In conversation with award winning broadcaster and journalist, Tracey Matisak.
“America’s most compelling popular historian” (The Christian Science Monitor), Erik Larson is the bestselling author of eight critically acclaimed books, including The Splendid and the Vile, a chronicle of Winston Churchill and London during the Blitz; In the Garden of Beasts, the story of the first American ambassador to Nazi Germany; The Devil in the White City, a history of the serial killer who stalked attendees of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago; and Dead Wake, the tale of the 1915 sinking of the RMS Lusitania. A former features writer for The Wall Street Journal and a contributing writer for Time magazine, he has contributed articles to The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Harper’s, among other publications. In The Demon of Unrest, Larson delves into the five pivotal months preceding the Civil War to expose the controversies, crises, and personalities that led America into its bloodiest war.

This is the American dilemma that is sweeping the truth under the carpet!! As an historian of the Bible, I can appreciate the charge applied to those who know history and fail to tell it. It may not be popular but we must make it known, warts and all! Today little white children cry when confronted with the truth of how things really went down,MLK said it well,we are to be judged by the content of our character and not of our skin. Shame on America who had the Bible as a roadmap but chose to pick and choose what they would teach!! Should have put our arms around our enslaved people and shored them up instead of burning crosses and rapping and killing!!!

2 things that Larson should have mentioned; 1) A major reason Lincoln couldn’t allow secession was if he allowed the south to other states or territories would have done the same. 2) A major reason the South seceded was that the old compromise of one free and one slave state entering the union would end as would their control of the senate. They figured slavery would be outlawed before long.

Boy, I must say I enjoyed your podcast with Doug Brunt so much more than this one!!!! This one went sideways quickly, so I won’t be seeking it out anymore!! One would think with your background, you would be more willing to try to understand what is REALLY happening in our country right now, not just what is coming from the media. This interview made me quite sad!! I agree with your opinions about the Civil War, but your trying to draw parallels is WAY OFF!!!! #ErikLarson
