What happens when the haircut tips and tricks don't work? Speed and simplicity are your friends. No fancy haircuts, just make them as comfortable as you can and get it done. Eventually things get better. Don't give up hope.

I'm a barber by trade and what I like to do with these little dudes and kids in general that don't like the sound or feeling is let them hold the clipper . I let them turn it on and off . I also get them to comb there hair first for me and play with the combs . This let's them know they are safe, they know it's not going to hurt them and just get comfortable with the environment. A good one is when I spray them down with my spray bottle I always say " dude I got a water gun with your name on it " Holding patience is key to every haircut... Including grown ups.

as an autistic person, i remember when i was younger i hated haircuts and would have meltdowns, and one hairstylist was so mad about it that she slapped my writer and screamed at me. we were later given a full refund, but a lot of kids with autism don’t get treated with kindness at the hairstylist. god bless you guys for trying to understand them and treating them with kindness and care as you guys cut your child’s hair

As someone with autism I don't like to get haircuts because the clippers hurt so my mom when I was younger she got these clippers that didn't vibrate as hard anymore and and they weren't that sharp either my haircuts now aren't like normal edge up now but I really like the clippers

Same thing here, I’m 14 with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD. When I was around 4, having my hair cut was like murder. The noise of the clippers really scared me, and the feeling of people grabbing my hair and cutting it would really make me feel queasy. I’ve also had to switch barbers like…4 or 5 times now (the first time was because the Barbershop I went to traumatised me when I walked passed it, and the others was because of style). Also, love your profile picture, I’m a trainspotter as well (I recently went to go see the Tangmere at Crewe which is my local station for Trainspotting).

A good way to keep the kids calm is to put the largest guard on the clippers and let the kids feel the vibration s so that way they know that you mean no harm to them with the clippers. It brings comfort and security to the kids. You guys are doing a great job so far ☺

I find counting down in increments say from 20 to 0 giving them a 10 second break and then continuing helps, it means they can process that they will get a little break now and again, my son won’t sit though so have to chase him around the room, seems to be worse at the start. You so right. Sometimes its just a matter of Get er done! Despite so many differences on the Spectrum Joey was exactly the same towards haircuts. The barber would let us bring him after he had closed, and several of us had to hold him down, despite him being so young. Luckily, he got over it and now loves to go get his hair cut. It's all about the attention nowadays. So I know brighter and easier haircuts are to come to you guys in the future.

What helps us is giving him sensory calming before hand. Massage, joint compression, squeezes, then explaining what isgoing to happen. Then during I allow him to hold tablet. Giving sensory input first makes a huge difference. It helps desensitize him.

Thank you so much for sharing this video! My 4 (almost 5) year old son has autism and haircuts are always a nightmare for him! I bought the same clippers you used in this video and gave him his first at home haircut today! I’m glad the guards are color coded because it made it so much easier to follow along with how you did it! His hair looks great! It was a lot less stressful for him (and me lol) and it actually looks better than when the barber does it because he wasn’t fighting as bad! Plus the clippers cost as much as what I would pay for 1 haircut, so you can’t beat that!

We were very fortunate to find a hair cuttery that had the patience and dexterity ( and fun chairs and cartoons on a tv) to handle Dan and distract him. The first couple occasions were shakey , up and down in the chair and quite a bit of shrieks at age 4-5. He has completely overcome that now at 10 and 11--but he also got into a tricotmilia phase (spelling incorrect, aka "hair pulling")...that changed things to a buzz cut. But he is getting better.

I have the hair pulling disorder and I’m dreading the day of the hair cut. The simple fact of the threats of the shaved. The buzzer and I’m going to have a heart attack. Trying to decide on the hair cut it would be evened out but that would also mean the look of what it did when i stop pulling. Bottom line is I don’t want the failure of it not worthwhile.

I recently discovered that i have autism and this was literally me when I had to get my hair cut. I got used to it but i used to scream so much and say that they were trying to kill me in order to get someone to come and save me from the haircut. Every hairdresser on the neighborhood knew me so they refused to give me a haircut. It eventually gets better, but i remember that the worse was to get hair on my face and the machine jerking the hair instead of cutting it. Unfortunately, i can't give you any better advice

Hello Autism Family. Although my son is not autistic, he has a shows similar issues like your son with haircuts. He never liked it but we use to get through haircuts. Within the last year... it’s been terrible. We’ve left with half done haircuts because I can’t hold him down. Ive cried home because I can’t get his haircuts finished. I was searching online for new tricks when the lollipops, tablets, toys, tv all have failed and I ran into your video. It gave me hope and encouragement that I could do his hair. And it didn’t need to be picture perfect, just enough to clean him up and make him presentable. And it worked! Thank you for posting this video for all parents who need the help. And who need to know they are not alone. God bless.

