It's quite old device by now. It depends on software, sometimes they can come empty and you buy the software depending on your needs. The one in the video is fully loaded - covers pretty much all big brands. I have another scanner for review now, supposedly more powerful. I will make a video within a week.

It depends on your needs, 4 system apart from OBD stuff covers 4 systems - engine, transmission , airbag, and ABS failures. Even though they are most crucial, it is nicer to be able to scan all other systems.. But it also depends on price difference where you getting them from. I was lucky to keep it in exchange for this review, so I didn't have to make a choice ;)

hello i have got one of these from a market and the boot screen wont get past the first start up...there is no sd card with it ,,will it need softwaRE ON THE SD FOR THE SYSTEM TO BOOT UP?

Yes, some of their versions come without software, and it needs to be purchased separately. Please check before you buy.

Awesome review, probably the best I've seen on this tool! One feature I would like to have seen is how to save and find different files of saved data from different scans. I have the MD802 and even though I name my saved scans, when I go into playback those names don't appear but instead a crytic file name which may or may not give a hint to what vehicle it's referring to. Am i doing something wrong or is this a shortcoming of this tool? Thank you.

Thank you :) I didn't try to save much. When I saved the scan while doing the video - it just saved it as "Scan" - it didn't even offer me to name it. Maybe they thought that we won't be saving too much data. Next time I'll have to deal with it, I'll try to play to figure out. Does manual say anything about naming saved data?

In section 5.2.4 of the manual it tells you how to enter a name for a saved vehicle but it doesn't seen to show up every time you save a scan. Same goes for retrieving a saved vehicle although today I had to scan a vehicle I had scanned previously and it showed up as a saved vehicle! I think I got to it by going to SCAN, VEHICLE MAKE (section5.1.1 in my manual), which brings up a screen called DAS which as option #3 "Vehicle selection" brings up a list of saved vehicles. I believe that just saves having to enter the vehicle again manually but not as a way to access previously saved scan data. I would hope it would save any new scans to the same file as the old saved scans but I need to play with it some more to find out. I did find, on the Autel forum, a way to see the saved files on the SD card but you have to have to view the card contents on a computer and then (for example) go to: SCAN>>make>>Europe>>Fiat,and in there find "VehicleSave" where there is a continuous list of info for that scan although it is very hard to decipher as there are no spaces between any of the words. These Autel tools, although quite powerfull in their capabities, seem to make the user do a lot of figuring things out for themselves

Hi mate, I'm just checking to see if you would have a copy of the original software for the unit. I have recently updated the unit, and since updating, it has given me extra functions in terms of extra years, but at the same time, i have lost the full functionality of the unit. I was able to view live data, TCM, ECU etc. but since the update is no longer available. I have contacted autel, and they have advised that they dont have the older software and advised to see how if i can get a copy from someone who has one the same. Cheers

It depends if software is installed. This scanner comes with different software packages. I'm pretty sure they have it for Kia as well. But the best thing is to ask actual seller.

My previous comment asked about DPF. I did say that it can give you all necessary data about DPF state and condition how long till next DPF, the capacity, when was the last regen - and you are right, it can't do regeneration. The guy from that comment wanted to buy Passat, that's why I recommended him to get VCDS instead... But I wouldn't call it a scam - it does what it says on the box, it's a diagnostics tool, it diagnoses - gives you information. Company that makes it, also have more capable devices at higher price. All depends on your needs. By the way, how do you retract electronic parking brake? I know only 2 ways without software - apply 12 volts to the actual motor or take motor off and retract it manually, which is a bit of pain.. If it's not a secret, could you tell me please? :)

Great review. I have one of these and recently updated the sanner as per manufacturer instructions. Since the update i can no longer see live data from engine, transmission etc. Now I'm trying to find someone with the older version of the software on the sd card to downgrade. WheelsAndMotors I will have to wait until after September we are in lockdown with the virus until 13 September I am going to go to their Australian Centre to see if the fix it it is an error with the program it will do codes but it won’t do live data on the engine since the update and the don’t allow you to go back to previous version anymore

Sorry, I don't know much about software upgrades. I know it comes in different varieties with or without different car makers software. The price is very different. I was lucky to get this one for free with everything pre-installed. People that selling it, asked me to make a review and I can keep it.. This video was made some time ago. maybe there are some better scanners selling now. This one is pretty good. If you drive VAG (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda) - I think VCDS is pretty good. I bought one for myself.

