Using the yukon gold makes mashed potatoes out of this recipe. My granny always used red skin "new" potatoes which keep their shape well as long as you don't overcook them.
@inthekitchenwithlynn Жыл бұрын
You are so right!! When I decided to make this recipe the store was out of baby reds, so I substituted Yukon golds. Good reason to make this recipe again:) Lynn

Former Minnesotan here (born & raised)... I've been in Texas for 40 years now, though. I'm so glad I came across your recipe. My husband loves German potato salad!! I'm going to make this for our upcoming camping trip and share with everyone. Your video made me laugh 😂 and reminded me of those wonderful summer days with Aunts/Uncles, cousins, etc... gathering for a picnic and fishing at the lake. I'm going to make your Hawaiian salad too (with Spam!). 😊❤️ My sister makes a delicious Rouladen, handed down from my great grandmother. I look forward to watching your video on that as well. Blessings ~

Exactly how my grandmother made it except she thickened the dressing a bit with a little splash of cornstarch slurry. She'd make it in the morning when we were going to bbq so it wasn't hot when we ate it. German potato salad with grilled brats and metts was always a good day.
@inthekitchenwithlynn2 жыл бұрын
It certainly was!!
@dianat1260 Жыл бұрын
My mother skinned the potatoes and cut them in bite size pieces, then added cornstarch slurry to the bacon grease before adding the potatoes. other than this , the ingredients were the same. She always served it warm and it was delicious!
@inthekitchenwithlynn Жыл бұрын
I’m going to have to try the cornstarch slurry the next time I make this recipe:)

🤗OOOOHHHH MY...EXACTLY the only German potato salad (hot bacon potato salad per my stepmother) I will allow past my front door if you even make it that far😉...💁🏻♀️I double the pan portion and finish it with a flour/water slurry to thicken it(we like the sauce with a few potatoes in it🤣👍🏻)...we also like it the next day cold right out of the refrigerator 😁

Sounds delicious to me!! Anything with potatoes, bacon and a slurry is a win win in my book:)

Use white wine or cider vinegar...and a Hell of a lot less sugar! American tastes I know but I just checked an actual German recipe [in German ] and for a kilo of potato [3 cups is about 675gm] they use 1/2 the vinegar and just a "prise", a pinch, of sugar.
@charmainekirk15126 ай бұрын
You maybe could use a bit of chicken broth instead of water too! Good recipe!

I use my mother's recipe. Have you ever put celery seed in it? I love GPS.... have made it many times... thanks for the video. I use my ninja foodi to steam the potatoes, takes about 10 min and use apple cider vinegar.
@inthekitchenwithlynn Жыл бұрын
Sounds delicious! My hubby and I like celery seed in our potato salad but many people don’t, so if I’m bringing somewhere I usually leave it out. Thanks for your comment:) Have a great “end of summer” I myself am looking forward to Fall🍂🍁

How much bacon grease do you leave in the pan?
@inthekitchenwithlynn8 ай бұрын
2-4 tablespoons should do the trick:)

This looks delicious, but I've been to most parts of Germany several times except the extreme north and extreme east. and I never experienced warm potato salad with bacon. I suspect that this is authentic German-American potato salad. Still, it makes my mouth water.
@inthekitchenwithlynn Жыл бұрын
You are probably right on that. The recipe is from my Grandma, and she was well known for adding her own twist on recipes. I am going to change the name:) Thanks!

I can't stand ANYTHING with mayonnaise and find just the smell of it to be repulsive. I LOVE German potato salad (Kartoffelsalat) because it doesn't use it AND it's warm. Thanks for the video!

In Germany we slice the potatoes
@inthekitchenwithlynn Жыл бұрын
Yes, I’ve made it that way too, which is more traditional. My dad sliced the potatoes but my mom, like my hubby, prefers potato “chunks.” Happy Holidays, Lynn
@theresachiorazzi45712 жыл бұрын
My grandmas on both sides made this potato salad they were both German but ipersonally like traditional the kind with mayo. To each his own choice.
@inthekitchenwithlynn2 жыл бұрын
I be perfectly honest with you, I prefer the mayo based potato salad also:) Lynn
@dlm3189 ай бұрын
According to another German chef, north Germany use mayo based potatoes salad and the south vinegar based.
@inthekitchenwithlynn9 ай бұрын
@dlm318 Your correct! Northern Germany and Southern Germany make the same recipe but using different ingredients. In southern Germany, sauerbraten is served with gingersnap gravy (gingersnap cookies) but northern Germany does not;)

From reading some of the comments and having a recipe from my German aunt I can tell you this does not even come close to what they used to make in Germany years ago When I say years ago I am talking 100 yrs ago. What is done now who knows.
@inthekitchenwithlynn5 ай бұрын
Northern style German potato salad is made with mayo or creamy. Southern style German potato salad has a vinegar based dressing, I do believe. This recipe is one that my German grandmother made when I was young…there are so many different potato salad recipes and each family seems to have their own variety.

👋 The reason I kept messing around with the burner was it wasn’t working correctly. In fact, shortly after this video was made I had to through the burner out. I prefer now to only use my stove top burners. Thanks for stopping!

@@inthekitchenwithlynn I disagree with the original post. I like the aspect of feeling like I'm just sitting in the kitchen with a family member. Every bit of information to make it was still here and easy to follow. I also appreciate how you handled the negative comment as well as threw in a little view trap, lol. Great video and great personality. Keep going please.
