Really got stuck into this flying series. What strikes me about your videos is that you never have any “trolls” posting in the comments section trashing you or your actions as a pilot, which I think is testament to your skills and your honest approach. Love the banter between you and Alistair.

As long as I’ve lived 21 years in Manchester (although nearer to Liverpool), I’ve always wanted to go in a PA 28 or similar home to Ireland via Dublin and similar Irish airfields - when I lived in Ireland, I’d went from Dublin Weston to Knock in a Tobago but because we were VFR the weather turned to IMC West of the Shannon and we could not land - Weston is also a challenge as it’s in close proximity to the Millitary airspace at Casement (Baldonnel) - I know there are certain rules about flying across the Irish Sea on GA aircraft, but doing so is well worth it, as there are lower aircraft movements in Irish airspace and the scenery in the West of Ireland in particular is stunning

Great stuff, really makes me want to fly a similar trip. If you do a ‘Q+A’ video I’d be interested in seeing the route selection process. I’m assuming you knew you’d get transits through the class C/D and didn’t have an alternative ‘outside CAS’ route as a backup?

Hi John, What I really like about the Europe series is, you are fully dependant on electronic devices and unlike UK flights, not using maps frequently. Following you for many years on youtube that is very unusual of you :-) On a positive note, I am not feeling guilty when I am map-crawling (or better said SkyDeamon crawling).....
@TheFlyingReporter6 жыл бұрын
You got it. I relied exclusively on the ipad charts. It was revolutionary for me. What I will say though, is that the European Airspace is far less complex that the UK, and so visualising it on the Ipad was easy. In the UK, there are so many step climbs to avoid class A, that you don't have much of in the rest of Europe. In the UK, I find having the paper chart, showing my planned cilmbs/descents and distances from each, very helpful. Not necessary in Europe. You just ask for, and are usually granted, a clearance through controlled airspace. On 5 days of flying, we were only told to route around controlled airspace once.
@flyingphobiahelp6 жыл бұрын
Very much enjoyed your European peregrinations. Super job! VFR flight in Europe might be easier than U.K. but both are waaay more challenging (and more stressful) than VFR ops in America. IFR ops are in between! Looking forward to your next adventure in your trusty steed. Douglas

Looks like great fun, I am building my own aircraft, being at it for eleven years, its a four seat 260 hp taildragger, its called the Bearhawk model A four seat. This thing can fly as slow as 40 mph and up to 155 top of the green line. Vne is 175mph. It carries 300 ltr of avgas with a duration of 9 hr with reserves operating lean of peak. The dream is to tour Europe some day in the near future for a couple of months. At present we are based in South Africa about 5000 miles due south of Switzerland. Getting to Europe from here will be an adventure of its own. Fuel is very scarce in Africa and when you get, its extremely expensive, we will have to carry some extra fuel in a two extra tanks in the cargo pod below, each taking 25 ltrs giving me 350 ltrs total fuel with an estimated distance of 1700miles or almost eleven hrs of flight time. We will only need to buy expensive fuel twice, the next fuel stop will be in Europe, all worked out on paper, we know the reality can come up with delays and diversions, wind and more, that can change everything. Just thought you would find it interesting. Enjoying your videos, have fun.

Great! Question, it's SkyDemon you use for navigation, there's also ForeFlight (US), and it calls out runway number and length of the runway (they call that RAAS, Runway Awareness and Advisory System). Wouldn't it be handy for safety reasons to have this feature on SD too ?
@kinlee6646 жыл бұрын
Superb Adventures Jon. I have really enjoyed watching this series and I also like the other stuff you do. I have never flown flight levels before, do you need additional training for it or do you just tell ATC and it will be OK?
@TheFlyingReporter6 жыл бұрын
You fly FL when you pass through the transition altitude. That altitude varies depending on where you are.

Hi Wolfram. I've never used one in anger, and so impossible to recommend. The ones in our group are made by crewsaver. The only stipulation, is that they must not be water activated. Manual only.

Good set of vids. Passenger looked petrified from start to finish. :) Interesting to see how that affected stress levels generally. And nice to see you doing IFR training, much less stress, especially if you type up to a turbo. Poodling along is ok for a while.

Great series of video's Jon as usual with excellent commentary and radio work. One quick question on this final video, at 2:21 and 4:30 you referred to the aircraft as a P28A and not PA28, was that deliberate due to foreign ATC or a brain moment? Look forward to the next exploit, perhaps round the world!!!! Keith
@TheFlyingReporter6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It's the ICAO code for the aircraft type, and the one we put on flight plans. I'd got into the habit of using the proper code when international, as I wasn't sure if they used the more colloquial version that we use over here.

Hi Jon, could you please ask James if he has to ask permission to do a circuit over Stanford-le-Hope when I tweeted him? He made a comment that he could not do a proper right hand circuit last time because he was in Southend airspace. What is the difference between the right hand circuit and a left hand circuit over Stanford-le-Hope? Thanks, Lisa.

Does your aircraft have any auto pilot. If not must be a bit stressful.
@TheFlyingReporter6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It has one, it just doesn't really work. Not really stressful... The plane is designed to be stable, so doesn't take much effort to keep it going straight.

The best, longest duration Alkaline Batteries for the Bose A20 / A30 are Panasonic Evolta AA LR06 Ultimate Long Lasting Alkaline Batteries 6BL 2032
@NickTsiatinis6 жыл бұрын
Two words... ‘Sanyo Eneloop’. Those batteries are like magic for ANR headsets (and rechargeable, so it’ll save you a small fortune). Been using them in my Lightspeed Zulu for the past couple if years now and they’ve never failed me. Anyway! Epic series Jon, I would absolutely *love* to do something like that. Thanks ever so much for sharing.
@TheFlyingReporter6 жыл бұрын
Interesting. What's so special about that brand of rechargable?
@NickTsiatinis6 жыл бұрын
The Flying Reporter they just don’t lose charge while they’re not being used. Most rechargeables, you charge them, leave them in your bag and when you come to use them they’ve inevitably discharged. The Eneloops don’t do that; they keep the charge. And they’re pretty high capacity batteries too if you go for the Eneloop Pro so you’ll not be switching too much. I discovered the Eneloops back in my photography days (around 2010) for my flashguns and still using the same set now with absolutely no degradation in performance. I recommended them to my instructor a few months back for use in his Bose, and he was more than happy with how they performed. :)
@experimental_av6 жыл бұрын
good tip
@Tom_YouTube_stole_my_handle6 жыл бұрын
The Pros are definitely the ones to go for especially if you use them in any device which gets warm in use. Eneloops must be charged slowly though, no 15 minute fast charging.

"Can you imagine doing this in London VFR?" Well, no, not when it makes its TMA a Class A compared to virtually everywhere else around the world that uses B or C TMAs :D
@TheFlyingReporter6 жыл бұрын
That was my point!
@imjustsomeguy726 жыл бұрын
Haha, I thought it might have been but wasn't sure. I suppose it must make some sense to CAA to have it as it is, because of the number of movements. But I will admit, as an Australian, it was bizarre discovering the A LL around London was 2500, with all these GA aerodromes underneath. Our lowest A LL is FL180!