I have got a Vauxhall corsa 2004 1.3 cdti and after 10 mins of driving the vehicle service light comes and stays on also if I carry on driving the turbo cuts out and the power drops when accelerating then comes back on to normal ive been told it could be egr valve but wondered if this diagnostic tool will work on my car what do you think?

Could be EGR, could be turbo problem. I didn't try it on Vauxhalls, but Vauxhall is in the list of cars it should work with. Please mind - this is diagnostics tool, it can read any error from any unit that has controller, but it can't reprogram ECU, remap or adopt a new unit.

Hi enjoyed the review as i use Vag Com myself , I have a 09 audi a6 with the later engine CAGB was wondering if you have come across oil pump problems on this engine I am experiencing no problems just asking for future reference.

vincent o'donnell I have 160K miles on my car (Sharan with CFFB engine). Not only it doesn't have any problems with oil pump, also it doesn't seem to consume any oil, so I don't have to top up, like I did with my previous car 2005 Audi A6 2.0tdi. 2005 and 2006 2.0tdi PD engines had bad oil pump design. Later they changed from chain-driven to gear-driven. But they didn't do any recalls. I had a problem with Audi and Bristol dealership straight after I bought that car, but it's a different story..

It uses different software for different car makes. I would say - it should. However, it's only a scanner - it can read errors, it can delete errors (that can come back if there is an issue). Basically it can point you where problem can be, but it doesn't fix a problem. There are some more complicated devices that can re-program stuff, but that's different league.

Hi! No, I haven't looked at it yet. It doesn't seem to be urgent, and I can't find time - currently working 7 days a week. Some time ago I had a bump in that corner where AdBlue tank is. First, I'm thinking to take the bumper off to see if there is any physical damage to electrical contacts, I'll make a video about bumper, and then I'll see where to go from that.

My friend, for scanning and deleting engine management fault codes (OBD) - you can go as low as 5-10 pounds. Also there are plenty of devices that are way cheaper than device in the video - all depends on your needs. In addition, I thought that one of the distinguishing features of this model compared to many handscan tools (and apps) is the fact it will read both generic AND manufacturer specific codes. Vag Com can do way more stuff than just scanning what's wrong. It can do re-programming and unit adoption. However VAG COM is designed to work only with VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group - VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Bentley). So, if you buying it to work on your car, and your car is VAG, or you planning on working only on VW, Audi, Skoda etc. - you should go for VAG COM. MaxiDiag covers almost every brand, but being a diagnostics tool it mainly serves the purpose to diagnose, to find what's wrong. Considering that it has EPB operation and service reset - currently for me it's enough. All depends on your needs.

Don't know, it also depends on what car you testing - it uses different software for different makes. It behaves differently when I plug it into Ford or VW. I think it's more like a scanner for errors. Even if it claims to go into every controller, it's still just a scanner. If you do have a problem with injector - it should tell you, but testing it - not sure if it can do it. Best thing is to ask people that sell it.

So, it does say on the box "Enhanced OBD II Mode 6". In the manual it shows this screenshot: On-Board Monitor Test 1. Test $01 Data 2. Test $03 Data 3. Test $10 Data 4. Test $21 Data 5. Test $22 Data 6. Test $25 Data It doesn't show $06, but that's just a picture from the book, as an example (or is it ;) ). So I went to my car (2 litre diesel VW Sharan). When I connected it didn't show all these $01 $03. Instead in words it lets me monitor - EGR, DPF, exhaust sensors 1 and 3, boost and NOx. This is all diesel related stuff, so I have no clue what it will show for petrol/gasoline Chevy.. Conclusion - after all this hassle - I don't know, sorry...

I've been watching them almost non stop just to learn a little about how car works not just driving them. I have another question for you. I just found some 4 fault readings in my car with the codes: P046C00 exaust gas recirculation sensor A circuit perfomance; P04300 exaust gas recirculation: these two reads passive/sporadic. Then I have a code reading 02214, ABS "tire pressure warning-lower limit not reached" not sure about what this is. The last code is 00469 information data bus in single wire open circuit. Any advice you can give an inexperience enthusiast like my self?

I'm not as professional as you might think - I only share what I've learned myself :) If an error passive sporadic, I normally just clear it and see if it comes back. It's always good to give a good clean to EGR system, it depends what car you got. My previous car - Audi A6 - EGR was easy accessible, my current car VW Sharan, even though I like it better from mechanical perspective - EGR is a nightmare to reach. Not sure about tyre pressure monitoring. Whenever I change tyres - it lights up, because pressure can be different to previous, so I just reset to new setting. Information data bus - is too electroniccy for me..

