That super nanny clip made me cry. Adults like this don’t listen and observe what’s actually happening they just make up their own reasons.

Yeah, like the tiktoker said, probably half the children on super nanny were neurodiverse, but only some of them got diagnosed so super nanny knew how to work with those kids, but the neurodiverse ones who did not have a diagnosis just got treated like neurotypical kids and got punished for their neurodiverse behavior because parents and nanny thought it’s just bad behavior.

I just learned a thing about myself from the lady talking about the Supernanny thing. I, too, am super willing to try any food, it's exciting to try new things! However I was also considered a picky eater and would eat literally only ONE thing for MONTHS. Now, at 28, I know how to suck it up and just eat the things that feel yucky for social reasons because it's normal foods and I should like them cause everyone else does...FOOD SENSORY SENSITIVITY IS A THING??? WHY AM I ALWAYS LEARNING MORE ABOUT MYSELF FROM TICTOC THAN LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE????

When I saw that clip with the person talking about Supernanny, it actually inspired me a little. I am autistic myself and deal with these sensory issues, and honestly I just feel so bad for that poor kid because I know what he’s feeling. Psychology is one of my special interests so when I get older I want to become a psychologist, but now I also want to help kids with special needs too. It’s great to get help from someone who knows how you feel and actually understands you. A person doesn’t truly understand you if they haven’t got the disabilities themselves.

One time I went downstairs in my house and ended up melting down… the movie playing was loud, my dad who stressed me out at the time was staring at me, it was really cold, I was barefooted so I had dirt stuck to the bottom of my feet, and it was nighttime so I’d already been through a whole day of stimulation. Which all combined to send me into a terrible panic attack. My heart was loudly pounding rapidly, I couldn’t take deep breaths, only quick shallow ones, I couldn’t stand up properly, and my eyes started streaming with tears of confusion and fear because I had no idea of what was wrong with me I just curled up against the wall in the far corner of my room and waited it out. It was excruciating I was so exhausted after the fact and I still don’t have a clear answer as to what exactly caused it to begin with Sorry for the long paragraph, this is the first time I’ve ever told anyone else or even put my experiences into text Thank you for reading this internet friend

oh same! my mom says that ever since I was a toddler, if I got overwhelmed or just ran out of energy, I’d wander off to someplace dark and quiet. I remember it felt like shutting down and becoming numb to my surroundings. she called it being good at knowing when to take a break, I call it undiagnosed autism.

Seriously was an eye-opener for me. NEVER knew that was part and parcel of autism! I'm 47, dx'd around age 40, and still am learning. My partner has finally come to understand that the dx doesnt change ME, but helps me understand WHY I do/say/act/think differently. Not DX'd ADD, but I've noticed I have quite a bit of overlap with the ADD/ADHD symptoms, too... and my partner is currently waiting for an appointment (a year out, jeez, but it was non-emergency, so i get it lol) to get evaluated for ADD now, thanks to tiktok videos helping him see how different he is, as well. Granted, the tiktok vids come through youtube compilations like this one lol. Each day, we learn, and we're learning, we've found a lot of the subtle friction that was always there has eased a lot - he's learning to help me navigate a world that is way "too much" and I'm learning that I need to speak up more - and trying to learn skills to help him work with (instead of against) the ADD (or at least, the things we've seen). Ironically, with the food/nausea thing, we never figured it out. We did learn after a 5 month long bout of constant nausea, inability to eat cus of it, etc, that when it comes to being natious and not wanting to eat even though hungry, its better to eat ANYTHING instead of nothing. A piece of bread. A candy bar. Popcorn. Whatever your "goto" quick "food" is. Put something other than liquid in the tummy. If the nausea is super strong, this sounds odd... but a nurse taught me after they removed my gall bladder & it worked better than antinausea meds for me... sniff rubbing alcohol. Just a whiff! The nausea fog will clear enough to get food into you. Btw, this works for all nausea/v*m*ting. If its not from hunger, no need to eat right after. Other things good to settle tummies: ginger tea, candied/crystalized ginger (chew on it), soda crackers (saltines), oyster crackers (a tiny variety of soda cracker, great for morning sickness as its easier to carry around in baggies in pockets lol), and plain toast (no butter, jelly, etc). And i hush now. Sorry.... =/

