The Indigenous Voice to Parliament Referendum will be decided on October 14, as Australians head to the polls to vote on the question:
“A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?”
It has been a contentious road, with politicians and the public debating all sides of the argument. In this video, The Australian details the journey to the referendum, the conversation that's surrounded it and what the future for Indigenous recognition in the constitution holds.

Wesley Aird made it clear on Q&A, why enshrine "disadvantage" in the Constitution? That's an insult to Aboriginals, effectively saying they're incapable of bettering themselves on their own. There's plenty of successful and wealthy Aboriginals. Also interesting to note, the Indigenous that are pushing this like Noel Pearce, are wealthy as, net worth over $110 million. And how much of that has he spent on helping his "brothers" in the bush that have nothing? Oh that's right, not a cent. Pearce shows his hate and racism in spades. Whenever I mention to the yes camp that they already have a voice, and her name is Lindsay Burney, they go nuts. I wonder what part of "Minister for Indigenous Australians" they don't understand?? Side note: I don't think Wesley Aird will ever get invited on Q&A again, LOL. Way too much common sense and logical reasoning for them.

If the NO vote gets up, that means most Australians, white, black, brown, and every colour in between, and every ethnicity, have voted NO to division, not just the white fella. If Linda Burney says that the voice will fix the mess, then she, and all her ilk have not done their jobs properly, and should be ashamed with their gross incompetence, and mismanagement of indigenous affairs, because with the billions, upon billions of taxpayers dollars spent, there shouldn’t be any indigenous peoples at a disadvantage anywhere. Audit the the NIAA, and every indigenous entity with their fingers in the bucket, and I mean the indigenous elites.

I'm only agreeing with the previous comment that if you have ancestry that goes back many generations in Australia regardless if you are first nations connected you are (in my opinion) indigenous to this country. For instance, telling someone that has over 200 years of ancestry in one land pretty much makes them indigenous. Moreover, with only remote communutes as exceptions all most all of us first nations peoples have European (or other contries) heritage. Does that now eliminate me and my mob/family from saying we are indigenous? Fyi I'm not implying you were saying that just a question for the ether

Interesting demographics in the polls. Those of us old enough to remember ATSIC are saying an overwhelming NO. It also was promised as a silver bullet solution but was an abject failure. Had it been enshrined in our constitution the Aboriginal people who are truly in need of help would be in a world of trouble by now and those who have control of the Indigenous industry would all be stinking rich.

If you just vote “Yes” you dishonour the as to why the 1967 referendum was so successful which was a declaration by 97% of Australians who believed in constitutional equality for all Australians. For the “Yes23” referendum I don’t see any reason why a majority of Australians would want to vote differently to the same principle of the 1967 referendum voters. Write “NO” and pay respect to our 1967 referendum voters who upheld constitutional equality for all Australians for the past 56 years. 🇦🇺💯%

We need to address disadvantage, but the Voice is not the way. Aboriginals have the same voice as everyone else One person One vote One representation It doesn’t get fairer that that. The Constitution is not the problem. The idea of dividing along the lines of colour/race/blood has been shown time and again to go to dark places. It is by definition unfair and so over time breeds resentment, anger, and then racism. The very thing people voting Yes want to avoid. We need to be one people going forward together with equal standing under the rules of the land and addressing disadvantage together where we find it.

The Uluru statement was produced by people claiming to represent just 13 of the 250+ aboriginal language groups, at best just 5.2% of the language groups. The actual % of aboriginal 400+ nations this group represents is likely to be much lower as this information is not readily available. It has come to light since the statement was made public that so many nations were not even asked if they'd like to participate. So how is it that in a democratic society we now have to go vote in a referendum on a proposal put forward by such a small group claiming to represent the aboriginal people?

