So no mention of the British or the Indians then? Or Richard O’Connor?

I think that a Bunch of good old Pakeha (White Guys from NZ) or on the rear occasion it might have involved the Infamous and Famous Maori 28th Battalion. Basically at the start of WW2 New Zealand was divided up into what our Aussie mates would call 3 States; keeping it short; the Top half of the North Island, then there was the Bottom half of the North Island and then there was the South Island! So the First Echelon of the NZEF was made up of the 18th Battalion (Top Half of the North Island), 19th bottom half of the N.I. and the 20th. Basically these three battalions got smashed in Side Rezegh in operation Crusader, And this is why the Famous Canterbury Rugby team is called the Crusaders. My dad got wounded, taken POW and Escaped, he went back to war again as a Tank Commander of an M4 Sherman Powered by the mighty Ford GAA V8 18 Litre muscle machine. He fought the Italians, the fascists Italians, the Germans, and the odd Nazi and then in a place called Trieste in 1945 when he though the war was finally over he fought the Commies; yes Tito's Commies wanted Trieste as war reparations and the Kiwi's said NO all the tanks loaded up and this time the Maori battalion was with them and a few tank shots later Tito and his commie C's decided they didn't want WW3! New Zealanders are ignorant about this; but in this battle we lost the most amount of troops in ant battle in World War 2. This battle was my fathers Gallipoli and yet everybody know about Gallipoli but how many know about operation Crusader The Maori Battalion (28th Battalion) were a distinct and deadly bunch! and luckily for the Germans and Italians I don't think the Famous or Infamous Maori Battalion was there, the Maoris didn't take Prisoners so to speak ! They were bad at that! My Dad came home to Oamaru, married my mum, played Rugby for North Otago and the Hannon Shield Combined Team, North Otago, South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury against Australia in 1946 or 47 and won 29-6.

The Māoris weren’t much chop in Crete eh? The NZ command in Crete was a complete disaster which gave Germany victory and caused the deaths of thousands of British and Australian troops.