1:08 Mise en place. Mise en place is why they give you your measurements first, and then begin the process of combining ingredients afterwards. Mise en place is French, it means, " gather/put in place." The idea is that you have all the tools and ingredients you need already measured and portioned out into separate containers, so that you can follow the recipe and just focus on combining them correctly. Part of it is for organization. Part of it is to make sure you have all of the parts required for the recipe. It's so you can prepare your supplies and then step into the procedure, rather than, "okay I need this much of that thing to go over here before this other thing happens but make sure I put it in the bowl with flour not the bowl with the sugar mix or else the whole thing is ruined." Myself being Autistic and ADHD I find mise en place to be really helpful to avoid the stress of cooking, not rushing around to get the next ingredient put in before something goes wrong because I didn't get it in soon enough. It's also not supposed to be done like, "I'm on this step, now scroll up and see how much of the ingredients I need to be able to do this step," and instead, you already have it out and available, so you just need to add it in. It creates the process and introduces routine into it. It's soothing. At least, to me.
@mscoot629

That’s exactly how I bake. First I measure all the ingredients and put them in separate containers/cups/bowls so I can then just follow the recipe and don’t have to worry about measuring anymore.
@SoularSlothesk
@SoularSlothesk 2 жыл бұрын
I think that is super useful, but it still sucks for ADHD peeps or tiny kitchens or implements where you gather as you bake. Maybe if we implemented the measurements also into the instructions in parentheses to help accommodate, it may prove more helpful. I tend to gather all the things on the counter, not measured out, then proceed to do the first steps measurements since I don't have a lot of space or attention.

Mise en place made all the difference for me, as well as lining them up in the order they're to go into the recipe. I still check the recipe a couple times as I go, but it's much less anxiety-inducing than it used to be.
@Lillyluvsanime
@Lillyluvsanime 2 жыл бұрын
@@SoularSlothesk I can understand with a small kitchen, but if you pre-measure and then put the ingredients into small containers it won't take up too much space. As for the ADHD, I did include that I'm ADHD as well. But maybe this is one of the cases with my ADHD and Autism where one will sort of overpower the other. I think the problem the person in the video was having was that she was going back and forth between her recipe steps and the ingredient measurements and probably becoming frantic, rather than just having all the ingredients prepared and set aside until she needed them. Because yes, that would be stressful going, "now I have to use this, but how much do I need? Go all the way back up to the top, okay I need this much of this ingredient and that much of that one. Now back to the steps, what do I do with them again." I absolutely understand how that can and would get overwhelming. And that's the point of mise en place, to take the whole thing step by step, starting with the ingredient measurements so you aren't going back and forth and working yourself up. Also, if you don't have enough counter space, you can put some of the pre-measured ingredients in the fridge, like your milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla and flour, if you aren't ready for it and it's in the way, stick it in the fridge and you have open counter space and those items being a little chilled won't have much, if any, effect on the consistency of your mixture, unlike with butter if it needs to be softened or melted.

(even though multiple small meals/snacks rather than few large meals is better for me and for weight loss). Sometimes I get super hungry, and my mom or someone else will say "eat something" and I'll say "why eat when I can wait like 30 minutes and become super nauseous and then not want to eat?" hunger life hack. ...that is probably slowly killing me.

Hello friend, if you're not familiar, may I introduce you to the term, "mise en place"? It's French and means "gather/put together," and is the vital step in food preparation in which you have your ingredients measured and portioned out, along with all the tools you need, at the ready as you go through the process of combining them for your recipe.

