Good clarification. No, there was no payment required when registering. Payment is required only if you choose to purchase support for additional manufacturer's models beyond the included free one.

I think that is true. You get advanced support for one auto manufacturer of your choice for free but have to purchase additional ones.

You downloaded info your vehicle then you use generic crap. Should have also used to show the difference. Pids will tell you a lot more than that generic crap. You don't need the cd. You just download the new version. That's why you had to do it twice. And really you should upgrade by the micro chip rather the usb. Maybe at the time they didn't no it messed up some of these now they tell you its much safer to pull out the micro disk then put in puter and download it in there then when you are done just pop it back in scanner start it up and away you go.

Should the memory card be inside the scanner tool during the software update? Or it needs to be taken out?

The update process can be done in more than one way. Either with the memory card installed in the tool and the USB cable connected between the tool and the computer or with the memory card removed from the tool, installed in the computer, download and write the update to the memory card, install the memory card back in the tool, and restart the tool.

+Alexander Rickman is Yes, of course. The standard OBD2 pids work on all cars. What you are purchasing is support for manufacturer-specific pids.