My son with autism is almost 14 now. He is able to finally handle haircuts. It took him til he was 10 to be able to handle it without completely either melting down or being completely soaked in sweat. He has never been able to handl having hair anywhere near his skin, so the minute it got too long, we had to shave his head, or else he'd cut his bangs off himself.

I have high respect and love for kids with autism and the mothers and fathers that have to constantly help them. I never judge people and man I'm not even going to lie that does really look hard and stressful but hang in there man it will all pay off soon. An when i found out that i had autism i have been supporting kids and adults that have autism ever since. But i am just happy that mine isn't as server. This is our struggle, one thing that helped us alot besides the ipad snacks and reward was having a soft brush with baby powder, soon as you clipp down the hair u clean it off quickly making it a game along with alot of praising for their good job, i found it wasnt the clippers sound that bugged my son but the ichy hair feeling♥️

I remember that haircuts used to hurt like hell until I was like 5 or 6. The end of the guard hurt, which I found out 30 years later is due to a slight allergy to stainless steel. Also, 55 years ago, clippers usually weren’t kept as sharp as they are today, so the clippers were pulling my hair many times/second, which really hurt. The hair getting into my mouth was also a problem, but I didn’t have stim, I just cried. I wish doctors knew how to diagnose this 55 years ago, as it might have made things better.

My son is 14 and still has meltdowns over hair cuts. Have you tried the baby clippers that is supposed to be quiet? Your boys are so cute.

I found a hair clipper brand called Surker K9S on Amazon. It's has a really quiet motor compared to most clippers. The vibration is low as well. It worked out well for my son. I know everyone is different. With said clippers being cordless. It also reduces risk of damage to a cord Incase of a fit. Definitely get a barber brush with talc powder to remove the hair from the face, neck, and ears. Using a cape was hard at first. But I let my son play with the one I bought so he could be used to it.

That's so funny, because as a "normal" kid, I didn't like haircuts either, and it was mostly because of the tiny hairs that would go down my shirt and "scratch" my neck and make my back itch! LOL

I can only imagine what those boys feel like. For us yea. The clippers are no big deal. For that kind of situation though not only little but awetistic I wonder what they thing of the clippers. Because their brain works so different. I hope that this inspires you when I tell you this but I am totally blind and I do use the clippers on my own head. I have about 4 clippers. I am not a barber of course but i am a working pianist. I have been cutting my own hair for the last 17 years. I decided well, if I can shave with both types of razors manual and electric I can sure use the clippers on my own head. It is really fun to do. I love to hear the clippers snatching away the hair. It feels like success. And not to mention, I am saving money and i don’t have to tell the barber like in my child hood years what kind of hair cut i wanted. A hair cut and a shave would easily cost quite a bit of money. So many people who are sighted are so scared to use the clippers on their own head, but for me I took the plunge 17 years ago and decided to hack away at it, and you really don’t have to see to do your own hair. It takes feeling and it is common sense. It is just like shaving but a bit different. Depending on the length of guard you have on the clippers the clippers are not going to take any more off than what you specify. So really it is easy to use the clippers on your own head if you can’t see. Plus you will hear if the clippers are cutting or if they are not. The guard will stop the clipper at the specified length.

My 5 year old is on the spectrum. He loves playing in bath tub. But when he sees his father bring in the clippers before going into bath tub he just can't stop shouting, moving, shaking and i could literally see the veins in his neck because of all that muscle tightening and anxiety and the force with which he screams. So i have to hold his arms and hold his legs in my legs to calm him down and make him stand still just to get that trim....n i can bet he gets the strength of an adult when stressed out so much so that even i can't hold him...

When I was his age I didn't like haircuts, but I got use to it when I got older, I think the time to getting use to it depends on the autism level.

Look at em....look at those handsome boys. James does pretty well getting his haircut but he does move a lot but that’s more when he has been sitting for a while. I do always give him something to hold and I put a movie on his kindle fire.