I thought we were all represented equal as Australians no matter what is the colour of our skin or origin- we live in the now together- we all can achieve the same goals equally as it is- we don’t have to have a separate entry into our Constitution to recognise our indigenous people - they are already covered under the current Constitution like every other Australian like Caucasian and other immigrants from many other countries - remember the song ‘ I am Australian, we’re are many, we are one, from all the lands we come’ that includes our indigenous people because they came here too from other lands way back 👍🏻👍🏻🇦🇺

Aside from some remote aboriginal communities, most people of Aboriginal descent live in the modern world, & therefore most things that affect them affect us as well. So, I don’t see a need for an exclusive, special, élite aboriginal only ‘Voice’ in parliament forever representing 3% of the population & lording it over the remaining 97% of the Australian people.

You know, if I was to say to an Indian or Pakistani national, go back to where you came from, I would be slated as a bigot and a racist, yet continually, I am confronted by my indigenous countrymen and women, with “my ancestors stole the land, and that I should pay rent”, why am I forced to live with such dual values and hypocrisy? My forebears came here, 135 years ago, and for that I am expected to pay penance, and be inundated with guilt. I am only too happy to be repatriated to Surrey, but be assured, I’m taking back, my infrastructure, my educational system, my judicial system, my medical and welfare systems, for while we all condemn colonialism, it must be noted that those nations that turn their backs, still choose to retain the residual benefits of it! Yes campaign keeps spouting platitudes and feel good reasons, anecdotal examples of how his experience is a representation of what all indigenous people want somehow its a magic bullet. Nothing in there lists what actions it would take that doesn't already exist in other entities meant for indigenous peoples I migrated to this country believing everyone was treated equally under the constitution. Putting one group of people on a pedestal isn't really treating everyone equally is it? The law and our rights applies to all. At least give all the minorities in this country the respect they deserve by treating them all on a level playing field. Give the communities the help they need yes I agree setup entities or bodies (we already have those and if they're not working then focus on fixing it) but the constitution must be for "all" emphasis on the "ALL"

How many Aboriginal people are constitutional lawyers I wonder, my guess is not many, if any at all. Not enough information about the effects on average Australians for me and how this is going to improve the lives of Aboriginal people. If the system in place, like the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Affairs is not working then it should be defunded or a major shake up needs to happen. 27cents in the dollar is woeful and I can't see the Voice changing that. What I believe will happen is those who hold power in the Aboriginal Community at the moment will gain ever more power and wealth, while the rest the Aboriginal community will gain nothing from this.

Making race part of the constitution will be the biggest mistake we ever make. Nowhere in the world is that acceptable. Let's hope common sense prevails. We have to also take a long, hard look at the accomplishments of the aboriginal industry. At this stage there appears to be very view. To the average Australian taxpayer, this looks like throwing more money down a bottomless pit at a time when everybody is doing it tough. The $40 billion could be spent much better looking after all Australians, regardless of race or colour. VOTE NO.

Could it be said that Jacinta Price, Warren Mundine (and similar naysaying others) who live in nice houses and can afford a nice car and lifestyle for themselves and their families, are more concerned with losing what they own and have via lifestyle and income if their own voice holds less status if the Voice to Parliament does become a reality. Perhaps less status will mean less credit by less position and a big hit to their pride and privileged lifestyle. It's so easy to say NO to so many underprivileged others who struggle with far less and far less educational choices whilst they themselves are sitting comfortably upon a shiny white political pedestal (or other) and living a nice urban or city lifestyle via the educated existence which they or their parents could choose and afford which so many others cannot. However, both Price, Mundine (and similar naysaying others) selfish purpose in reasoning toward a majority far less privileged than they, does align their agenda more with that of an oppressive fascist dictatorship. Why does the word Hypocrisy seem befitting to any questionable narrative and the obvious double standards which their own lifestyles, homes, and places deliver. If NO wins, So Be It... myself and many other Australians living comfortably will keep enjoying what our own privileged (YES) system provides and offers to us and our families. But surely, via the many NO progress failures which any selfish NAYSAYER presents with use of manipulated propaganda and deceit, only to retain the status quo and to protect their own position, assets and lifestyle, will certainly present its consequences. Truth has a way of surfacing and biting the oppressors back. A YES vote is and was always a positive constitution in order to allow more be heard and to be enacted upon without the same manipulation these deceitful naysayers always spin and bring. YES!...
