wouldn't put it past one to go for a deer, but they're so smart you can curb a lot of that natural prey drive easier than other breeds in my opinion

@@carlamartinez4728 Thx. He was outside 24/7 with 2 others. Underwatered n underfed. 2 nd adoption head the first owners doing and decided to feed him table scraps to the point he was grossly overweight and couldn't get up on his back legs. Back at the shelter the got him mobile with extra walks and playtime. Other than ppl not caring or how to care for an ACD he wasn't abused. He's opinionated too. Very tolerable, even with occasional kids playing fairly rough and is exceptionally good natured. He's NOT clingy and is slowly coming around with training. He's not been tied outside once here (and he's out everyday) and has never left the property. Not even to get a milkbone from the neighbors. I'm midline firm but consistent. He's a keeper!!!

Asking for help!! I have a 9 week old heeler pup. She is having lots of fun exploring her world. I take her on walk (no lead) each morning around the property and the last few days I have noticed she has been jumping on me and nipping my feet each time I walk. She might be doing this because she's getting more comfortable, trying to heard me?? as that's what heelers do in nature I guess? It's just becoming difficult for me to walk. I have been trying to re-direct her by giving her chew toys, playing fetch but I would like to be able to reduce the behaviour asap!!

help!...... we just adopted an almost 3 1/2 yr old heeler. he's our second. we lost Blue this past February...he was 14 1/2 and it damn near killed us. this dog's name is Bandit.. we decided to keep his name since the change in families was hard enough on him. it's been 3 weeks and he's doing better than we expected. he thinks my husband is the greatest human being alive.. and he thinks i'm ok too lol. my husband is the one who can still run and play hard with Bandit and he does every day. they play off and on outside from around 8 until 2 when my husband leaves for work. and then i take him out several times before dark...and we watch sunset outside every good weather night. we take him to swim and hike on weekends. we have a really good routine and it's going well except for one thing. his former owners didn't socialize him with other dogs or other people. they also didn't exercise him enough (if at all) and we're in the process of making sure he loses the extra weight. the exercise is definitely helping and the weight loss is obvious now. i have 3 sons.. two have dogs and one will be getting one soon. one got his golden at birth so she's well socialized because we're dog people and we take it seriously. my youngest son just got a rescue lab/rotty mix. he also does really well with other dogs and is very playful.. he's only 11 months old. Bandit is easy to socialize with new people so long as treats and a tennis ball is involved.. and i make sure to do things like hug my kids and grandson in front of him a lot so that he understand they're good. but, omg.. the dogs. he hasn't met my golden grandpuppy yet but he sure met Dio, the lab/rotty mix. Bandit turned into satan and Dio just wanted to play. i have no idea how to socialize him with other dogs at his age. and our family is close.. we get together a LOT. my golden grandpuppy is crate trained so she's not an issue when my son and his wife come to visit. Dio is working on crate training. but on big holidays we're all going to be at my oldest son's and his dog will be there and my other son will bring Dio. help.. seriously. help.

Red heelers for some reason seem to be a lot better to train than Blue heelers! Anyone know why? My Red Box Heeler has picked up everything so quick and he’s very trainable and obedient for the most part…He’s 9 Months and the best dog I’ve ever had! Loyal, obedient, and loving but he still doesn’t mark and he sometimes doesn’t want to listen now! What crazy is when we give him a task like when we’re training him on obstacles, etc. he’ll listen to every word and follows every instruction to a T. Anyways, anyone have any more ideas on task or jobs to give him?

I think I am taking my little guy on too long of a walk each time. Should I keep them shorter since he is only 12 weeks old?

you don't want to take them too far as a young pup! How far are you going? best to keep walks short and longer play time in the yard or something at that age where if they get tired they can lay down

@@diydogguy we’ve been doing like a 15-20 minute walk once a day then several smaller walks around the outside of the house for bathroom and stretching. I just don’t want the walk to do more damage at this age then good.

6mos-18mos was not a joke lol. Three hours a day of activity or else my dogs tornado zoomies would destroy the house

Australia Kelpie~1-2 Months wonderful loving puppy. 2-3 months land-shark. 3-10months kelpie-raptor. 10months onward I was bred to listen and hear you ~ then to individually on my own to make up my own decisions as to what I should do and actions I should take.!🐕‍🦺
