"Silent Night" (German: "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht") is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. The song has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935 is the fourth best-selling single of all-time.

I honestly prefer the original "Stille Nacht" over "Silent Night." You get an overwhelming sense of quiet and calmness that just isn't quite there in the English translation. The original German words sound like they are being whispered, whereas the English words sound like they are being cried out which doesn't fit the song at all.

Your absolutely right there. Although I grew up with the English version and my parents got all teary at kt as djd teachers. Me? No. I didn't know what all the fuss was about and felt odd because I wasn't moved by it. until j listened to this version 6yrs ago aged 31...I was absolutely sobbing out of nowhere tears came. It doesn't help yhst j was born in Germany and have always felt a strong pull to that country but why thjd made me sob🤷‍♀️. Like you say it does something the english version doesn't.

This should be a EU anthem. We have to remember the sacrifice of our grand grandfathers, but also remember that all they wanted at the end was peace. We should never make war on each others again. We europeans are a big family with a lot of differences, but finally we reached a point where we use those differences to our development and well-being.