I used to use baking as my soothing method and when I found the recipe that I wanted for making/baking something I would rewrite the recipe out. I first wrote the ingredients and then the directions with the quantity of the ingredients needed for that particular step. That made my life easier for when I would scale up the recipe as I would deliver parcels of the baked goods to my bus driver, teachers, friends, office staff and my family. All of the people who were on my list loved the one thing I loved making- banana bread (nut free).

The eating thing, I have something I bit like that but most of it is brushed of by anyone except my mum and the select few friends i told. I hate the texture of most meats, most of the time. There are some days where I feel like I’m ok to eat chicken. There are beef pies my parents make every so often that has an ok texture for the beef where it’s practically falling apart and that I can handle. Meat usually tastes ok when I do eat it so it’s just about the texture. Another thing, cobs. The bread of them feels like it gets stuck in my throat uncomfortably, it’s not actually stuck, and I can do everything just fine when feeling like this, it just feels a bit like when my throat closes up when crying and that makes me want to cry. It also happens with some other starchy foods, like some chips/fries. (Chips are the chunky ones, fries the skinny ones)

adhd baking tip: most baking recipes follow the same structure. you mix your wet ingredients and then add the dry ingredients into that. sugar is a wet ingredient. if you like your baking to be a workout i recommend beating the living shit out of the butter and sugar for 5-10 minutes for extra air bubbles in the final thing but it’s not mandatory. this works for any basic cake and muffin i‘ve come across. this way i can just stay on the ingredients list and add the correct amounts. another tip: weigh the flour!! do not use cups as measuring devices for flour, they most likely don’t give you the correct amount of flour. unfortunately for icings, toppings and the like you will have to scroll down for instructions unless you find a foolproof formula to do them with or have certain things memorized by heart

Ok to the baking problem. Instructions are written like that for a good reason. The ingredient listing at the start, obviously so you have everything. But why not repeat it in the text? That is, because many people do what I would recomend you. Weigh and measure everything beforehand and set it in plain view. Now you can follow the recipy without interrupting measuring breaks. If the recipe has a measurement at an ingredient, this is now probably because you do not use all of that ingredient at that point. If the recipe had measurements at all steps I would have to double check at every point to make sure its really all of the ingredient. But what is with all the dishes you produce by doing this? Dishwasher, thats what the dishwasher is for.

Those sound like great compensation strategies for you. I actually do want to see it listed again even if I measured it, it triggers the association with doing it the first time and I remember measuring it and it being correct. If I forget actually measuring it, even if it’s sitting there measured out I will second guess if I actually did it right since I can’t remember doing it, I’ll look back at the top of the list and do it again. If I see it a second time, the number matches the number that is elsewhere, and that association triggers the memory so I know I did it right. Having a list and doing it isn’t enough for me, I don’t feel a “oh good that’s taken care of, no more thought needed it’s complete!”. I need to have a way to know I followed it the way I meant to, and even checkboxes just show I was there at some point and doesn’t allow me to actually recall doing so.
@HiltownJoe
@HiltownJoe 2 жыл бұрын
@@Xanderj89 when it comes to working through lists I have two strategies, If its something where I can see the result of the item (like things being in my shopping cart when I have grabbed something from the shopping list) I ususally go through the list multiple times and recheck until I have a run where I am confident that I checked every Item and reached the last item. Otherwise I use check lists or cross out items. In this case I force myself to trust that a thing crossed off the list is really done. If its not done, Oh well, can't win every time. Knowingly accepting the chance of failure in those situations has saved me so much grief, I only allow myself to recheck things a hurndret times for things that have really bad consequences, like submitting an important piece of work or leaving to a holiday and forgetting the passport: If the result is something harmless, like being too late ruining a cake or upsetting a friend, then its hail mary, there was a process, I followed it to the best of my abilities not gona invest the rest of my sanity for a cake. This obviously only works if your process is somewhat reliable. I once baked a cake for my birthday and forgot the baking powder. Obviously the cake did not rise and did not cook through. I then cut the cake in thin slices and made zwieback (cake rusk) from it. People were asking me for the recipe. I also tripplechecked for baking powder the next few years.
