For me, a prime candidate for the best drum programming of all time.

13:30 to the fadeout is one of Autechre's best moments of all time. Such a cool beat pattern - not random or off-grid, just highly accurate super-fast beats that you can dance erratically to and snap along with. On top of that, it's got a dreamy atmosphere created by the droning bass and hopeful high-pitched synth melody, plus what sounds to me like a person whispering "placement placement placement placement" at the end of each loop of the beat. Oh man, I could replay this segment for hours.

its those contrasts that make this part such a masterpiece. also I love that the ambient sounds like its breathing or something. reminds me of the track Atom Heart - (holon) slow motion augmattic disport also has these kinds of subtle contrasts. such a great album

Cycled to work this morning as usual, only just in time, work radio went on too quickly before I'd booted myself up, reaction to, sent mood low, headphones went in, mp3 collection on shuffle. This track came on. Made me feel normal. Mood rising as soon as kick & snare kick in @3:19. Mood restored and feeling ready for day by end of track.

I used to prefer Autechre's early, more melodic stuff but there's a world of treasures to be found in their more abstract, abrasive work. This track is a masterpiece. From around 8 minutes onward, I get goosebumps every time I listen to it. Brilliant.

I'll always be in awe of this track. It starts out as a kind of deranged electro number (complete with horn sample!!) only to get sucked into a wormhole halfway through. Then they rebuild a dub version of it, and slip in some sneaky melodies as it blasts off into space. Beautiful work. One of their best ever.

+Koritsuyuutsu Thanks for this, small correction if we're gonna go there 3:38 is 5/8. 5:27 possibly 6/8 but I cant find quaternotes in groups of six for sure. x

+Snowdenbleep aha, I guess you're not wrong, but I don't know why crotchets (x/4) should be avoided in this case. Do enlighten me though 'cus I'm interested

Having revisited this damn incredible track so often I think I see what you mean. If you count 0:00 at half the speed I am, and call that 4/4, 3:38 is indeed more appropriately 5/8 and 5:27 would be 6/8 - I count the start at double that speed though so I guess I call it all X/4.

Easily their most Gescom moment but also with an awesome broken techno beat.

@flatpanda123456 Totally agree. I initially had a hard time getting into this album, until I did the old fall asleep while listening trick. Woke up in a state where I was still basically asleep and the ending was playing, it seriously blew my mind. Best part of the album imo, Such an epic way to end the album.

Newer stuff? This came out in like 2000. Their newer stuff is spit-shined crazy synthesis stuff, if you wanted the classic 'ae' spirit ala 1990 you might be offended that they put a phaser on a snaredrum. they're about pushing a boundary not staying in one.
