My university has an organization where students can help socialize service dogs (which is absolutely amazing and it's great for acceptance and visability for people with disabilities). Students get assigned a puppy to take with them to classes throughout the day and teach them little things like how to press the door open buttons with their paws. I'm very tempted to join next year so that I can have a dog with me in classes to keep me grounded and relaxed (and to support the cause of course).

What you described about loud noises and bright lights, I have that too, and it really stops me from doing things. Therefore my mom has always go’s with me but because I am 18, that’s becoming a problem because she can’t always come with me anymore 😕 So to relief my mom and my self, I am getting a Cavalier King Charles spaniel to be my Autism assistants dog 🐶❤️💪🏼 and I love this video 👌🏼 thank you! My border collie is my BFF and he's pretty much an aspie like me. Loves dogs, not so fond of people, also super anxious. It would be great to have him by my side as an assistance dog that I can take with me places. Matilda is gorgeous.

Lara Schilling My pup is a border collie too. They're so brilliant! I trained her to lean on me if she feels that I'm getting too anxious, so now she's legally a service dog and I can take her with me anywhere as long as she's wearing her service vest! Of course, I also did a lot of training about how to behave in public.

Anxious dogs aren't good for service work (unless they are at-home only), it's really unfair to the dog and more likely to result in a dog bite
@Madlemore
@Madlemore 4 жыл бұрын
Maggie Smith THATS Not necessarily true. Dogs who are “anxious” can be trained to focas solely on their owners, and their hyper sensitivity to their surroundings can be honed in amazingly as a service animal. Please remember that every border collie is different. Yes, border collies as a breed are sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements, but the fear can be redirected as concern. Border collies excel at dog sports in crowded arenas with thousands of screams and clapping and cameras flashing because of their training. Hope this helps :)

Is your dog really cute or outgoing that people are especially attracted to come over to see or pet it? Maybe get a vest for the dog to wear. They have badges that instruct people to not touch the dog and things like that. I know that people go crazy when they see me w a baby goat and i hate the attention. I just have lines that i say when people come up to me. Its an orphan baby has to eat every two hours so thats why im hauling it around in public. Pretend that you are training the dog for agility or something. If people come up to you then tell them the dog needs no distractions so it can learn. I did this myself. Also there are lots of places to go and avoid seeing people. There are times of day when most of society is at work or school. Or early in the morning you only have to see a few birdwatchers. Make it work. It is so worth it.

Thank you very much for the great video but you should mention that a companion dog us not a service dog just to avoid the confusion that some people who don't know the difference or why they are different. Anyways please consider adding to this video or making a new video to distinguish between the two types companion dog and service dog. Thank you very much :-)

I disagree, these type of dogs are not companion / emotional support animals to us, they provide a very clear service of being able to ground us and provide structure and act as a surrogate in-lieu of human friends. For instance, my dog forces me onto a fairly rigid schedule due to having to walk and feed her, the service she is providing to me is structure which helps to stabilize and ground me. A typical person with an ESA dog also doesn't rely on their animal for social interaction to the extent that we do, my dog really does act as a surrogate, and in fact it is entirely because of her that I'm forced to socialize and make real friends at the dog park, so again she is forcing me into more neurotypical patterns. The scheduling cues that she provides me also helps me stay compliant with medications. So to me these are very clearly "services" that she is providing to me, there is no legal requirement that a service animal has to physically preform some action for it to be considered a service animal. Having a dependent to take care of can be very transformative for some people with ASD because it forces them to do things they wouldn't normally do if left to their own devices.

@@PixelPi Actually there is criteria for a dog to fit into the roll of an actual service dog. The definition of a service animal is that they are a trained animal (dog or miniature horse) that performs tasks to assist their disabled handler. The dog just being there is not enough, it may help you but dogs naturally socialize with others and are close to their families. You don't train them to do these things so that makes them an ESA. Which is totally okay! But an ESA doesn't have the same access rights as a service animals. We put in over 300+ hours of training to get our dogs ready for the outside world and to assist us. Grounding just by them being there is not a true task, a way to turn that into a task is by it being DPT (Deep pressure therapy) which again is not enough Hope this helps
@PixelPi
@PixelPi 4 жыл бұрын
@@lightsaflame4505 My service dog is trained to do specific tasks, I've spent well in excess of 1000 hours of training into her... she could easily pass the AKC Urban CGC test. Just because I personally trained her to do specifically what I need from her doesn't mean she isn't a service dog. My doctor literally wrote me a prescription for a service dog, and just because you can't understand the tasks my service dog has been trained for doesn't make her any less legitimate then an agency provided service animal. I've owned over ten dogs throughout my lifetime. I know how to train them myself, it's essentially just operant conditioning, and so my service dog has been custom tailored for my needs and my needs alone. I may have made it sound like her just being there was enough, as in an ESA capacity, but she is working for me all the time... which is to say she doesn't need external prompting from me to do her tasks, in fact, one of her tasks actually is to externally prompt me to do things... so she is always on the job.
@lightsaflame4505

@@PixelPi I never said owner trained service dogs were illegitimate 😕 . By law a service dog performs tasks for their handler to function. So if that's what your dog does that's great but like you said you made it sound like an ESA rather than a service dog. Service dogs can be at home only as well so it's good to differentiate. Because uneducated people may bring untrained pets into public thinking it's okay

I need to see an allergy doctor because when i was young, i was allergic to everything, dog, cat, rabbit............. I hope now i'm not anymore, i would love sooo much having a dog to help me face loneliness, having a friend. But even if i'm not allergic i will never adopt a dog if i don't have financial stability for at least 10 years, ending in the street, having to give the dog to someone.. that'll broke my heart and even more important : the dog heart :'(

Is she still a legally recognised and protected service dog if she isn’t trained to complete tasks?
@Aroacerat
@Aroacerat 8 ай бұрын
If not trained to do tasks, they may be licensed as an ESA (emotional support animal) if you get a doctor’s note, and an animal would not have to be trained to get this title. They would not be allowed into businesses and such, but if you were to, say, get a divorce, it couldn’t be given to the other person as it is yours and yours alone.

Hi Chloe, we got a Labradoodle for my 9yr old aspie princess and we have had her professional trained, and even though she is still a puppy at 18 months old we would consider training her as an assistance dog. Is your dog trained as an assistance dog(so u can take him/her into shops and schools etc?). And if so what was the process? Cheers Nathan. (PS: We are in Ballarat and would love for you to come and do like maybe a singing/dancing session with our Ballarat Yellow Lady bugs)