Ron Judd Sorry Ron, I haven't updated it yet, so I don't know. I don't think that update is necessary if you ise it for the same car, your car stays yhe same isn't it? :) I have another scanner Foxwell NT500 that works with VAG, I didn't update it for years and it stills works with no drama. I suppose if you are running garage and you want it to be compatible with newest cars and features, then you'll have to update it, but that woild be expected expense for such business. That's how I see it.

It's not only electronics that need to be checked before buying a car. Also spending 200 pounds just for one test? If you are going to use it, if you are going to do some mechanical work, and on different cars - then it would be worth to buy it. Otherwise, if you buying a car and you really want to check it - book overall test with independent garage. That's my opinion..

Sorry, Jon, been too busy (have to earn my living)... Just spent more than hour in my car with this scanner. I can say that instruction book that comes with it doesn't explain you everything - it just teaches you how to use it, but to understand what you looking for and how and where to use all the data - you have to be professional (which I'm not). I've found lots of data regarding DPF. DPF statistics - average soot, speed, max temperature, average temperature, torque time - all this was N/A, perhaps this is data that you get during regeneration. Then I've found values: - charge limit for field regeneration - 0.049lbs or 22.05g (had to change measurement units to metric at some point, so I have it in two values) - charge limit for service regeneration - 0.088lbs or 40g - charge limit for overcharge - 0.099lbs or 45g - charge pressure actuator activation shows 100% when engine is on and 10% when off Then I found different area that shows actual data for PArticle filter: - voltage sensor - difference pressure (value 13HPa) - dynamic offset (2Hpa) - it shows fuel consumption since last regeneration (didn't check that) - distance (I had 189044 meters, so that's 189km) - time since last regeneration (28.300 and counting in seconds) Then you get soot mass (so here you can see capacity till regeneration), so I had soot mass: - calculated - 0.031lbs or 14.1g - measured - 0.015lbs or 6.8g whatever the diffrence is between calculated and measured :-/ But, knowing limits above - you can see how much longer left till regeneration - particulate filter offset for diff.press... whatever that means.. - particulate filter oil ash volume - 0.17L Service regeneration current duration - 0.0s Simulated particle filter surface temp. - 222 degrees in Fahrenheit (I didn't return there since I've changed units to metric) Standardised airflow ratio - N/A (Don't know what at what condition it becomes available) + you get lots other volumes, that being not professional, I can only guess. I don't know which one of them would describe flow ratio, but I believe you can get the data, because apart from what I mentioned above - it seems to give temperature,pressure and other volumes from anywhere that can be read. If you understand more than I do ;) I could not find the option of activating regeneration manually, perhaps it doesn't have this option... or I didn't spend enough time :) So my conclusion - I believe it can give you all necessary data for DPF state and condition, same as any other units (I was delighted to find all data about AdBlue capacity, remaining miles, usage etc.), but I couldn't find the way to initiate DPF regeneration.. If you are looking to buy Passat - why don't you get VCDS? It's in about same price range, but it designed for VAG specifically and can do way more. I didn't try to update it yet, so can't tell sorry :( I didn't even register yet. I have similar scanner that works on VAGs only - Foxwell NT500. When I registered that one - they gave me 18 months of free updates, I updated that one and forgot it, so not sure what prices could be. You see, at the moment I don't have to deal with brand new cars, this Auxel is younger than my car anyway, so I'm not so keen on the updates yet.

ah my car is from 2002 so no need updates right? only for newer models?

That's my personal opinion. However, when you first time register it at their website and if they give you some limited time free update - it's always worth doing it. Sometimes updates are not only to bring new vehicles into the system, but also update actual software.

I'm not sure what 8021 is like, I have 8001 and it doesn't cover as much as Autel. Quick look at 8021 showed that it can do battery reset, which is useful for battery replacement for cars with start-stop technology, not sure if Autel does it.. Looks like I'm not good for advice :)) Make a good research before you buy..

My OBD autel md802 updated. My machine doesn't work, so I want to find firmware v.2.60 Sys.Software v5.02 Hardware version v1.00. Can someone help or advise me on what I should do? Or is anyone able to send a backup file for me?

Can you do video on checking charging system alternator etc

Simple. When engine running check voltage, 14 Volts - alternator charging, 12 doesn't charge. If at the moment while engine starts voltage drops below 10 - battery is not so good anymore.
